100 Words Or Less: The Podcast

This week I have one of my favorite bass players around, Sergio Vega from Quicksand. He's an incredibly open and honest dude that has created some of the best tones in the game. We get into his musical upbringing, NYHC and the post-hardcore scene of the early 90's. We also chat about his time playing with Deftones and more!

We are here! 500 episodes and still trucking. I am so pleased to bring you this discussion with a gem of a human being and a formative figure to mine (and many others) upbringing within punk/hardcore, Milo Auckerman from Descendents. We discuss science, ego and of course the optimal amount of coffee to drink in a day. We also peel back the story of how they ended up in the cult classic film, "Pump Up The Volume" with Christian Slater. Thanks to all listening and supporting! This podcast has changed my life and I am so appreciative of it. Viva DIY music!

I am so stoked to bring you this discussion with Tomas Lijedahl from Norna and Breach. If you are a fan of anything heavy that resembles Isis, Neurosis and the like, you absolutely have to listen to Tomas' new band, Norna as well as his previous band called Breach. We talk in depth about the Swedish hardcore scene, skate punk and disfunction. He's an open book and I was thankful to be able to have this chat.

If Patrick and his band don't bring you a smile, I don't know what to do to help you but I have faith in you. I brought Patrick on the show to discuss his south OC upbringing, ska zines and how Limbeck sat squarely at the intersection of being "too punk for country and too country for punk". He also tells us of some wild advertising stories that he and his friends participated in. Listen and enjoy!

Boy oh boy do I love Dying Wish and in turn, I had to have Emma Boster the vocalist of said band on the pod ASAP. We accomplished that and discussed how sick Portland is, the art of booking shows and how important MySpace-core was for music tastes of the early 2000's. Emma was a great hang and enjoy our discussion!

Jason Black plays in the legendary punk/pump your fist in the air band, Hot Water Music. They just released their new full length on Equal Vision Records entitled "Feel The Void" that is well...incredible. Jason opens up about the band attempting to "fit in" at certain points of their career, his relationship with touring and being in a working class band. Listen and enjoy!

Chain Of Strength. What a band and I have the pleasure of bringing on Ryan Hoffman who played guitar in the band (and Circle Storm!) to discuss all things Chain of Strength as well as his incredible label called Quiet Panic Records. We also discuss how he stays engaged and passionate about hardcore/punk all these years later. Enjoy!

Post rock. Relapse. NASCAR? All of these things are covered in today's pod with the dude, Bobby Markos from Cloakroom. I love this band's blend of Hum, meets stoner rock meets Isis. It's got it all and I was happy to pick Bobby's brain on their origins, how sick his old band Native was and he explains to me the allure of NASCAR for him and his work with the legendary race car driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.

What is it like to run a record store? Has that been a question you have asked yourself? How about a small business? The answer to these questions and more I had my good bud and friend of the show Joey Cahill from Wanna Hear It Records on to discuss his first year of being in business, some important learnings and why classic rock SELLS.

Back in the saddle this week with my long time friend and incredible human being, Marco Walzel. He's the owner and operator of the highly respected (and successful) booking agency, Avocado Booking who has booked tours for years for bands like Comeback Kid, Parkway Drive, August Burns Red and so much more...plus, he's a hardcore kid! We discuss his time singing for a band called My Hero Died Today that made some waves, growing up in Germany and the difference in touring through Europe vs the US. Get to know Marco and listen in!
