·        Yoga Therapist help clients figure out a daily routine that will help them to stay in balance and formulate a sustainable life going forward.

·        Yoga Therapists help people become more embodied, which then influences the qualities of both the body and the mind.

·        Yoga Therapy has a framework from Indian Philosophy that helps the client suffer less and experience more joy. It is very akin to Buddhist Counseling.

Today’s episode is a wonderful combination of yogic mysticism and scientific research. We are honored to speak with Dr. Krishnamurthy, the Pro Vice Chancellor, and Research Director of S-VASA University in Bangalore, Indian which offers degree programs all the way up to receiving a Ph.D. in Yoga Studies. Dr. Krishnamurthy begins the conversation by telling us some of the latest research on yoga and aging. We then move into the history of the invasions of Indian universities between the 5th and 12th Centuries and the impact that this had on the ancient knowledge of yoga and Ayurveda, as well as many other areas of study. Dr. Krishnamurthy then talks about S-VYASA University in both India as well as Los Angeles, CA and how they are educating yoga students all of the world in person and online.

Her interest in yoga, mental health and spirituality was strengthened while completing her studies at Pacifica Graduate Institute. Today’s episode is a solo episode with Amy Wheeler. Amy’s undergraduate and master’s degree are in Community Health Promotion back in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. So it is not a surprise that Amy’s connection to Yoga Therapy is so strong, as Yoga Therapy is about feeling good, showing up as your best self, and being accountable to the health behaviors that you promised yourself you would live by. The question is, how can we help ourselves and our clients create the life they desire? 

Amy talks about the following:

·        The yogic vs. biomedical model of motivation for health behavior change

·        Self-efficacy, or trusting that you can complete the tasks you promised yourself

·        Bhavana or visualization of reaching your goal

·        Sraddha or faith that you can do it, especially in the early phases when we don’t yet see results

In today’s episode, Amy chats with Neil Pearson, Neil is a physiotherapist, yoga therapist, and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia. He is the Co-Director of Pain Care Aware and creator of the Pain Care Yoga training programs for health professionals and yoga therapists.

Neil is the founding Chair of the Physiotherapy Pain Science Division in Canada, recipient of the Canadian Pain Society's Excellence in Interprofessional Pain Education award, and faculty in four yoga therapist training programs. He is the Lead Contributor of Pain BC’s Pain Foundations and Gentle Movement/Relaxation Series, and author of Understand Pain Live Well Again, and Yoga Therapy (chapter) in Thompson and Brooks, Integrative Pain Management 2016. Neil and Shelly Prosko are co-editors of Yoga and Science in Pain Care: Treating the Person in Pain, along with Marlysa Sullivan.
