Opinions wanted! Can you give a first time handler a Malinois??

The gents delve into this topic!⁣ ⁣

⁣Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, sat down with⁣ Billy Sawyer and Brian of Bellator K9 ⁣

This is the first episode from our HITS K9 conference series.

Speaking of HITS, they will be returning to Arizona August 15-18 2023 in Scottsdale, AZ at the Westin Kierland Resort. Get your tickets to this conference early! Joining us for our first episode is Billy and Brian of Bellator K9. ⁣

⁣ Billy instructed at Blueline, and is currently a supervisor in Colorado, and runs the K9 unit. Billy joined the military out of high school, and served for 4 years. He then joined the undercover narcotics team for Jacksonville, Fl, which is a Tier 1 Agency, before moving to Colorado where he is now also part of the SWAT team, and helps run 5 dogs. ⁣ ⁣

Brian is also serving in Colorado. Brian first became a police officer in ‘94, joined the K-9 unit in ‘97, and became a trainer in ‘02.⁣ ⁣

Eric mentions Colorado has a propensity for violence, so much so, even his tattoo artist has talked about it! The guys then get into why they prefer to buy green, then train to pass certs, but then also train for the streets. Opinions fly about giving a green handler a Malinois, and the guys concur: “I’d rather get rid of a handler than a great dog. Dogs don’t hold grudges, people do.”⁣ ⁣ Speaking of, the guys get into the importance of SWAT integration. “If we think it’s too dangerous, paws before boots, rather bury my dog than my friend.” Then they talk about drones and searching with drones instead of a robot, and what it’s like to work that with a K9. (You’ll want to hear the story about how effective this drone usage was on a suspect!)⁣ ⁣

Billy and Brian get into Bellator K9, and why they started it based on tactics. They see, far too often, too many people chasing their dogs’ buttholes. They are always learning and figuring out ways to evolve so that handlers and K9s won’t get hurt. Bellator K9 are doing seminars (you can reach out to them at bellator_k9 on Instagram and Facebook for more information) so that your dog can be exposed to flash-bangs, drones, tunnels, etc, and they will incorporate it all together.⁣

Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, sat down with⁣ Michael Ellis. ⁣ ⁣

A man who truly needs no introduction! Michael Ellis previously joined us for Episode 100, and you guys have been wanting him back ever since (can’t say we blame you!). We are honored to have him back again, and we are also joined by a quick special guest appearance from Cameron Ford. It’s impossible to listen to this episode and NOT learn something new. Go ahead, try. 😜⁣ ⁣

The gents chat about the parallels between training dogs, and training people, whether in the pet dog industry, or K9, and how it’s obviously easier to train folks who are motivated to learn in the first place. Finding what motivates people, adapting YOUR methods to suit what the student needs, and how that is true for the dogs we work with also. “It depends on the dog” #Ellisism Your hosts join Michael Ellis as he reflects on how training has evolved, from “yank and crank” methods to the giant “zap” ecollars from the 80’s, balanced training and more. (Even mentioned how technology has changed from the Leerburg VHS tapes to online courses 😂) ⁣ ⁣

You won’t want to miss this episode, full of little nuggets of wisdom from one of THE top folks in the industry.

Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, sat down with⁣ the program director for a nonprofit 501(c)3, K9 Search OK, Bradley Morris.⁣

⁣

The Gents talked with Bradley Morris from K9 Search OK, who told us how he got into SAR back in 2004, and the dedication that the all volunteer force has for the work they do. From 2005 to 2015, Morris was handler to a GSD named Reuben, who did trailing and HR. In 2019, Morris started his second GSD, named Lola, who is currently certified in trailing and starting on HR.⁣ Throughout his time in SAR, Morris has focused primarily on missing person SAR. Not only a canine handler, Morris is also a highly certified ground searcher and an instructor/evaluated for NASAR’s ground searcher disciplines. He is also well qualified as a search manager and planner. Morris has been a member of Civil Air Patrol and led a CERT. Though, volunteer SAR is where he spends most of his time.⁣

Additionally, the Gents dive into the Still-Smoking case of a K9 search and location of someone who had been missing for 4 years(!) from the perspective of someone who was on the ground. Morris shares with us the full computer diagram used during and after the search. The software is SARTopo, the data and analytics can be found in a book and an app titled Lost Person Behavior, which is the SAR Bible. ⁣

Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, sat down with Badge-to-Business Owner, MLK9 Mike Lilley. Lilley grew up with hunting dogs, which proved to be invaluable for his later career as a State Law Enforcement Officer with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). (You will NOT want to miss their conversation about hogs, alligators, and panthers… 🐗🐊🐆 Oh my! 👀)

Lilley’s first parter, Roscoe the Lab, put all of Lilley’s training to the test, but they became an unstoppable team for tracking, recovering articles, and detecting fish and game. After a career shift to Hendry County Sheriff's Office K9, Lilley’s second partner, Neko the hand-selected Malinois, certified in Patrol, Tracking and Narcotics detection with Lilley.

