英语中很多单词是可以直译的，比如 mooncake 月饼，但如果你把母校翻译为 mother school 的话，外国人会笑话你英文不地道。

母校 ≠ mother school

母校 

alma mater  [ˈælmə ˈmɑːtə(r)] 

mother shool 是中式英语，英语中描述母校的地道表达是 alma mater 。

 来源是拉丁词，在希腊神话中，特指谷物女神。字面意思是" mother who fosters or nourishes "代养、抚育或滋养、养育（婴儿）的母亲”。

例：

He returned to his alma mater to coach the basketball team.

他回到母校去当篮球教练。

我们经常把 native speaker 称为母语者，native language 就是母语的意思。

与母语这个中文意思相似的英语表达是 mother tongue，下次再看到它可别以为是妈妈的舌头 。

例：

A: What's his mother tongue?
他的母语是什么？
B: I think it's Greek.
我想是希腊语。

祖国是 motherland 还是 fatherland ?

就像上文的 mother tongue一样，英语中有很多性别词汇，它们表示相似的意思，但在内在涵义上各有偏向。

motherland和 fatherland 一样，都有祖国的意思。motherland 代表祖国，内涵主要是自然属性，把大自然比作母亲。

fatherland 代表祖国，内涵主要是社会属性，把国家形象父亲化，包含浓厚民族认同感和爱国情怀。

由于 fatherland 和 motherland 都带有较强的感情因素，在正式场合中，更多使用 homeland，含义也更加中性化。

例：

He expressed the earnest love to his motherland.

他对他的祖国充满了真挚的爱。

They were willing to serve the fatherland in its hour of need.

他们愿意在祖国需要的时候为她效力。

Firstly, you must be loyal to your homeland.

常见 mother 英语俚语
