Dr. Laura welcomes Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and world renowned expert in ADHD, Dr. John Ratey, to the show. Dr. Ratey has written twelve books including “Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain,” which inspires much of Dr. Laura’s conversation with him. Dr. Ratey shares his experiences and research into the power of exercise on the brain and how it can reduce stress.
The ability of exercise to combat stress and increase focus, including in those diagnosed with ADHD, is a powerful thing. Dr. Ratey refers to physical education in schools and how changing the traditional program benefits the mental wellbeing of students. Dr. Laura and Dr. Ratey discuss the increased levels of anxiety, stress, and depression in the world, the positive brain chemistry exercise produces, and the benefits of community on wellness. The knowledge shared in conversation and in Dr. Ratey’s books is inspirational and potentially life changing.
“Let's talk about workplace. I mean, it has been a big bonus to include exercise opportunities in the workday, whether that means extended breaks or membership in the gyms or having some … yoga instructors in a couple afternoons a week during their lunch period, stuff like that to encourage wellness on the job.” Dr. John J Ratey
About Dr. John J. Ratey:
John J. Ratey, MD, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and an internationally recognized expert in Neuropsychiatry. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles, and 12 books published in 20 languages, including the groundbreaking ADD-ADHD “Driven to Distraction” series with Ned Hallowell, MD. Their latest release, ADHD 2.0 (2021) explores new science and strategies. With the publication of his bestseller, "Spark-The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain," Dr. Ratey established himself as one of the world's foremost authorities on the brain-fitness connection in areas such as ADHD, Autism, Aging and Cognition.
Dr. Ratey’s work in Attention Deficit Disorder came after he and his former student, Ned Hallowell, recognized and diagnosed their own ADD, prompting them to write a book to raise awareness and an understanding of the diagnosis to a lay audience. Published in 1994, “Driven to Distraction” became a bestseller, with over 2 million copies in print, and is still considered one of the Bibles of ADD today. Dr. Ratey and Dr. Hallowell went on to write “Delivered to Distraction” and “Answers to Distraction”, and have become recognized around the world as authorities on the subject. They continue to collaborate and recently released ADHD 2.0, exploring new science and strategies.

Dr. Laura shares insights from her pioneering research around the future of work in this episode. The research topic for her doctorate was on leading dispersed teams, and she also researched telework adoption in the days before Zoom became ubiquitous. Drawing from that experience and the realities of working today, Dr. Laura talks about themes she’s observing and the idea of workplace flexibility. She explains the significant benefits and unique challenges of flexible work locations.
Working humans are diverse in their personalities and preferences; there will always be situations that work better for some people and don’t work for others. For example, we are all on a scale of how much we tend to procrastinate - from quick starters to those who struggle to begin a project or task - recognizing these differences and implementing tools to assist in overcoming them is part of what needs to be considered in remote work. Dr. Laura discusses how, in her field of organizational psychology, she has studied what factors or traits and skills give someone the ability to be an effective remote leader. She explores the support structure that hybrid work requires and how to move past the rigid office structure of the past.
“... a few things are for sure in my mind. One is that flexibility is a top motivator for a large number of humans … I think having had a taste of greater flexibility, to take that away is like taking away a gift. It's like saying: here's the gift, unwrap it. You like it? Okay, well, you liked it, but I'm going to retract that gift. What's going to happen is people are going to shop around for places where they can get that gift of flexibility back.” Dr. Laura

Dr. Laura welcomes sociologist, author, and thought leader Tracy Brower to the show to talk about happiness and work, and why those two ideas aren’t mutually exclusive. There is an incredible amount of research on happiness, as Tracy discovered when writing her latest book, The Secrets to Happiness at Work. She shares why she was compelled to write it and some of what she learned along the way.
Tracy acknowledges that a lot of times we hear that “happiness is fluffy.” On the contrary, she has found that happiness, and joy, are the drivers of physical and mental health, cognitive capability, and business benefits. She and Dr. Laura explore the ways in which work and life spill over into each other and how happiness in either one will tend to increase happiness in the other. Community, common goals, and our relationship to work are all places where happiness can be cultivated. Tracy’s insights on joy in work are more relevant than ever in our post-pandemic society.
