248: Addressing One's Privileges & Unconscious Motives - with Dr. Justin S. Hopkins, Clinical Psychologist & Founder of Hopkins Behavioral Health

Listen Later

Dr. Justin S. Hopkins is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalytic scholar in Washington, DC. He is the owner and founder of Hopkins Behavioral Health, a BIPOC-focused therapy practice that specializes in psychoanalytic therapy for adults and couples. This form of therapy addresses the unconscious motives and conflicts that interrupt the joys of life. Dr. Hopkins is a sought-after speaker on race and trauma. His insightful and thought-provoking delivery has inspired change in numerous non-profit organizations, universities, and international law firms.

He developed an expertise in trauma while training at the Hampton, Virginia and Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Hospitals. He further has advanced training in posttraumatic stress disorder, trauma-focused therapies, and the effects of trauma on personality. As a staff psychologist at Georgetown University Law Center, Dr. Hopkins delivered lectures on secondary trauma and trauma-informed practices to law clinics that offered pro-bono services to families in need.

Currently, he provides trauma-informed consultation to several employee resource groups at AM100 Law Firms, a Fortune 500 company, and a Social Justice Lobbying Group. In 2023 Dr. Hopkins was an advisor to the National Trust for Historic Preservation to support their advocacy for the Emmett Till and Mamie Till Mobley National Monument. Applying the psychology of trauma to the historical context of race, Dr. Hopkins outlined the pivotal role of historic preservation in healing our nation’s wounds. Dr. Hopkins is committed to addressing the hurt that undergirds our social ills. He blends his clinical expertise with a passion for humanity, to advise and advocate for social change.

In this episode, we explore the topics of decolonizing therapy, white fragility, breaking cycles in one's family, understanding our unconscious motives, holding trauma in our bodies, acknowledging our privileges and roles in each system, and more.
