After IVF, the process isn't always over. For some, there is emotional trauma to unpack, physical pain to address, or spiritual questions to answer. For others, they struggle with the real concerns over what to do with remaining frozen embryos or how to tell their children they were conceived with donor egg/sperm. Where can you go when you need faith-informed support and healing? There haven't been many ministries focused on IVF healing until recently, with the creation of Shiloh IVF Ministry. This new ministry is focused on providing education and support for Christian and Catholic women who have been through IVF. Today, we interview one of their founders, Katie McMahon.

GUEST BIO: Katie and her husband have carried the cross of infertility for the duration of their 20 year marriage.  They currently have 3 living children, as well as 10 others who died in the process of in vitro fertilization.  After a deepening of faith and a conversion of thought in regards to IVF, Katie has written a few blog entries for the Catholic infertility ministry, Springs in the Desert.  She currently volunteers as a mentor for those carrying the cross of infertility with the Sisters of Hannah mentorship program through The Fruitful Hollow Catholic Infertility Resource.  She has co-founded and now hopes to offer healing, accompaniment, and discernment expertise to others who have participated in IVF through Shiloh IVF Ministry.

Lindsey and Dan felt sick at how they and their bodies were treated during their struggle with infertility. They felt they were being sold hope that couldn't be promised, by doctors who told them they had no answers. The entire journey didn't sit right with them, so they went looking for other avenues. Along the journey, they discovered an approach to fertility that was natural, cooperative, faithful, and left them feeling peaceful. Dan works as an appeals attorney and law professor. Lindsey has a background in theology from Duke Divinity School, focusing on Patristics and disability theology. They have two daughters, but faced infertility for three years before their first child was born. Through the journey of infertility, they began to explore her menstrual health and fertility more deeply, and ultimately, they started using the Creighton Method.

Have you heard of Theology of the Body? In today's episode, we're welcoming guest, Jen Settle, who works as the Director of Ongoing Formation at the Theology of the Body Institute. She gives a great introduction to "TOB" and we discuss understanding the human identity, the impact of TOB on women, the gift of femininity and motherhood, and even how it relates to our understanding of sexual ethics and natural family planning! Although this episode is just the tip of the iceberg, it's a great introduction to this great and impactful work.

Jen Settle has been a staff member at the Theology of the Body Institute in Quarryville, Pennsylvania since 2008, where she currently serves as the Director of Ongoing Formation. She has Bachelor and Master’s degrees in theology and Parish Ministry from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Jen worked in religious education and adult faith formation for 15 years before joining the TOBI staff, teaching Theology of the Body throughout the country. She completed the Spiritual Direction Certificate Program with Divine Mercy University in 2020 and she now serves as a spiritual director. She is the co-author of the book, Consecration to Jesus through Saint Joseph: An Integrated Look at the Holy Family, and a contributor to the books, Undone: Freeing the Feminine Heart from the Knots of Fear and Shame, and God is Beauty: A Retreat on the Gospel and Art.

Your thyroid controls much of what happens in your body, including the health of your reproductive system. Healthy pregnancies require healthy thyroid functioning. But general thyroid labs are often limited and too general. We speak with functional medicine and NaProTechnology trained family nurse practitioner, Amanda Frederick, about how to identify, diagnose, and treat thyroid issues that could cause pregnancy loss. Prior to working in Tennessee, Amanda served as a primary care provider at a prominent holistic medical practice in the St. Louis metropolitan area for nearly a decade where she became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and Certified Fertility Care Nurse Practitioner (CFCNP) practicing NaPro Technology.
