Dr. Laura is honoured to host Detective Dave Sweet, a 24 year member of the Calgary Police Service and published author, to the podcast to talk about tragedy and hope. Detective Sweet has been changed by many difficult and tragic situations, but works to learn lessons and retain a positive outlook.
Dr. Laura shares that she first met Dave Sweet during a tragedy that affected her own family, which was when she first read his book, Skeletons in my Closet. Dave wrote the book with the idea of it being a memoir of sorts, a legacy of the lessons he learned that he could pass down to his children and grandchildren. Each story in the book, no matter how disturbing, has a message or silver lining. Detective Sweet discusses some of those lessons, the subject of his next book, and what courage means in this enlightening interview.
“Tragedy isn't something that we wish for. But when it does come, there are often opportunities. It may be a challenge at first, but there are opportunities to find silver linings in that tragedy ...” - Dave Sweet
About Detective Dave Sweet:
With over 24 years of policing experience, Detective Dave Sweet has been involved in some of Canada’s most infamous and famous cases. In 2018 Mischievous Books published Dave’s first book, Skeletons in My Closet - Life Lessons from a Homicide Detective which was written in collaboration with his talented co-author Sarah Graham. Dave is currently writing his second book with acclaimed author Susan Forest due to release in the Spring of 2023. Dr. Laura invites Jennifer Buchanan, author of “Wellness, Wellplayed”, back to the show to discuss wellness through music. Jennifer discusses how music plays a key role in impacting our mood, memory, and productivity, and she shares stories about witnessing the power of music therapy in action.
Music has an incredible impact on our moods: Jennifer talks about how it can motivate us out of a slump and increase our serotonin levels. She details the positive effects of music on every stage of our lives. One of the physical areas in which music therapy has a demonstrable impact is in neuro rehab. Jennifer explains how challenges in fine or gross motor movement after a brain injury can be positively influenced by elements of music.
“So music has this incredible capacity to act like a drug on our system and … the hormones and neurotransmitters that affect us. You hear about the words dopamine, for example, and that feel-good oxytocin, which is that social bonding hormone that can be released in our system, and serotonin, which is the one you don't want to get too low because you start feeling low and there's this nice window of where serotonin needs to reside. And what we have found through the research and evidence is that music has this incredible capacity to be able to change those hormone levels in our system, especially when we use [music] regularly.” - Jennifer Buchanan
About Jennifer Buchanan:
Jennifer Buchanan is an award-winning author and Music Therapist, instrumental in the implementation of hundreds of music therapy programs throughout Canada since 1991. Her company JB Music Therapy has thrice been nominated for the Community Impact Award by her local Chamber of Commerce.
She is the author of several books including Wellness, Wellplayed: The Power of A Playlist and is a regularly invited guest to speak at industry conferences that aim to strengthen and inspire people working in healthcare, education, and the public sector including law enforcement. As a subject matter expert, Jennifer is a trusted source for many television media outlets across North America and has been featured in publications such as The Guardian and The Huffington Post.
As a board member and service provider with the National Music Centre, Jennifer champions music for health and wellness throughout Canada and beyond.

Dr. Laura is thrilled to welcome author, Music Therapist, and Founder of JB Music Therapy, Jennifer Buchanan, to the show to talk about the therapeutic benefits of music. Dr. Laura has personal experience with how JB Music Therapy helped her mother through late-stage dementia, and together she and Jennifer explore the wellness aspects of music and Jennifer’s new book “Wellness, Wellplayed”.
Jennifer Buchanan had her moment of epiphany about music’s therapeutic power when she was a tween asked to sing and play guitar for her ailing Granddad. Jennifer explains exactly what music therapy is and how her company employs it in different instances. She shares how her book “Wellness, Wellplayed” focuses on the inherent power of a playlist, and who will benefit from reading her books. This conversation sheds light on a beautiful aspect of wellness that offers so much but is sometimes overlooked as a therapeutic option or important habit.
“I was worrying and I always was feeling like all I want to do is hide. But the music kept pulling me out and helping me make my next best decisions. And that's essentially what I wrote about in the book, is around that science of how music legitimately works. It takes us from that whirr and that worry, slips us into the creative process of our hippocampus so we're able to make that executive decision and good decisions moving forward.” - Jennifer Buchanan

