  • THE LAST FIGHT IN THE COLISEUM

"the Last Fight In The Coliseum" by Charlotte Yonge -The year is 404 -A.D. Rome is changing under the new direction of Christian emperors. The Roman Coliseum is still home to 86,000 spectators all demanding entertainment, and all very conditioned to spectacles of death and bloodshed. All that is about to come to an end. Charlotte Mary Yonge (1823-1901) was a prolific English writer known for the quality of her output. She started to publish in 1848 and managed to produce 160 different works, mostly novels. Much of her work was in children's literature. This show provides an introduction to our new show, 1001 Classic Short Stories & Tales, which will feature mostly short stories from classic writers such as Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Louisa May Alcott, and many more. • THE HUNT FOR THE REAL MOBY DICK (remastered)

"The Hunt For the Real Moby Dick" -In 1839 journalist Jeremiah Reynolds, writing for the New York Knickerbocker Magazine, caught up with the whaling ship "Penguin" off the coast of Chili, and interviewed the first mate, getting the eyewitness account of the hunt for and capture of the whale known as 'Mocha Dick", a 90 foot white whale that had been responsible for attacking and sinking the whaling ship "Essex" , the story of which has been recently released as a Ron Howard movie. Reynolds spends the first 16 minutes of this story introducing us to the island of Mocha, off the coast of Chili, in prime whaling waters, as well as the captain and first mate of the whaling ship Penguin. The First Mate, having recently gained notoriety as the man responsible for finally catching the killer white whale, picks up the story around 16:00, and thats where the action begins- so hang on to your seat for this eyewitness account. Whales are thankfully protected today and are no longer needed to keep the lights in the cities of Paris and New York burning, or the mills and factories running. But in the 1800's many a young lad was drawn to the ports of Gloucester and New London for a chance at adventure. Many never returned. WARNING: THIS AUDIO DEPICTS THE KILLING OF A WHALE. NOT FOR THE FEINT HEARTED OR VERY YOUNG.

  • "UNSINKABLE" MOLLY BROWN

"Unsinkable Molly Brown- A Rags To Riches Story of a Titanic Survivor"-Born Margaret Tobin Brown to poor Irish immigrants in Hannibal Missouri in 1867, "Maggie" Brown worked stripping tobacco leaves to support her family until the age of 18, when she moved with her sister to Leadville, Colorado to help establish a blacksmith shop. There she met James Joseph (J.J.) Brown, a miner who was also a son of Irish immigrants. Brown strucj it rich when he figured a way to extract silver from the mine's leavings and soon became one of the wealthiest men in the country. They moved to Denver and built a mansion, complete with all the trappings, but when Maggie went through all the motions required to claim her place in society, Denver wanted no part of this nouveau rich, or so the story goes. Determined to correct her lack of education and polish, she read all the best books, hired tutors, and toured Europe several times, becoming proficient in several languages, establishing a reputation as a witty raconteur, and becoming friends with the Vanderbilts, Whitneys, and Astors, whom she met on her tours. It was on one such tour, headed home to Denver wit loads of crates filled with valuables intended for the Denver Museum, that Maggie boarded the Titanic on her maiden voyage from Cherbourg to New York. Fate intervened, and the Titanic sunk after hitting an iceburg, killing more than one thousand persons, and Maggie, through her bravery and efforts to help the survivors, was to become a national symbol. In subsequent years, through her efforts, she became a tireless advocate for those in need, from the battlefields of France to Women's Suffrage movements in America. A stageplay and movie were created in the name that she had never actually used- "Molly" Brown. • SNOWSHOE THOMPSON: THE LEGEND OF THE HIGH SIERRAS

"The Legend of Snowshoe Thompson" is one of the most enduring tales of the American West. A Norwegian immigrant, Thompson tried his hand at gold mining during the gold rush in California and Nevada but when he married, he went to work delivering mail through the snowed in passes of the Sierra Mountains of Eastern California and Western Nevada, fashioning "snowshoes" mounted on long pieces of oak, and becoming an expert at cross country and downhill skiing. For twenty years he brought desperately needed food, and supplies to stranded towns, sometimes saving lives in the process. His story and the perils he faced are the stuff of legend.

  • THE SILENT WITNESS AT APPOMATTOX

"The Silent Witness at Appomattox"- This episode tells the little known story of the McLean family's unwilling participation at both ends of the Civil War, beginning with their Northern Virginia farmhouse being bombarded at the Battle of Bull Run in 1861, prompting them to move. They choose to move to safer climes 120 miles south in the quiet village of Appomattox Courthouse, where one of the last battles of the Civil War takes place, and where their house, by pure coincidence, is used as the site for the signing of the surrender. The youngest child in the family, Lula McClean, has a little rag doll which her mother made for her, and the rag doll. left in the parlor, becomes a witness to and an unwilling participant in the surrender and subsequent ransacking of the home's parlor by the Union officers in their post meeting hunt for memorabilia. It is a sad reminder that the losses of the Civil War extended beyond battles and generals to children as well.
