About mindfulness, many people have heard of this term and probably know a thing or two about it. Especially people who practice yoga regularly might be quite familiar with this term. But, most people don’t know and can not explain the history of mindfulness, like who started it, when it began, and how it became so popular even in the western countries. In this episode, we invited Tanimoto Takuro to Yoga Off the Mat again to give us a lecture about the history of mindfulness.

In this series of yoga philosophy, we will spend some time talking about the yamas and niyamas. The yamas and niyamas originated from the very well known text “The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali.” There are 8 limbs to the yoga sutras, each describing a different aspect of the yoga practice, and by practicing from the first to the 8th, the practitioner's goal is to attain liberation.
In this episode, we are discussing the 4th yama in the eight limbs, brahmacharya.
Traditionally, the meaning of Brahmacharya was to ask yogis to conserve their sexual energy, in favor of using the energy to further progress along the yogic path. Nowadays in modern society, we have so many distractions and things other than sex that can drain our attention and energy. Brahmacharya is teaching us to try to conserve energy from things that can drain us, and use our precious energy on the things that can nourish us and the things that we find important.