Lilley was given his Police K9 Trainer's certification and officially became a professional dog trainer in 2016. He was promoted to Sargent over the K9 Unit. (There are some good training tidbits, so be sure to listen up!) Lilley soon opened his pet dog training business and works with pet dogs in basic and advanced obedience along with civilian scent detection and law enforcement K9s. He also is an instructor for K9s United providing modern training techniques to agencies in need across the United States. Additionally, Lilley is a Silver School graduate under the teaching of Bart and Michael Bellon, and attended the Gold School in March of 2022.

There are DEFINITELY some training gems and hilarious tangents sprinkled throughout this episode, so be sure to follow him at @mike_lilley_k9

Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, sat down at Blueline Conference with Ted’s favorite guest and all around good guy, White Beard K9 Inc’s Howard Young. This will be the final episode for the Blueline conference series. ⁣

Young has had a passion for working dogs from a young age, leading ultimately to an over 25-year career supporting the Shelby NC Police Department as their civilian K9 training manager. In that time, he oversaw the development, procurement, and expansion of their K9 capabilities. His career success is now being translated into K9 training and support through his company White Beard K9, Inc. Since 2018 White Beard K9 has been training multiple agencies, allowing Young to continue to share his knowledge and experiences, hoping to impassion and broaden the skills of others to be successful in the world of working dogs.

From “yank & crank” to marker training, Young discusses how his methodology changed over time. Young’s Blueline Course Summary says it all: “Trainers and handlers frequently mark behaviors unknowingly. The focus of this class is to understand the power of marking and reinforcing behaviors we desire in our K9s. The power of the marker is vitally important in building a solid foundation, but also throughout the dog’s career. Marking the right behavior doesn’t just apply to detection.” ⁣

Your Working Dog Radio hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, sat down at Blueline with⁣ @bradysk9fund⁣, Leah and Brady Snakovsky. ⁣

⁣

⁣In 2018, 8yr old Brady was watching his favorite show - Live PD - when he noticed the dog wasn’t wearing a vest like his handler and wondered why. Mom Leah explained that equipment was expensive, and departments can’t always afford it. So Brady and his mom started a GoFundMe, and raised enough for 4 vests. They became an official 501(c)(3) non-profit charity early 2019, and have raised thousands of dollars and donated hundreds of vests since then - but they still need YOUR help!⁣

⁣

The ethics Leah demonstrates by not sitting on donated funds, but using those funds to go back directly to the dogs, is truly admirable and we can’t commend the team enough! Furthermore, injured K9s take priority, and move to the top of the wait list to receive a LOF Defense Systems K9 StreetFighter from the charity. ⁣

⁣

If you’re planning to be in Middleburg Heights, OH on Friday, September 23, swing by Fat Heads Brewery Tap Room and show Brady’s K9 Fund some support! If you won’t be there, you can still support this charity by following their profiles on Facebook and Instagram, liking & sharing their posts, buying & repping their merch, and donating if you can!⁣ BradysK9fund.com

⁣Blueline K9 Conference Series continues with Worthless Handler and Denmother K9! This episode is jam packed with information, and filmed on location with our guests, so check us out on 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲!⁣

⁣Both gents are return guests; the infamous Wortheless Handler joined us for Episode 40 (the only episode we’ve ever had to take down because it turned his life upside down!), and Denmother K9 joined us for Episode 99 (be sure to give that one a re-listen!). ⁣

⁣Since Episode 40, Worthless Handler catches us up on K9 Bolo, who was donated and trained by K9’s of Valor and Pacesetter. A few months in, K9 Bolo has saved Worthless Handler’s life, found pounds of meth, apprehended when necessary, and has absolutely proven himself. ⁣

⁣Since Episode 99, Denmother K9 retired in September 2021, and has been going through a slew of medical surgeries and cancer scares since, but is getting back into teaching courses. K9 medical, “It doesn’t happen until it does”.⁣

⁣All in all, the guys go into crazy, sobering stories about applying some techniques they have learned - and we cannot stress enough, it is important to take a class, and it can save lives. (And Eric rants about TikTok Cops, and a cop who was about to tow a marked cruiser with a K9 in it…!)⁣
