The Boat Galley

Why Your Boat Needs a Fire Blanket

Listen Later

Sure, you have a fire extinguisher on your boat. But you still need a fire blanket. Here are a few reasons why.

Summary

Fire blankets are crucial to have aboard--especially near your galley. A fire blanket smothers small fires without making a mess. I'm not saying you should have a fire blanket instead of extinguishers. But it's one more tool that might save your boat.

Fire blankets work best for small, contained fires. If flames come out the side of the blanket, turn to the extinguisher.

How does it work? Hold the straps on the blanket. Make sure the blanket covers the back of your hands. Then place it over the flames to smother it. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes to be sure the fire is out and won't flare up again.

Make sure you store your fire blanket near the galley. And need to be able to reach it without leaning over flames.

During a fire aboard Barefoot Gal, we relied on both the extinguishers and our fire blanket. You don't want to be caught short when disaster strikes on your boat.
