Today I want to draw your attention to something that is finally getting a little more of the recognition it deserves, especially since at least 10% of women and people who bleed experience it: Endometriosis.

Sometimes mistaken for “a painful bleed”, endometriosis is actually a condition where tissue similar but not identical to the endometrial lining of the uterus that we shed every bleed, grows outside of it (e.g. outside of the uterus, around the fallopian tubes, the ovaries, but also the intestines, lungs or scar tissue anywhere in the body).

Unfortunately, many receive their diagnosis very, very late, complemented by the message “You’re infertile and incurable! Get a hysterectomy …” which is insensitive and not the answer!

My guest, women’s pelvic health specialist Amy Connor, and I speak about how healing is possible when we know how to access the wisdom that lives inside of our body.

As women and/or menstruators, we transition all the time. Our whole life is about transitions, because we transition from inner season to inner season roughly every seven days, if not less. There is no permanence.

But knowing that there is a rhythm over the whole cycle, and that you will have times when you feel more energetic and times where you feel more inward and times where you feel more creative and times where you feel more reflective, will allow you to go easy on yourself and not make yourself wrong for it, because it's just a natural part of life.

And we can start using our personal cycle and the transitions that we move through as a practice ground for when life really throws us a curve ball and we have to go through a bigger transition.

“Every time you experience a change, you experience a death.” – wise words from my guest, Death Dominatrix Brionna Ned :-)

In this episode of the Fireside Chat series, we speak about the death experience every person goes through multiple times throughout their life. Because whenever change occurs (whether forced upon us by outside circumstances or emerging through our constant evolution as human beings), an old version or part of us dies to make room for a new version to be born.

The trouble is that we often live in societies that are death-averse, so we haven’t learned to tap into the medicine of intentional endings. We are afraid of the unknown outcome of the change and don’t dare to carve out the necessary space to sit with the intensity of emotions like grief and fear and maybe even excitement.

But change doesn’t always mean your whole life is going to be turned upside down, sometimes all that’s needed are a few little tweaks and you’re good to go and navigate the transition on your own.

Working in the realm of empowerment, we have to navigate a fine line between our genuine wish to support people, having them feel like the powerful being they are, and perpetuating a world view that’s heavily influenced by patriarchal-colonialist thinking …

So to anyone using the phrase “I empower XYZ (person)”: Stop it! You can’t empower another person, because the power is already in them!

You can help them recognise their own agency, so they feel more empowered in their life.

And if you think this is only semantics, remember that the words we use show our perception of the world and create our reality. Spelling comes from spell! What kind of spell do you want to weave?

All Life is cyclical. Yet living in a society that is built in a linear fashion, focused on progression and constant expansion - better, higher, faster -, we can sometimes forget that ebbs and the downward spirals belong to life as much as the flows and upward spirals.
