March 09, 2021Tri This: S1E8 - Making the Best TransitionOn this episode of Tri This, Dr Kirstin Lauritzen covers the details for an efficient transition. When she first started with Triathlon she didn't even know what a transition was and how to do it. She also realized that out of the many triathlon podcasts she listened to, nobody talked about it. For obvious reasons, people are more interested in how to make their swim, bike and run faster, but an efficient transition is important. Not to mention how overwhelming the racks filled with bikes can be if it's your first one. In this episode we cover it all. How to transition from the swim to bike and from the bike to the run. There's also some differences between local races and bigger races, like Ironman and other World Triathlon races. Transitioning well is actually quite critical and can be overwhelming at your first race. Make sure to check out this episode for some tips for being prepared. March 02, 2021S1E7 - Kirstin has Fun in the SunOn this week’s episode Kirstin exclaims her excitement for finally a run in the sun after a lot of cold, dark, wet winter runs. She tells us how her training is shifting a bit as we get even closer to the Coeur D'Alene Ironman on June 27th. Kirstin also added a new layer to the weekly updates: how her nutrition changes based on her cycle. At first, learning how nutrition can and needs to shift with your training throughout your cycle can be a bit confusing. Sometimes, hearing how somebody else incorporates it into their routine can remove the confusion and hopefully help you see how easy it can be. Also, Kirstin hopes to inspire you to at least start tracking your cycle, or have your athletes start tracking their cycles, if you don't already. We finish up this episode with a talk on GI distress and some of the pitfalls athletes get into when they are looking to get through a race without looking for a bathroom.Host: Dr. Kirstin Lauritzen.Duration: 31 mins. For more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. February 22, 2021S1E13: Rebecca Lobo, 1995 CWSA Award WinnerAs the youngest of three children, Rebecca Lobo, was the tagalong sister that took her into the world of sports and she spent time alone in her rural town shooting hoops on her stone pebble driveway. Hours of practice eventually led to a full scholarship at University of Connecticut - a decision she made that was not supported by her parents. We hear about her decision and the collegiate culmination of winning a national championship as she describes the weekend in Minneapolis that changed her life. She recounts her pride in winning the Honda Cup, and especially because it was more than basketball and especially notable since it was in the early days when women were not getting the recognition they deserved in sport. Rebecca shares the best advice given to her by her college coach, Geno Auriemma, “you have to be who you are - don’t try to be more and don’t let yourself be less”. Advice that has served her well throughout her Olympic career where there was a lot of pressure after the USA had won a bronze medal and the fledging WNBA Pro League. Rebecca talks about overcoming shyness in front of a microphone and in life. One of those voices resonates with her Hispanic heritage at a time when there were few basketball players. She subsequently developed a fan following and eventually alongside her mother they created a scholarship to encourage diversity in medical care. Rebecca explains how she became more adept at the microphone and progressed in broadcasting from sideline reporting to calling games, anchoring and analyzing in the studio as well as sharing her experience with aspiring broadcasters.Host: Chris Voelz, CWSA Executive DirectorPodcast length: 43 mins.A co-production with The Collegiate Women’s Sports AwardsFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com.
