Dr. Shaun Fletcher is an Assistant Professor of Public Relations and Sport Communication at San José State University in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
He also serves on the Advisory Board for The Institute for the Study of Sport, Society and Social Change at SJSU, as well as the board chair member on Diversity and Inclusion for the Public Relations Society of America - Silicon Valley.
Prior to joining San José State, Shaun served as the Manager of Internal Communications at Apple for the Retail Learning and Development organization. In this role, he provided overall strategic communications and marketing plan development, connecting the departments mission to its 65,000+ retail employees globally.
Dr. Fletcher concurrently served as a consultant and mentor to Apple’s multimillion dollar partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, bringing students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to Apple for an immersive apprenticeship experience.
He also spent several years leading internal communications for Volkswagen Group of America and also established a professional development consultancy, where he works to train and develop current and aspiring leaders for culturally competent and gratifying service.
In the aftermath of a widely acclaimed and thought provoking TEDx Talk on mental health in the Black community, Dr. Fletcher has been a regular keynote speaker and advocate for shifting the perception of mental health in communities of color, being featured in the New York Times, Washington Post and Black Enterprise.
Dr. Fletcher earned his Doctorate in Intercultural Communication from Howard University, a Master of Arts in Interpersonal Communication from the University of Central Florida, and a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations from San José State University.
In this episode, we discuss the importance of normalizing conversations on mental health, more on Black mental health, taking care of all aspects of one's health (emotional, physical, mental), self-compassion, social change, and more.
