In part 3 of this series, Hawk continues his deep dive into the ideology of White Christian Nationalism in the United States. He defines it as a political movement that exploits religion for political gain, driven by well-funded elites rather than a grassroots effort. At its core is the belief that America was founded as a Christian nation for white Europeans, and that laws should be based on the Bible to maintain the power and control of straight, white, Christian men over other groups. Hawk highlights how organizations promoting this ideology rewrite history and create alternative "patriot" materials reframing the origins of America through their racist lens.

Hawk draws from interviews and books analyzing data and surveys of white Christian nationalist supporters. A striking contrast emerged - white respondents viewed America as a nostalgic return to an authoritarian, segregated past, while Black Christian respondents saw it more aspirationally, as a nation striving to uphold its ideals of equality. Hawk exposes the "holy trinity" underpinning their beliefs of freedom for themselves, order imposed on others, and the embrace of violence through unrestricted gun rights to dominate over minority groups.

The ultimate goal, according to Hawk's research, is for white Christian nationalists to control all levers of government after a potential Trump re-election in 2024. This would enable them to remake America as an authoritarian, Christian nationalist society led by straight white men, revoking rights from those deemed insufficiently Christian, non-white, LGBTQ or female. Hawk warns this anti-democratic movement represents an existential threat to American pluralism and freedoms.
