Working Dog Radio

Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, sit down with⁣ retired Mesa Police dog handler and trainer, former Southwest Regional Director for the National Police Canine Association, Arizona Law Enforcement Canine Association member, and current instructor with Paraclete K9, Scott Callendar.  Paracletek9.com

Scott Callendar found his love for working dogs as his stepfather was a police dog handler.  Callendar started attending police dog training while he was still a teenager and even assisted his stepmother with detection training. The gents hit on his background, and then quickly delve into Callendar’s extensive experiences. From Schutzhund to revolutionizing his department’s training methods, from various training classes he teaches to shaping behaviors with the ecollar and using as a communication tool, Callendar is a wealth of information! You are guaranteed to learn something from this episode!

Callendar started his career as a police officer with the City of Mesa Police Department in 1995. He served as patrol officer, part of the bicycle unit, an undercover narcotics detective for the Special Investigations Division (2001), part of the high-risk surveillance/apprehension team, working his way into SWAT (2004), and finally worked into K9 as a dog handler for the Special Operations/Tactical Team (2008). As K9, Callendar’s first dog was a “hand-me-down”, but he was able to revolutionize the way his department trained their dogs; this eventually lead to Callendar being one of two trainers for his department in 2012, and then the head trainer in 2017. Callendar retired from the police force in 2020, after over two decades of service.

During his career, Callendar developed an annual high-risk deployment seminar in Arizona, and several hundred dog teams from all over the United States have attended this seminar since its inception in 2015. In addition to his experience with the police department, Callendar has been a member of the Arizona Law Enforcement Canine Association, where he’s been on the training committee since 2011.  Callendar was also named Southwest Regional Director for the National Police Canine Association in 2015, and held this position until 2020. Callendar was also employed by K9 Training Consultants from 2015 until 2020 where he worked as a dog trainer/instructor, and helped train security dog teams for a large hospital group in Arizona. Callendar has also worked as a trainer/instructor for Paraclete K9 since 2017.

Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, sit down with⁣ the host of Shots Fired podcast, Field Survival Training course instructor, and current K9 unit supervisor serving in Northern California, Police Sergeant Kyle Shoberg.

The gents covered a lot of ground in this episode, from how Shoberg first got into law enforcement at the age of 20, and his 15 years of law enforcement experience, to Shoberg being assigned to the K9 unit in 2014 (and how Shoberg was cautiously afraid of the dogs!), and his 7 years of K9 Handler experience, including working with the SWAT team (Shoberg is POST certified in SWAT & K9 Interacting During Deployment/SKIDDs).

Delving further, Shoberg has been a part of numerous critical incidents, including direct involvement in 4 officer involved shootings, over 500 K9 deployments, and over 60 K9 apprehensions. He is the recipient of several police commendations and awards, most notably two Medal of Valor's, the Distinguished Service Medal, and a Life Saving Ribbon where he was credited for saving the life of an officer who had been shot in the line of duty. Shoberg has presented to various law enforcement agencies throughout the country, as well as speaking at several law enforcement conferences regarding officer wellness and debriefing his officer involved shootings.

This is not an episode you want to miss! So be sure to sit down and learn a thing or two from our guest, and check out his podcast, Shots Fired, right after! Follow him on Instagram at @Kyle_shoberg

Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, sit down with⁣ Street Cop Training, All Things K9 course Instructor and Police K9 Handler, Josh Brainard.

⁣

The gents get into what it was like to get into K9 by working at one of the largest police and military kennels in the world, and then what it was like to have many different jobs there, including a supervisor position- training, handling, and decoying dogs. Josh oversaw several training programs and imprinted working dogs in narcotics, detection, and tracking. Josh also contracted as an Explosives Detection Handler at major events like Cincinnati Bengals NFL games. As a police officer, Josh is a K9 handler and is currently teamed with a dual purpose K9. Since 2017, Josh has been assigned to his department’s Criminal Interdiction Unit as a K9 Handler, as well as their Street Crimes Unit and High Risk Tracking Team. Josh and his partner have tracked and apprehended several dangerous individuals and are responsible for many significant seizures of drugs, firearms, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash. Josh has thousands of hours of K9 training and is a graduate of several renowned K9 Tactical Tracking schools as well as Advanced Scent Detection, K9 Trailing, and K9 Imprinting courses. Josh also has a resume stocked full of Criminal Interdiction training. Josh and his partner have been medalists at the American Working Dogs K9 Olympics numerous times and Josh was named Top Cop at his agency in 2017. Instructor Josh Brainard has trained hundreds of working dogs and is currently the lead K9 trainer at his police agency. Josh Brainard comes to Street Cop with significant knowledge on police working dogs and how they can enhance our missions!

