Dr. Laura continues her exploration into the subject of narcissism with her guest, eminent scholar and professor at Old Dominion University in Virginia, USA, Dr. Nina W. Brown. Nina is the author of over forty books, ten of which are on the subject of narcissism. Nina shares valuable insight from her own experiences and her extensive research into both psychology and narcissism.
A personal experience with a difficult to deal with department chair was what initially sent Nina Brown into researching narcissism. She discovered that everyone on the faculty was feeling the same way as she was, devalued and frustrated by interactions with this person, so she set out to learn why. That led her deep into narcissism study and ten books on the subject. Dr. Brown acutely understands exactly why narcissistic individuals have such a toxic impact on the workplace. She explains why it can be difficult to initially spot the narcissist and what kind of coping strategies can be created once their behavior is revealed.
“[Narcissism] can impact [cultures] by being and making the workplace toxic. It can impact individuals, and then it extends out to the whole group. And what it does, is it makes the workplace less effective. And it makes the workers less effective because they don't feel appreciated. They don't feel heard and understood. And they feel that perhaps they're being undercut in some way.” - Nina W. Brown

Wendy Behary, founder and director of The Schema Institutes of NJ/NYC/DC and author of the best-selling “Disarming the Narcissist” (available in 14 languages), joins Dr. Laura once more to dig deeper into how narcissists show up at work and in home life. She explains the emotional impact of the narcissistic individual on those around them.
Wendy Behary details the way in which overt and covert narcissists work to exert control over people and also how intimidating, overwhelming, and anxiety-producing they can become. She and Dr. Laura explore how gaslighting, or distorting reality, is used by the narcissist to instill doubt in others. Wendy has keen insight into how to cope with narcissists in your workplace or home, how to regain a sense of self, and also when and how to confront them in order to find your voice. Wendy encourages learning how to regain calm within yourself, not just for dealing with narcissists but so you can pursue personal wellness.
“The narcissist is attracted to self-sacrificers. And so often the empath and the self sacrificer are one and the same. So when we think about someone who is highly self sacrificing, typically what motivates that is two things: guilt and empathy. So if you've got a super amount of empathy and you also carry guilt, which may have been laid down through modeling in your own early life, then chances are you're willing to sacrifice your own needs, even your own identity, in order to please another. Narcissist: yay, happy day, right?” - Wendy Behary

Dr. Laura welcomes Wendy Behary, founder and director of The Schema Institutes of NJ/NYC/DC and author of the best-selling book “Disarming the Narcissist: Surviving and Thriving with the Self-Absorbed”, to the podcast. Wendy brings over twenty-five years of professional experience, and a specialty in treating both narcissists and those who deal with them, to this important conversation.
Wendy Behary defines narcissism and explains the traits that define both more typical “overt narcissists” and the “covert narcissists” she refers to as ‘virtuous victims’. Narcissistic individuals all carry the same sense of very self-absorbed energy. Dr. Laura and Wendy explore why narcissists do tend to gravitate to professional work and leadership positions, and Wendy shares the pros of their leadership as well as the devastating cons. Wendy has vast experience, through her extensive work as a therapist, on how to deal with a narcissist and why certain approaches work and others don’t. She wrote her book to help the people living and working with narcissists identify opportunities to get them help, while liberating themselves from self-blame.
“I think one of the toughest situations is when you're working with or for someone like this, especially if it's your boss or supervisor, because you may just not have the luxury of just leaving. Or the ease of transitioning into a whole new job. If you can, it may be the best way. But for most people that isn't the case. And so I guide them, as you probably do too, Laura, with strategies like: set limits as much as you can, try to limit your exposure, keep yourself tucked away from the narcissist as much as you can. Don't be trying to win them over. It's really a lost cause.” - Wendy Behary

Dr. Laura and DDS Dobson-Smith, CEO of SoulTrained and author of “You Can Be Yourself Here: Your Pocket Guide to Creating Inclusive Workplaces by Using the Psychology of Belonging”, explore work-life wellness in their second conversation. DDS breaks down how a culture of belonging directly impacts wellness at work.
Dr. Laura and DDS share personal stories from their own lives that illustrate times when they didn’t feel that vital sense of belonging in a space. They explore the impact that had on their senses of self. DDS also likens work-life wellness, or “work-life blend” as they call it, to a pie and how each slice of your life is part of the overall pie in context. They discuss that choices in terms of time you give to work, hobbies or relationships mean other pieces of the pie must necessarily shrink to accommodate. DDS reveals the book and podcast they most recommend and their hope for how people can improve workplaces in the future.
“I love that you call it work-life wellness. Because I refer to it as work-life blend. And I just don't believe in the concept of work-life balance, because that phrase in and of itself is saying there's work and there's life. And I like to remind my clients that work is one context of life. And that your life is made up of many contexts. … And so for me, work-life blend means being able to look at all of the contexts of my life, and approaching them, and experiencing them, in ways that are fulfilling.” - DDS Dobson-Smith

