Our friend Phuc Luu wrote one of our favorite books this year, Jesus From the East. In this episode, he shares his thinking about how the gospel is not only for sinners but also for the sinned-against. Using the Korean concept of han, Phuc shows us how we lead best when we lead in ways that are not just transactional but deeply human, actively caring for the wounded and vulnerable.

Born in Vietnam and raised in Houston, Texas, Phuc Luu seeks the integration and intersection of art, philosophy, and theology. His work has appeared in the AmerAsian JournalThe Journal of Pastoral Care, the Truett Journal of Church and Mission, the Houston Chronicle, and NPR’s This I Believe. He has published on a variety topics such as Medieval philosophy, pastoral care, theology and culture, philosophy of religion, and art and culture. He carries advance degrees in theology (Baylor) and philosophy (the University of St. Thomas). He has served on the Nobel Peace Prize Committee for the American Friends Service Committee (Quakers) for seven years as a member. He has taught philosophy and theology at Sam Houston State University and Houston Baptist University. He currently teaches Old Testament prophets and New Testament gospels at Houston’s Episcopal High School, and is working on his second book, a sequal to Jesus of the East