“The other thing we can do in terms of creating the conditions for happiness at work is looking for opportunities to grow, to learn, to stretch. When we're doing things that challenge us, it's extraordinarily correlated with happiness.” Tracy Brower
About Dr. Tracy Brower, PhD, MM, MCRW:
Dr. Tracy Brower is a PhD sociologist studying work-life fulfillment and happiness. She is the author of a new book, The Secrets to Happiness at Work as well as her previous book, Bring Work to Life. She is the Vice President of Workplace Insight for Steelcase and a contributor to Forbes.com and Fast Company. Tracy’s work has been translated into 17 languages and she is an award-winning speaker with over 25 years of experience working with global clients to achieve business results.
Tracy is on the board of the United Way of Greater Ottawa County and on the executive council of the Design Museum Everywhere. In addition, she is an executive advisor to Like|Minded, Coda Societies and to the MSU Master Industrial Mathematics Program. Tracy’s work has been featured in TEDx, The Wall Street Journal, Work-Life Balance in the 21st Century (book), Globe and Mail (Canada), InsideHR (Australia), HR Director (UK), T3N (Germany), Real Estate Review Journal, Fortune.com, Inc. Dr. Laura hosts a special episode to highlight The LiLoHia Project. She’s joined by Gerald Auger and Sass Jordan, co-collaborators on The LiLoHia Project, for a conversation on exactly what the project is about, what it aims to do, and who can get involved. LiLoHia - light, love, and gratitude - is about spirituality and the rise of human consciousness, and includes episodes, concerts and healing events curated by Gerald and Sass, centered around the solstice dates (March 21, June 21, September 21, December 21).
Sass Jordan explains LiLoHia was created because there is such a demand by people to understand what’s happening in the world, to sort out underlying confusion and connect to oneself. Gerald Auger says “We’re just fulfilling our commitment that we made to our higher power to help our fellow human beings”. Dr. Laura and her guests discuss the journey Gerald and Sass are on, the different paths people find themselves on when seeking spirituality, and what spirituality is and can be. The conversation sheds light on how all these insights weave into The LiLoHia Project.
“... because we have the opportunity to have public platforms, we're just sharing our journey with anyone who's interested ... I think it's a collective growth that we're all going through. And, you know, when you can lean on each other, someone else has a question and maybe you have an answer… but beyond anything that you say, it's [that] you got to walk your talk.” - Sass Jordan
About Gerald Auger:
Gerald Auger is an actor, producer, writer, entrepreneur and motivational speaker from Alberta, Canada, of Woodland Cree descent. He graduated from Grande Prairie Regional College in 1995 with a Marketing Management diploma and a Small Business Management certificate. In 1996 and 1997 Auger was awarded the National Native Role Model by the Governor General of Canada and spent the next two years visiting more than 30 communities across Canada, inspiring his aboriginal peers, relating stories about his experiences and bonding with locals through cultural events and ceremonies. After being spotted at the opening ceremonies of the 1995 Canada Winter Games, Auger was given a supporting role in the 1998 film Il mio West (later dubbed Gunslinger’s Revenge), also starring David Bowie and Harvey Keitel. Filmed in Italy for Pacific Pictures, it was the first spaghetti western to use First Nations actors in aboriginal roles.
In 1999 Auger became the first aboriginal recipient of the Rotary International Integrity Award for the Avenue of Nations in Alberta. Auger had a lead role in the 2002 National Geographic IMAX-production Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West, and the next year he played Crow Hunter in an episode of the four-part Hallmark Entertainment TV miniseries Dreamkeeper.
In addition to being in the opening and closing ceremonies for the Arctic Winter Games as Anook the Rockman for The Heroes Journey in 2010, Auger had a role in the cult classic FUBAR 2 and played a Native guide and interpreter in Western Confidential (starring FUBAR’s Paul Spence) as well as a Native policeman in The Plateau.