Dr. Laura is again joined by Dr. Alan Patterson, author of “Burn Ladders. Build Bridges. Pursuing Work with Meaning and Purpose”, to talk about how to measure success. Dr. Patterson challenges us to offer each other respect and to value our relationships as much as our achievements.
Dr. Alan Patterson and Dr. Laura discuss how unhappiness at work is often fuelled by a lack of equity, respect, and inclusion. They address the responsibilities leaders have to forge workplaces where people want to remain. Dr. Patterson shares his thoughts on givers versus takers in life, why relationships are so valuable, and how he hopes people will seek out curiosity and imagination in their jobs instead of simply climbing the ladder. This is a vital conversation on the metrics for measuring success in your life that will challenge listeners to examine their own choices and motives.
“I think people are emotionally worn out. The door opened and a tsunami came in. And I think people are really questioning, some more deeply than others. I mean, people need jobs. They need jobs to put food on the table. But I think it has kindled, not rekindled, the important situations and circumstances we need to think about when it comes to equity and fairness and inclusion. I mean, people want to be respected and acknowledged. And I think there's that level of unhappiness that was always there. But the dam broke and it's coming through loud and clear. I don't think we'll ever see work the way we saw it prior to 2020.” - Dr. Alan Patterson
About Dr. Alan Patterson:
Dr. Alan M. Patterson is an organizational development consultant, specializing in executive and leadership development. Having led hundreds of clients for over four decades, Dr. Patterson continues to ignore standard coaching methods, opting to pursue and lead clients down the path of meaningful careers that are not only successful, but also rewarding. Dr. Laura welcomes organizational development consultant and author Dr. Alan Patterson to the show to discuss his new book “Burn Ladders. Build Bridges: Pursuing Work with Meaning and Purpose”. Dr. Patterson’s thoughts on career development and work success align very closely with those of Dr. Laura and Canada Career Counselling.
Dr. Alan Patterson experienced his own major career shift when he lost his largest client and moved to doing more coaching on his own. He understands that career shifts can happen to anyone, at any time, and for any reason, but also that you can choose your own career shift. Dr. Patterson advocates for owning your career development and making choices. He stresses the importance of networking and he maintains that building relationships is the most important factor in career satisfaction. Dr. Laura and Dr. Patterson’s conversation will inspire you to examine your own career path.
“... that's one thing that I think is problematic; that ladder climbing, and the state of education and what it does and what it reinforces for the way people think. I think curiosity has been engineered out and I think that's a travesty.” - Dr. Alan Patterson

Dr. Laura and guest Meghan Reid, psychologist and co-founder of Canada Career Counselling, discuss how career fulfillment, or lack thereof, can affect our work and overall life wellness. Meghan shares how to assess if your career is impacting your wellbeing and how to get back into balance.
If you dread Mondays starting on Sunday, you might not be in the right career. Meghan Reid explains the mental health impacts of career dissatisfaction and how that manifests in us. She also details exactly how she approaches career counseling with a client who has requested her help. Dr. Laura and Meghan address the necessity of identifying core values and having an ability to live them as being a key factor in career satisfaction. She shares important advice on achieving and maintaining your work-life wellness. This episode contains invaluable resources, insight, and advice for anyone struggling with work or with keeping work from consuming their lives.
“To me, it's all about integrity. If you say you value work-life balance, but then your actions don't align with that, like you're sending emails as a boss at 11pm, it doesn't bode well for the rest of the organization. So I think it's identifying your values and then clarifying: what does it look like to live and work in alignment with those values?” - Meghan Reid
About Meghan Reid:
Meghan Reid, M.A., C. Psych, is a Toronto-based psychologist and entrepreneur. She specializes in Counselling Psychology and is recognized for her expertise in Career and Workplace Psychology. She is the co-owner of Canada Career Counselling, a leading provider of career-development services, and led the expansion of the firm into the Ontario and Nova Scotia markets. She is a sought-after speaker, panelist, facilitator, and trainer, and often shares her expert opinion on career, workplace, and mental health matters with the media. Meghan can be described as warm and empathetic, yet candid, realistic, and strategic.
Through both her individual and organizational work, Meghan’s mission is to help Canadians achieve personal success and career fulfillment. She enjoys working directly with clients, managing and supporting her team, and providing supervision and consultation to counsellors working in the career counselling space. Meghan is also passionate about supporting leaders and teams in their professional development to improve workplace culture and employee effectiveness. Common career development concerns she addresses in her work include: uncertainty around career transitions; navigating workplace politics; challenges progressing into leadership roles; difficulty with boundary setting and balancing work and life; burnout and other mental health challenges; and developing confidence, assertiveness and communication skills.
Meghan holds a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from McGill University and a Bachelor of Arts with an Honours Specialization in Psychology from the University of Western Ontario. She is a Registered Psychologist with the College of Psychologists of Ontario.