DDS Dobson-Smith is a licensed therapist, author, executive coach, speaker on leadership and growth, and a Reiki master — all in service of helping others grow and become who they are. Dr. Laura welcomes DDS Dobson-Smith, CEO of SoulTrained and author of “You Can Be Yourself Here: Your Pocket Guide to Creating Inclusive Workplaces by Using the Psychology of Belonging”, to the podcast to explore the vital subject of belonging through the lens of psychology and corporate culture. DDS has lived experience as a queer person and a long career in corporate America, Europe, and Asia that informs their focus on belonging in workplaces.
DDS shares insight on the key differences between diversity, inclusion, and belonging. They explain how inclusion can’t exist without diversity, but a workplace can be diverse without fostering inclusion. Dr. Laura and DDS explore ways in which DDS’s book defines conditions for creating a culture of belonging, starting with people at the top levels. DDS highlights how it’s not just major situations that can be toxic but small, ingrained behavior we don’t think about. This episode is vital to understanding how any organization can support an individual and foster belonging through leadership.
“So belonging... I often find that diversity and inclusion are said almost as if they're the same word these days. And they're definitely said in the same sentence, but they are different things. Diversity is a fact. You know, when you look around in an organization, do you see people who are like you? And do you see people who are not like you? The answer is either yes or no. And if the answer is yes to both of those questions, then you could probably safely say this organization has diversity. Inclusion is a behavior and a set of behaviors.” - DDS Dobson-Smith

Dr. Laura welcomes Lorne Rubis, thought leader and Co-Founder of Belongify.com, back to the podcast to continue their conversation on inclusion and belonging. Having previously examined the differences between inclusion and belonging, they now discuss the wider implications of remote working through the pandemic and whether or not that has detracted from fostering a culture of belonging. Lorne shares thoughts from personal experience around how connection in any context cannot be taken for granted.
Dr. Laura delves into Lorne’s thoughts on work-life wellness and how to maintain balance. Lorne explains how he views all aspects of life through the lens of what he calls “personal equity”. He shares that balance can be difficult but the idea of being mindful and integrating all necessary parts of culture, growth, relationships, rest, and work into a self-aware life is ultimately the goal. Lorne allows listeners a glimpse into some of his greatest achievements and challenges, and gives important insights into how people evolve and stay connected.
“But generally, we want to love, we want to belong, we want to be seen. And in the best way. And if I could wish that: oh, the strides we would make!” - Lorne Rubis
About Lorne Rubis:
Lorne Rubis is currently the Co-Founder of Belongify.com and has been the CEO of two privately held international companies. Lorne is a published author (‘The Character Triangle’) and holds a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta and a Master of Science in Industrial and Labour Relations from the University of Oregon. He teaches courses on Culture and HR strategy at the U of Alberta EMBA program and at Harvard’s School of Extension.

Lorne Rubis, thought leader and Co-Founder of Belongify.com, joins Dr. Laura to talk about the journey from inclusion to belonging, and the differences between the two ideals. Lorne Rubis explains how his research into extraordinary and highly adaptive cultures led him to establish a foundation from which to bring leadership into alignment on advancing culture. He details to Dr. Laura how Belongify.com is part of that evolution.
Dr. Laura hears foundational stories from Lorne’s past that helped shape his thoughts around inclusion and belonging. They discuss how belonging is more than inclusion, it’s what allows people to thrive as their true selves at work and contribute fully through their own talents. Lorne shares how vital leaders are to the development of belonging in workplace cultures, details some ways in which leaders can shift their thinking, and highlights some of what Belongify.com contributes to that journey. It is a thought-provoking and insightful conversation.
“So therefore, leaders have to think about their obligation as not to just get results, but how they might get results so they're optimizing the contribution, and building on the unique strengths, of every single person that makes up their team. And when they commit themselves to that, it takes on a different tone of behavior.” - Lorne Rubis

