As we approach another holiday, how do we find balance in our health habits to enjoy the season, be sociable and still be measured in our eating and drinking, so that we don't feel the need to then starve or deprive ourselves?
In the Western World, many of us eat more than we physically need to over Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays. Why is it ok to binge on chocolate and cheese at 8am in the morning for the best part of December? And then we often set New Year's resolutions to go on faddy diets, restrict certain food groups or start new exercise regimes.
In this episode, Emma and Sheryl share some of the healthy habits they have been 'trying on' over 2019 and discuss ways that we can go into 2020 without the self-flagellation that usually comes from setting unrealistic and extreme health goals.
We also talk about alcohol and drinking and whether it will become as socially unacceptable as smoking. Perhaps unlikely in our lifetime but not an impossible reality. The adverse effects of alcohol are still under-estimated in a society where anxiety and depression are on the increase, even though alcohol is a depressant (amongst other things). Mornings of regret following office parties is also another reason to cut back on the drink.
We can foster healthier habits by changing our relationship with food and drink just by being more mindful and introducing new, healthy choices. This all goes into the mix of getting us better equipped for our life's work, ready to be our better selves in the New Year.