Dr. Laura welcomes Meghan Reid, psychologist and co-owner of Canada Career Counselling, to the podcast to discuss career moves and “the great re-evaluation”. Meghan brings a wealth of experience in helping clients make strategic and fulfilling career transitions to this conversation.
Meghan Reid has always been drawn to helping people and solving their career and work-related challenges. She breaks down the misconceptions surrounding career counselling; the surprise people have at learning this service offered by psychologists even exists. Meghan and Dr. Laura discuss how people’s fear of “failing” at a career needs reframing so they can see the benefits of a career transition. Meghan also identifies three major ways in which organizations are letting employees down, which is leading to the seeming flood of employee resignations. This compelling episode will help you evaluate your own career satisfaction and give guidance to anyone contemplating a move.
“... I think it's shifting or flipping the script on how we match to jobs. I think now a lot of it is 'Here are the jobs that exist, which one can you fit yourself into', as opposed to ‘don't even think about the jobs that are out there, think about what you would want to be doing. And then identify opportunities that could fit you.’” - Meghan Reid

Dr. Laura welcomes New York Times bestselling author and thought leader Cy Wakeman back to the podcast. Dr. Laura dives into aspects of Cy’s most recent book, “Life’s Messy, Live Happy”, and Cy offers her unique and inspirational perspective on the reality of why she wrote the book.
Cy Wakeman challenges listeners to examine what happiness really is and discusses what she terms “toxic positivity” with Dr. Laura. Cy did not want to write a book simply telling people how to be happy, but wanted to say “hey, join in the club of humanness - this is our human experience”. She weighs in on the three questions that have changed her life, the true depths of how to look at gratitude, and the differences between self-care and self-soothing. Cy’s warm presence and the insightful thoughts she shares with Dr. Laura are not to be missed.
“And so I wanted to write a book that wasn't about toxic positivity, like pressuring people to be happy in the midst of a pandemic, but really showing people how you can be happy in the context of your entire life, that there's space for all of it. You can build a life big enough to hold sadness and happiness at the same time.” - Cy Wakeman

Dr. Laura welcomes Dr. Nina W. Brown back to the show. Dr. Brown is a Distinguished Fellow American Group Psychotherapy Association, an eminent scholar and professor at Old Dominion University in Virginia, USA. Through her career, Nina has authored over forty books, ten of which are on the subject of narcissism. Dr. Brown discusses how her latest book is more a guide to helping individuals understand themselves in order to better cope with the narcissist in their life, a tactic she finds rewarding.
Dr. Laura hears from Nina exactly how the approach of understanding self, of gaining awareness, leads to protecting ourselves and thriving into what Dr. Brown terms “positive revenge”. On the subject of wellness, Nina shares how she unwinds and refreshes outside of work by reading mystery and science fiction books. She shares advice on writing something every day, whatever bit you can - a sentence or paragraph even - in order to stay focused on a writing goal. Dr. Brown has a humble and incredibly wise outlook on life. Her insights on coping with narcissism and on cultivating the value of self will inspire everyone who hears her.
“And so this is how we can develop ourselves, particularly with the empathy, because one of the defining characteristics of someone with a narcissistic personality disorder, is a lack of empathy. And so what we can work with is developing ourselves so that we can be empathic, that we can feel what the other person is feeling, without losing the sense of ourselves as being separate and distinct from them. We don't become enmeshed, we don't become overwhelmed.” - Nina W. Brown
