  • Cody Hawkins: playing QB, coaching & following football around the globe
Cody Hawkins was born into football. His father, Coach Dan Hawkins, has been coaching for the majority of his life. But while coaching football is Cody’s profession is does not define him. The current UC Davis wide receivers coach joined The Yogi Roth and shared his experiences playing at Colorado under his Dad, being a player-coach in various leagues around the globe & his ‘why.’

He takes you inside the Colorado program and his own mind when he was a student-athlete, as his Dad was fired by the Buffaloes during Cody’s senior season and the game after Dan was let go Cody would be named Big-12 Offensive Player of the Week. Yogi had the opportunity to broadcast that game on Fox and shares his lens on that afternoon in Boulder.

Furthermore, Cody also has the travel bug, and once his career in college ended he found that football is widespread around the globe and started leading football clinics that would impact others in unimaginable ways.

He described the power of travel and related it to the human experience being about seeking joy and finding oneness within the human race through football. International football gave Cody the opportunity to make a positive impact on people and encourage them to build lasting and meaningful relationships through the game, which truly epitomizes one of Yogi’s favorite sayings ‘How Great is Ball.’

  • Adam Amin: broadcasting college football with Empathy
Adam Amin is known as one of the top broadcasters in sports and joins The Yogi Roth Show to share his story. Adam joined ESPN at the young age of 24 and has called major college football, basketball, NBA, NFL games and more during his career.

While host Yogi Roth and Adam dive into the details of his professional journey the essence of their conversation is around humanity, as Adam has seen it first hand being the only member of his immediate family to be born in the United States.

Adam, whose family was born and raised in Pakistan, defined being human as always wanting to evolve and be better and to appreciate others for the same reasons that you would want to be appreciated. He shared that his favorite word in the English language is ‘empathy’ and said that the most human thing you can do is be empathetic to those around you—even if there may be underlying differences in philosophy or mentality.

When one learns of Adam’s father, Mohammed, it makes sense that Adam views life this way. Mohammed moved to the USA in 1978 with the sole goal of creating a life that his wife and sons could join. In 1985, Adams family would join Mohammed and in 1986, Adam was born.

Adam also had some incredible insights to share about broadcasting in this currently political climate. He stressed the importance of having perspective in a social media heightened era, and how it is critical for him to use his platform in a thoughtful, educated, respectful, impactful and nuanced way to best serve his audience.

For Adam, it all comes down to appreciation and empathy.

  • Bruce Feldman: the ‘why’ behind college football’s most respected journalist
Bruce Feldman is an award winning author, college football personality and one of the most respected members of the media. He joined The Yogi Roth Show and shared the ‘why’ behind the path he chose, how he has always followed his heart and how ‘it all comes down to the work.’

Bruce was an art major in college and has since altered his career path to become what I consider to be one of the greatest college football writers of all time. Bruce’s path began in upstate New York and his life journey has led him to work at ESPN, become a New York Times best selling author, a highly regarded author with The Athletic and a Fox Sports college football sideline reporter. His knack for storytelling has allowed him to gain the recognition he deserves for seeking out the stories that should be told. Bruce is relentless in his search to cultivate meaningful stories that not only offer people new perspectives, but often connect to the humanity in college football.

When I asked Bruce what “it all comes down to” for him, he immediately answered saying “it all comes down to the work” because if you are failing to prepare, you’re preparing to fail. He is clearly passionate about what he writes and the insights he shares with his community.

  • Trent Dilfer: How Grit & Imagination led him to the NFL & the ‘Why’ behind being the Elite 11 Head Coach.
Trent Dilfer--a 14-year NFL veteran, Super Bowl winning quarterback and current head coach at the Elite 11--is the most recent guest on this week’s podcast episode of The Yogi Roth Show. Someone I consider family, this was a conversation I have been thinking about since we launched this podcast almost three years ago. Our conversation goes into depth unpacking Trent’s path, his passions, and how football continues to impact his life’s journey.

In this podcast, Trent reminisces over the time when he first fell in love with the game of football. He said that by the age of 10 his love affair with the game had began, which only continued to grow as he recognized and appreciated the complexities of the game and team camaraderie that came with it. Trent, who lives with a Growth Mindset, has also dedicated this phase of his life to impacting young men in grassroots football through the Elite 11 quarterback camp. There, he and his staff set out each year to guide the top quarterbacks in high school football to recognize and maximize their potential.

Trent will take you on a journey from his backyard imagining he was a professional athlete through his NFL career and now, the ‘Why’ behind his role as head coach of the Elite 11.

Listen to this podcast to hear more about how Trent is using his athletic journey to help others and the positive impact he is seeking to make the world a better place. I consider Trent to be a 1% paradigm shifter in a lot of different areas, so listen in to see how he is creating a culture to improve society and how he puts everything in perspective to encourage young athletes to become well-rounded individuals.

Tweet Trent Dilfer with any thoughts or follow up questions @DilfersDimes, and check out more podcasts by visiting www.YogiRoth.com/podcasts.

  • QB McKenzie Milton: from Hawaii to UCF & beyond, the journey of an elite QB
This week McKenzie Milton joins The Yogi Roth show to talk about his journey from a small familial town in Hawaii to a national stage in college football. Going into his senior year of high school McKenzie wasn’t highly recruited, but his passion for faith, family and football, along with an element of grit that most of us can relate to, took him to the next level. McKenzie accepted a scholarship offer to the University of Central Florida as a quarterback, and has proved that he deserves to be recognized as the elite thinker and competitor, as last year he finished 8th in Heisman Trophy voting & has continued his success.