As an All Things K9 Course Instructor, Josh gives current K9 handlers a fresh perspective and deeper understanding of all things K9. This class helps officers better understand how police working dogs function, and explains how to interact more efficiently alongside K9 Teams. Supervisors gain a better understanding of how to support these valuable resources and prevent liability against their units. For those police officers with aspirations to become a K9 handler, this class gives them a jump start to understand the science of the craft! Course attendees learn about K9 narcotics sniffs of vehicles, currency, parcels, buildings, and open areas. This course also explores the use of a K9 in high-risk vehicle stops, tracking, trailing and open area searches for suspects. Instructor Brainard talks about the use of perimeters for containment, as well as collecting, preserving, and presenting scent evidence as it relates to manhunts. Real deployment videos are shown to explain how suspects were located and narcotics were seized.

If you can’t attend the class, be sure to listen to this episode, it’s packed full of good training tips!!

Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, are joined again by Dave and John Howard of Kinetic Dog Food.

We talk about @kineticdogfood all the time and for good reason. This, in our opinion, is the BEST dry dog food and supplements out there!! We know so many people who have had their dogs make the switch to Kinetic dog food for many reasons; from weight loss, skin issues, weight gain, and so much more. All now doing great on it! The gents recapped who Kinetic Dog Food is, and how they came to be. They go over myths and facts in the working dog food industry, and also talked about issues your dog may be having and how their food may be causing it.

They delved into the grain-free fad and where a dog’s protein should come from. Fueling a working dog can be tough, but they need that high quality food to give them the energy and nutrients that they require for the work we ask them to do! Kinetic Dog Food has a great balance of healthy meats and grains, and is made specifically for working and sporting dogs. They have a full line of foods and supplements available, and they’ve been working to perfect their line with thousands of dogs and hundreds of departments across the US.

In the last segment, they talked about the TV show that Kinetic has, Unleashed K9, which is going into its 3rd season!

⁣

If you are looking for a high quality dry dog food or supplements from a team that cares and knows what they are doing, look no further!!⁣ We take care of our own bodies and watch what we eat; we need to be doing the same for our dogs to help them live long and healthy lives!  If you want the best, Kinetic Dog food is where it’s at! ⁣⁣

Do you think we should get rid of dogs that bite?  Will your dog out?  Should you call your dog off with a verbal out, or hard out? You’ll want to hear what this guest has to say!⁣

⁣

Episode 182: Protecting the Bite with Eugene⁣

Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, sit down with⁣ Eugene P. Ramirez. ⁣

This is an important episode to listen to if you handle a K9 or if you are in law enforcement, as there is a national movement to get rid of bite dogs. Ramirez is working to stop the removal of these canines, and he and the gents discuss the legalities of having a bite dog on the team, and best practices to follow to help preemptively protect your dog and team. Ramirez instructed a class at HITS going over report writing, policies and procedures, training issues, use of force issues, supervisor liability, contemporary issues facing law enforcement, and how to defend against the inevitable lawsuit - some of which, he highlights for the listeners in this episode.⁣

⁣

Former Deputy District Attorney for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Eugene P. Ramirez received his degree in Political Science from California State University, where he minored in both Criminal Justice and Public Policy. This episode is from our HITS K9 conference series. Speaking of HITS, they will be returning to Arizona next year, August 15-18, in Scottsdale at the Westin Kierland Resort. Get your tickets to this conference early!⁣ (Speaking of tickets, did you know Eric has an e-collar course?)⁣

Vartanian has almost three decades’ worth of experience as a professional climber, doing DoD contracts with Tier 1 units around Bragg, and using the PACE method. This provided Vartanian with an intimate knowledge of quality materials, which helped him modify his own gear. After his time in the US Marine Corps, Vartanian became a police officer in South Carolina. As a police officer, Vartanian also modified some of his gear, including the infamous rifle sling. This piece of equipment picked up popularity among the instructors, the other officers, the folks at the range, etc. After noticing the equipment a K9 handler was using, Vartanian thought he could “hear the stitching coming out” and didn’t want the patrol dog that he works with to bite him, so Vartanian asked the handler if he could make a better leash, would he use it? And Modern Icon was born. (Also, Vartanian gave a shout out to Modern Icon’s “frenemy”, Ray Allen, for whom there is a mutual respect for each other!)