Auger produced, wrote and directed the 2007 short film Walking Alone about the life of rapper Shawn Bernard, and the 2008 National Film Board of Canada documentary Honour Thy Father that tells the story of his conflict with the Anglican Church (which refused his late father to have a traditional native funeral), and won Best Film Representing Cultural Diversity at the Alberta Motion Picture Industry Awards in 2009.
As owner and Chief Executing Officer of the business Black Eagle Entertainment, Auger plans to produce films, television series and documentaries aiming to advance the status and expose the stereotyping of his people. Auger is currently (spring 2013) working on his latest film project The Forgotten Truth of the Wilderness where he explores the idea that the Son of God was one of the greatest Sundancer’s that ever lived for he was one of the first men to give his flesh to a tree.
About Sass Jordan:
The roots that grew Canada’s Queen of Rock, Sass Jordan, started in Europe and edged across the pond to the veins of metal pulsing in the musical metallurgy of Montreal in the 70’s. Montreal’s burgeoning ’70’s scene included a ‘no holds barred’ approach to glam, punk, blues, prog, metal, country, jazz, folk, with the added attraction of a homegrown sound created by the Quebecois artists of the decade, unique to the landscape and pertinent to the denizens of the period. There was no better musical place to be in the ’70’s- and this was the backdrop that nurtured one of the pioneers of female fronted rock – Sass Jordan.
In the years since these auspicious beginnings, Sass has found herself working with and in the company of many of the people that inspired her to do what she does, amongst them the incomparable Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Steve Miller Band, Van Halen, The Foo Fighters, Cheap Trick, Santana, Joe Cocker, Styx, Rodger Hodgson, April Wine, Jeff Healy, and countless others. She has won various awards, including Juno and Billboard, and has sold over a million records world wide.
Sass was a feature actor in the episodic tv show “Sisters”, and from 2003 to 2008 starred as one of the four judges on the hugely popular television series, Canadian Idol. Her songs and performances have been featured on numerous television shows, including the iconic 90’s ‘Baywatch’ and ‘Knight Rider’, The Dennis Miller Show, and SyFy’s ‘Defiance’.
There are very few female singers out there that are used as an example to describe a sound/style, but Sass is one of them.

Dr. Laura welcomes author David Allen back to the show to share more insights from his book, Getting Things Done, and on his GTD methodology. They discuss how GTD helps people make space in their lives for being present. David offers insights gained from his spiritual coach that dovetail with the ideas in his book around freeing up mental space.
David gives Dr. Laura real life examples of some ways in which his Getting Things Done methodology has tangibly changed peoples’ lives for the better. When you make room for your mind amongst the distractions of the material world, you find that inner spiritual world that alights your creativity and positivity. David and Dr. Laura talk about journaling for creative expression and ultimately a focus on what really matters in life.
“But again, part of our methodology is … it's not all cake and cupcakes. You move into challenges. It's like, okay, now that I've got a challenge, something in my intention, what's my desired outcome? So training myself to think about outcome and action. As opposed to being the victim. And that's a lot of what my methodology is about, it's a thought process. How do you train yourself to think there are no problems, there are only projects.” - David Allen
About David Allen:
YOUR MIND IS FOR HAVING IDEAS, NOT HOLDING THEM.® That’s why David Allen created Getting Things Done®. GTD is the work-life management system that has helped countless individuals and organizations bring order to chaos. GTD enables greater performance, capacity, and innovation. It alleviates the feeling of overwhelm—instilling focus, clarity, and confidence.
After decades of in-the-field research and practice of his productivity methods, David wrote the international best-seller Getting Things Done. Published in over 28 languages, TIME magazine heralded it as “the defining self-help business book of its time.” In 2015, he released a new edition of the book, with new insights, updates, and discoveries about the GTD methodology and its many personal and professional applications.
Today, David Allen is considered the leading authority in the fields of organizational and personal productivity. The David Allen Company, run by David and his wife Kathryn, oversees the certification academy and quality standards for Global Partners offering Getting Things Done courses and coaching around the world.

