Let's be honest, DC superhero movies have not been doing well at the box office lately. Batman vs Superman and Justice League both under-performed in ticket sales (although I believe both are good movies). There has been rumors that DC would be scaling back their movie production due to these shortcomings in sales. It seemed like the pivotal decision point was going to be the success or failure of Aquaman.

This put a lot of pressure on Aquaman to save the DCEU movies. By all accounts of Aquaman's opening overseas, it was gonna be a hit for DC. Thanks to Alamo Drafthouse in El Paso, we were able to watch the early screening of Aquaman with a theater full of eager superhero fans (albeit some confessed to really just wanting to see Jason Momoa shirtless).

The cast was full of recognizable actors such as Nicole Kidman, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Graham McTavish, and Dolph Lundgren as well as the headliner, Jason Momoa. The graphics were exceptionally well done. The underwater scenes, and there were a lot of them, didn't detract from the story. The plot wasn't anything groundbreaking, but it served the purpose of telling Aquaman's story.

If you are a comic book purist you will notice there are some changes sprinkled into the story. The biggest change for me, and I have said this since Justice League, is the characterization of Aquaman. The way Arthur Curry is portayed in the comics is quite a bit different from the movie version. I'm not just talking about the visual presentation, but his overall demeanor. I have been a critic of Jason Momoa's acting before, but I think it is his general likability that allowed him to pull this role off. I am a long time comic book reader and am very used to characters being changed over time. I am okay with this portrayal of Aquaman. The other changes to characters were really very minor and nitpicky. I won't mention them here, but you can check the character bios on the DC wiki and see what those changes are.

Patrick and I both place Aquaman right behind Wonder Woman in our list of best DC Comics movies. I give it a very high 9.5, but Patrick gives it a 7 mostly due to lengthy battle scenes. The audience members we talked to both on and off camera overwhelmingly liked the movie. Aquaman is a safe bet for you to spend your ticket money on.

***Spoilers may follow ***

Maybe it was just me, but I noticed 3 scenes that reminded me of other movies. First was when Aquaman and Mera escaped the trench monsters and got to the Hidden Sea. That whole scene really was nostalgic of your first view of Jurassic Park back in the day. The Second was when Atlanna removed the trench monster armor. That made me think about the scene in How to Train Your Dragon 2 when Hiccup saw the Dragon Rider remove her outfit and it was his mom. The last and most obvious to me was the monster, Karathen. That monster looks like it came straight outta central casting for Pacific Rim.

*** End of possible spoilers ***

What part of Aquaman was your favorite? Do you think the DCEU movie franchise has been saved by Aquaman? Let us know in the comments.

I'll be honest, when Netflix solicited a new Sabrina the Teenage Witch series I immediately thought of the old humorous TV series. I watched the old TV series from time to time if nothing else was on TV. I mostly watched to catch the Penn Jillette cameos.

Then one rare Friday night when I had completely caught up on my DVR backlog, I started looking through the endless streaming channels looking for something interesting to watch. I tend to start on Netflix and work my way through the other services until I find a decent enough show to keep my attention.

Netflix had just recently released the full season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as evidenced by a big banner proclaiming the fact on their main page. I decided to give it a try for an episode or two to see if it was good enough to binge the season.

Hoo boy! What they produced is worlds apart from the old TV series. That is a good thing though. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a much more dark and serious take on the characters. There is a lot of occult and supernatural stuff in the Netflix Sabrina. I am really enjoying the way they are giving depth to each character. I am particularly intrigued by Ambrose as his back story is very interesting.

If you like supernatural and occult type shows, you will be pleasantly surprised at how well they deal with these topics in Sabrina. If you haven't marathon binged this show yet, you are truly missing out.

Let us know who your favorite Sabrina character is in the comments below. We'd love to hear from you.

We have been anticipating Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse ever since the first trailer hit the internet. The comic book inspired animation along with the choice of having Miles Morales as the lead character was 2 great decisions.

Miles Morales has been a favorite of comic book readers since he was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sarah Pichelli. His following outside the comic book pages has been small. Hopefully this movie will help to bring him into the public's eye. His origin story is roughly parallel to the Spider-men/Spider-women of other dimensions… They get bitten by a radioactive spider and gain powers. Their powers are mostly the same, except Miles also has the ability to camouflage himself in his environment and he has a venom strike that can paralyze most people with just a touch.

The villains in this movie aside from Kingpin don't get mentioned much. They are used as stereotypical bad guys, but they are some of the bigger names in the Spider-man rogues gallery.

There are some great easter eggs hidden throughout the movie. Pay close attention to the names in Mile's cell phone contact list. You'll also want to stay around for the after credits to get a glimpse at another lesser known Spider-man variant, Spider-man 2099.

We really like Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse. The audience overwhelmingly agreed with us. Sony has finally made a Spider-man movie that rivals the Marvel movies. Sony may have found their niche in animation.

Let us know what you thought about the movie in the comments. What was your favorite alternate dimension Spider-man?

There have been a lot of "live action" remakes of popular Disney titles lately... and there are plenty scheduled to come out soon.  The connotation of live action makes you believe all the roles are played by real, live, human actors.  Most people will even accept it as live action when at least some of the characters are portrayed by living people with some CGI characters sprinkled in.  The uproar/pushback from the audience in response the the Lion King "live action" adaption has been pretty strong.

The new Lion King movie is billing itself as "live action".  Everything that has been seen in the trailer(s) appears to have been rendered CGI.  Even the backgrounds/sets look to be CGI.  If the entire movie is created using computer graphics, can you really say it is live action?  Don't get me wrong, the graphics in the trailer look amazing, but I think it is disingenuous to label it as live action.

All the hub-bub over the "live action" label is taking away from the movie as a whole.  As I mentioned, the graphics look top notch.  The voice cast is truly star-studded.  We only really get to see Simba's birth scene.  I only hope it is not a scene for scene recreation of the Lion King animated movie.  I've already seen that movie.  I like the small changes they made to Jungle Book's "live action" movie.  I am hoping they do the same for this movie.

I am really looking forward to seeing Timon & Pumba.  What scene from the animated movie do you want to see in the "live action" remake? Let us know in the comments.