In the continuation of Dr. Laura’s conversation with Marie-Josée Lareau, Marie-Josée draws personal insights from her storied career and the work she does through her company, InnoveLab (now part of Humance), to explore creativity. She and Dr. Laura discuss intuition and the role it plays in being creative, and share practical advice on how to achieve a reset to spark new ideas.
Marie-Josée explains how she views creativity as a circle that requires a reset to ensure the loop is completed by landing on a mental “new white page”. To achieve this she encourages the expression of emotion through whatever means allows release: writing, painting, dancing, walking in nature. Dr. Laura links this to creativity within organizations and how leaders can encourage their people to achieve the creative flow. Marie-Josée has beautiful, expressive energy and an ability to address innovation and wellness in inspirational ways that can be applied on both personal and business levels. Her insight is not to be missed.
“So how can we learn to let go of those emotions that are in the way of our creativity, or that are present, in order to lead us into creating something new? And that, for our wellness, when I do this, personally, I feel much better. Like when I feel I have lots of emotion, and I just paint it down and write it down and I'm allowed to create something that isn't that pretty, it really helps me to create some new space. A bit like creating a new white page, right? And the more we are able to create that, the better we feel because it's like a reset.” - Marie-Josée Lareau
About Marie-Josée Lareau:
With over twenty years of experience in the field of creativity and innovation, Marie-Josée Lareau specializes in the development of corporate events that stimulate ideation, strategic thinking, cultural change and collaboration. She likes to adapt every event, conference, or workshop to offer solutions most adapted to the needs of her clients. She has worked with internationally renowned organizations such as Cirque du Soleil, HEC Montréal, McGill University, Concordia, C2-MTL and Abbvie Canada as Chief Innovation Officer.

Dr. Laura welcomes Marie-Josée Lareau to the podcast to explore creativity and innovation, especially in these times of remote work replacing in-office collaboration. Marie-Josée, who holds an EMBA and formerly worked with Cirque du Soleil, founded InnoveLab in Montreal where she applies over 20 years of experience in the field of innovation to teaching organizations how to stimulate ideation, strategic thinking, and collaboration.
Dr. Laura and Marie-Josée Lareau define exactly what creativity and innovation mean and how they, as concepts, apply to work and business health. Marie-Josée discusses the belief that distance is killing creativity by reframing the issue as one of presence, of being fully attentive in the moment. She shares some wonderful advice for promoting collaborative brainstorming and how organizations can encourage important ideas from people no matter where they are physically located.
“But when we are online, if we apply the right conditions, and if we set up everything, we can do a lot. And I would say the key ingredient to success is really the presence, like your full presence. Because online it’s too easy to be distracted; we all lived it where we were doing this and at the same time we're trying to type something else. And we're all over the place. And that is not a condition for creativity. It's not a condition for innovation. It's not a great condition for success. And this is what we confuse sometimes because I've lived and run sessions where we were all focused, all together, extremely present and willing for this to happen, and it was just awesome.” - Marie-Josée Lareau

Dr. Laura continues her conversation with Dr. Stefan Zavalin, Doctor of Physical Therapy and author of the book “Sit Less: Evolve Your Work and Life Without Compromising Your Health”, in Part 2 of their enlightening interview. Dr. Laura learns some surprising and inspiring things about Dr. Zavalin’s personal journey and how he has overcome obstacles in his life.
Stefan Zavalin details how he endured losing his vision to the point of legal blindness while in grad school. He persevered and finished his schooling, even going into the clinic after graduation. He explains that his support system, his family, and his love of movement generally kept him positive. Dr. Laura and Dr. Zavalin discuss how ‘Love to Move’ was born out of Stefan’s desire to found what he calls a “movement movement”, how he wants to inspire a global cultural change in how desk work is approached, and what helped inspire the journey in his own book.
“I'm very happy talking about it. And when people ask how much can you really see, I see shapes and outlines and colors. But the beauty about physical therapy and why I kind of kept going with it, is because a lot of it was hands on …. I definitely kept movement and exercise as part of that whole thing through my recovery and it really did help me get through a lot of the tough times. ” Dr. Stefan Zavalin
About Stefan Zavalin:
Stefan Zavalin is a Doctor of Physical Therapy with a passion for movement and health. After a few years working in the physical therapy world, Dr. Zavalin started a consulting business, Love to Move, to help office workers reduce sitting time. The vision: change the American work culture to help bring more movement to the everyday life of office workers to maintain their health, wellness, and ultimately, the longevity of their lives. In his free time, he likes to write songs on piano and guitar, critique a good cup of coffee, and play board games with his wife and friends.
