This true story, often called "The War in Athens, Tennessee", describes the actions of the citizens of a small town, in this case mostly GI's recently returned from the battlefields of WWII, as they armed themselves to insure a fair election against a heavily armed and provenly corrupt town police force and political party which had gone as far as the murder of innocent civilians to insure their power. We at this podcast, by telling this story, want to make it clear that we do not condone violence in any way, shape, or form, as a means to achieve political change. You are left to decide who the heroes are in this story, and you have the obligation in this country to get involved in local, state, and government politics, and do your best to support candidates who are level-headed, moral, and seek a fair outcome for all the people. A letter from Eleanor Roosevelt to the town of Athens is included in our audio at the end of our story. Timeline: The Daily Post Athenian The Battle of Athens, Lone Seiber, American Heritage Magazine 1990 Interview with Bill White, Kurt Pheiler & Brandi Wilson, Veterans Oral History project, University of Tennessee (2000) Eleanor Roosevelt's letter to Athens (1946)

This short story comes from our Mysteries file and is a chilling short story from classic American author Edgar Allen Poe. Poe is considered one of the greatest horror story writers and as the only author that has a professional football team named after one of his works (The Baltimore Ravens). This story is not intended for children or the feint hearted. Edgar Allen Poe died a very mysterious and untimely death- for more of this story go to our past episode "THE MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF EDGAR ALLEN POE". Normally we add classic authors episodes to our new show "1001 Classic Short Stories and Tales" (www.storytellerfam.libsyn.com) but due to the nature of this short story we did not want to place it in the Kids & Family section where 1001 Classic Short Stories & Tales now resides.

It is the kind of story you expect to find in the movies- but this one is taking place in real life. When 21 year-old American soldier Norwood Thomas met 17 year-old Joyce Durrant on the banks of the River Thames in London a few weeks before the JUne 6, 1944 D-Day Invasion, neither had any idea they would be reunited by a Skype conversation 71 years later. Norwood was attached to the 101st Airborne division, an elite group of paratroopers whose mission it was to make a jump behind German lines during the Invasion of Normandy, not knowing if the Allies would be able to break through the German's strong coastal defenses or not. Prior to the mission, training in England, he met Joyce Durrant. The winds of war were to separate the two, each of whom married and raised a family, she in Australia, and he in Virginia. Fate wasn't finished with them yet, however, and an old love was about to be given a second chance. This story isn't finished--you can follow by searching "Norwood Thomas + Joyce Morris" + "update"- to see how they are getting along. "Blood Brothers: The True Story That Inspired the John Wayne Movie "The Sons of Katie Elder". On the evening of January 19th, 1889, two wagons and a buggy slowly crossed Dry Creek, two miles east of Graham, Texas. The lead wagon held six prisoners, four of them being the Marlow Brothers, chained together in pairs by manacles attached to their ankles, and a guard named Phlete Martin. The second wagon carried Deputy U.S.Marshall Edward Johnson, three guards, plus spare weapons and ammunition, while four more guards followed behind, two in a buggy, and two on horseback. Suddenly, from the darkness, came s shout saying "Hold Up!", and guard Phlete Martin shouted "Here they are, take all six of the sons of _itches". A wild gunfight followed that left five men dead, an act that was only a part of a long series of tragic events that included misinformation, wrongful persecution, mob attacks, lawsuits, killing, a famous Texas Ranger, a Colorado lawman, and the U,S. Supreme Court. The Marlow Brothers were innocent. A lot of people wanted them dead. Their story inspired the 1965 western "The Sons of Katie Elder", starring John Wayne, which rendered a version in total much different than the real story, which was much more dramatic. Credits: Jim Pettingill "The Marlow Brothers-Their Texas Ordeal and Their Lives in Colorado" The Fighting Marlows-The Men Who Wouldn't be Lynched, Glenn Shirley A Story of Frontier Life of Early Days, William Rathmell

"The Miracle of the Sun and the 3 Secrets of Fatima"- We originally did this story about a year ago, and just came back to it recently knowing that there was more to tell...actually a story within a story, and one that needs telling, in light of the challenges the world and the Catholic Church are facing. The story of The Miracle of The Sun, which is probably the most witnessed religious miracle in history, involves three shepherd children in Portugal who witnessed a series of heavenly apparitions, climaxing in an event witnessed by tens of thousands. The story within is an account of the Three Secrets- prophecies given to the children on July 13, 1917, by an apparition they believed was the Virgin Mary. These prophecies, which contained a vision of hell, the end of world war I and beginning of world war II, and a third that predicted the persecution of Christians and the killing of the Pope. The Third Secret, by the request of a child named Lucia, who was the oldest of the three, was not released by the Catholic Church until the year 2000, causing a stir of controversy that still exists today, as there were some within the Church that have said that what the Church released was not at all what Lucia had written.