Dr. Laura welcomes one of the world’s leading experts on productivity, author David Allen, to the show to talk about his book, Getting Things Done. David shares why the book, first written in 2001 with a second edition in 2015, remains relevant and why the processes are useful in any situation.
Getting Things Done, or GTD, outlines the five steps that David uncovered for taking control of situations in your life. Dr. Laura and David discuss how the process of externalizing and clarifying commitments is part of the journey required to manage stress. It’s the feeling of overwhelm in both personal and professional lives that GTD offers the tools to tackle. David Allen offers his personal reasons for writing the book, or manual as he refers to it, and why he believes that balance in life overall is key to wellness.
“So my whole methodology was about getting appropriate engagement with your life. It wasn't about working harder or being busier. Getting Things Done is not really about getting things done, it's about clarifying the things that you have some investment in making happen and then being appropriately engaged with them.” - David Allen

Dr. Laura welcomes her first guest of 2023, author and Chief Medical Director of Employee Health and Wellbeing at Johns Hopkins Medicine, Dr. Richard Safeer to the show. Dr. Safeer just released his first book, “A Cure for the Common Company” and he talks about his book and the benefits of workplace wellbeing with Dr. Laura.
Richard Safeer wrote his book because he sees that what companies are doing may not be as effective as they thought. He believes there is a better way to use company time, energy, and resources to effect a greater culture of wellbeing. He explains the six building blocks of wellbeing, where the title of his book came from, and how employers are instrumental in the health of their employees in this inspiring conversation with Dr. Laura.
“So, you know, one of the most common challenges I see workplaces have is that the employer takes this individual approach. Here are the resources, go ahead and use them and get better. As opposed to recognizing that we're all in this together, that our well being is a team sport and that we rely on each other to improve and maintain our health and well-being” - Richard Safeer
About Dr. Richard Safeer:
Dr. Safeer is Chief Medical Director of Employee Health and Wellbeing at Johns Hopkins Medicine. Dr. Safeer completed his B.S. in Nutrition at Cornell University before graduating from medical school at the S.U.N.Y. at Buffalo (magna cum laude). He was the Medical Director of an Occupational Health Center in Baltimore and Wellness Director for the Mid-Atlantic region of the parent company, just before starting at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield as the Medical Director of Preventive Medicine. He has been credited by some for bringing ‘wellness’ to the realm of the managed care industry. He also led CareFirst BCBS to be among the first cohort of health plans to be accredited for Wellness by NCQA. He holds an adjunct faculty appointment at the American University, where he taught “Organizational Health”.
Amongst his responsibilities at Hopkins, includes leading the employee health and well-being initiative, Healthy at Hopkins. “So something to remember is that people crave the A’s, and I find that the A's are easy to remember. They crave attention. So what they’re doing is being noticed and seen, and what they do matters. … People also crave appreciation. So being appreciated for a job well done, and that praise and that thank you goes a long way. … And then the other is acceptance. And in this age of equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging, all [are] very important.” - Dr. Laura

Detective Dave Sweet, author of “Skeletons in My Closet”, joins Dr. Laura once more to talk about choosing positivity over cynicism when faced with the world’s troubles. Dave details his work with charitable organizations that seek to put silver linings in tragedy.
Dr. Laura revisits the tragedy surrounding her nieces that first drew her and Dave together, and they share a story about connectedness, some might call an affirmation, involving a painting. The messages that Dave shares through his charity work and book are about awareness and empowerment. As a homicide detective, he sees some of the worst tragedies that can befall people, but he chooses positivity and actions that make a difference.
“I wanted to be part of an organization that was supporting and empowering women not to go back to their abuser. Gems [for Gems] spoke to me on that level. I was introduced to the organization through a family that I had already been supporting who had lost a daughter to intimate partner violence. And once I started to learn more about intimate partner violence, I really came to learn that 85% of the time the abuser is a man. And so if men are going to be the biggest part of the problem, then we have to also be part of the solution. I mean, it just makes sense.” - Dave Sweet
About Detective Dave Sweet:
With over 24 years of policing experience, Detective Dave Sweet has been involved in some of Canada’s most infamous and famous cases.