Even though McKenzie was overlooked by his dream school and was only a 3-star recruit out of high school, he seized every opportunity to grow and excel in both life and in football, with his family being his biggest motivation. A combination of his dad coaching him throughout childhood, constantly competing with his brothers, and his mom being his #1 fan, McKenzie generated a chip on his shoulder to always strive to be his best. McKenzie talks about his small town family roots staying with him as he was able to bring that special familial bond to Orlando and create a sense of team camaraderie that as captured the college football community. That unique vibe, along with his desire to outcompete everyone he plays against has allowed McKenzie to secure his spot as one of the top QBs in the country, and remain undefeated for a season and a half.

Over the summer, I had the chance to meet McKenzie as he was a college counselor at the Elite 11 quarterback camp, so I was stoked to have this conversation and really get to know him on a deeper level. I knew that McKenzie’s work ethic and skill set were a force to be reckoned with from the moment I first saw him throw alongside college football's star quarterbacks, but getting to hear more about his story and where he came from really shows how well-rounded of a young man he has become. McKenzie goes into depth explaining how the lessons he has learned from coaches throughout the years have left a profound impact, teaching him life skills both on and off the field and keeping him grounded during his rise to fame. McKenzie also described his desire to get into coaching after his football career is over in order to be a positive influence for the next generation.

Give this conversation a listen to learn more about what drives McKenzie and his detailed ambitions.

  • Tanner Mangum: BYU QB wants others to know ‘It’s not a weakness to get help, it’s a sign of strength.’
    “It’s not a weakness to get help, it’s a sign of strength.’ ~ BYU QB/Elite 11 co-MVP Tanner Mangum

Tanner Mangum was an unknown recruit in 2011 from Eagle, Idaho and after a summer with the Elite 11—the premiere high school quarterback competition—he catapulted himself onto the map in college football, as he was named co-MVP with Jameis Winston and Neal Burcham at the 2011 Elite 11 quarterback camp. Tanner always knew that he was capable of accomplishing great things if he worked hard, but in his case, greatness didn’t always originate from football. Tanner decided to put his newfound fame and notoriety in football on hold in order to follow his faith and serve a two-year mission trip in Chile to get to the core of people, as well as himself, in order to connect with a different culture and recognize the universal humanity that we all share.

When he returned he instantly became a household name, as he threw the game winning touchdown pass for BYU as they beat Nebraska on a ‘Hail Mary’ as time expired in his first college game. While his fame on the field grew, he struggles off the field grew as well. And just like he did as a quarterback, he went to work, yet this time it was on his mental health. Then, in 2017, Tanner told the sports world that he was dealing with mild depression and anxiety. He initiated the ‘Why Not Now?’ campaign to encourage people that there is no time like the present to talk about mental health and that it's ok to ask for help.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, Tanner joins The Yogi Roth show to share his story and educate us that 1 in 5 student-athletes seek help with mental health, and those are only the statistics reported. This conversation will impact those listening; ranging from athletes, coaches, families and more to remind us all that mental health is something that must continue to be talked about, without fear of judgment.

Listen to this podcast for more insights about Tanner’s mission trip and college football career, as well as how he continues to seek a life of contentment and inner peace.

Follow Tanner’s journey on his Instagram page and be sure to watch his inspirational video sharing his story.

  • Brenda Tracy: ‘I wasn’t built to break’
Brenda Tracy is a catalyst and agent of change. She joins The Yogi Roth Show, as their conversation will take you inside the world of Brenda, as she travels to college campuses year-round, impacting college athletes to Set The Expectation.

Brenda, a survivor of a gang rape on a college campus is now inspiring and empowering student-athletes to #SetTheExpectation to end sexual and relationship violence on college campuses.

Over the last two years, thousands of high school and college student-athletes have embraced her campaign and most recently a conference has embraced her mission. Among them have been Stanford, San Jose State, Michigan, The Opening Football Camp and many more. Leading the way was Stanford Head Coach David Shaw, who dedicated the first ever college football game to bringing awareness to sexual and relationship violence on campus, and the Cardinal titled that game in 2017 the #SetTheExpectation game. In 2018, other teams have followed Stanford’s lead.

Brenda and Yogi’s powerful conversation unpacks what it means to be a “survivor,” as well as how Brenda was able to find an immense amount of strength within herself to create positivity for others. Brenda is forced to tear herself apart and relive the details of her assault every time she shares her story, but she has found comfort in knowing that by her opening up, she’s helping others get through their worst moments and preventing future assaults from happening. Her goal is to create a new societal norm that doesn’t allow for sexual assault or violence to take place, and redefine what manhood is by showing college athletes that it’s okay to be respectful to women. Listen to this extremely moving podcast and go to www.BrendaTracy.com to learn more about the woman who ‘wasn’t built to break.’

After being the #1 pick, Jared Goff became a household name. His drive to succeed has allowed him to never flinch when facing adversity, and has made him the leader that he is today. Coming from an athletic family, Jared was always encouraged to be the best that he could be and to trust his preparation.
