On October 11, 2018, Hanover County Fire-EMS experienced the tragic LODD of Lt. Brad Clark.

Over the past 2 and a half years since Brad’s death, Melanie has made it her life’s mission to carry on his legacy.  She has left a career in dental administration behind to focus on highway safety awareness within the fire service, to change and enhance move over laws in Virginia and to raise awareness about the move over laws to its citizens and visitors.

She has gone from someone who would be described as quiet, especially compared to her VERY outspoken husband, to someone who cannot be silenced.
On any given day, you can find Melanie at the Virginia State House meeting with lawmakers in the House of Delegates and Senate, speaking in front of a group of public safety professionals at conference’s to include FDIC international, Texas Fire Chiefs, Drive Smart Virginia, Virginia Occupational Safety and Health annual conference to include a few.

She also works closely with the Tunnel To Towers Foundation, who came to her aid in the early days after Brad’s death.

Recently she launched a Move Over Va Facebook page that highlights the service of a firefighter, police officer, or tow truck operator weekly for Move Over Monday, to remind motorists the importance of Moving Over for all emergency personnel who work our dangerous roadways daily.

She has transformed herself, while simultaneously grieving the loss of her soulmate, rising to the challenge and clearly seeing God’s vision for her to press forward.

I get to sit down with PVD himself! Well, we were on zoom..anyway. We talk about his life as a Chicago firefighter and his progressions through the ranks. He discusses the strike that CFD had and how it affected his hiring. His time as training chief and a lot more. He is a fantastic guy and LOVES sharing his knowledge. I think thats what makes him so good and being the ISFSI President!

My first podcast in person! I am very fortunate to be part of the ISFSI  Instructor cadre for the 1403: live fire fixed facility and the new Basement fire class. While we all were in Denver at West Metro Fire kicking off the first class, I got to sit down with Seth Barker, Forest Reeder, Kevin Milan, Brian Zaitz, Gilbert Pedroza,  Brian Kazmierzak , Brad French, Tony Carroll, and Pete Van Dorpe. We discuss the new Basement Fire Class and it's importance in the fire service and the science behind it.  I think it is important to note that we were all vaccinated and had no signs or symptoms before or after podcast.

Today I get to talk to Battalion Chief Tony Carroll of  D.C. Fire. We talk about the ISFSI, special background checks for some of their personnel, what its like being a firefighter responding to the Capitol and White House. We also talk about the Capitol riots and how his department dealt with that. He speaks candidly about his close call when he fell down a elevator shaft in a fire.

February is a hard month for Lexington Fire Department. It is the month the LFD lost 2 firefighters, Chuck Williams was killed on February 17, 1997 and Brenda was killed on February 13, 2004. I wanted to honor their memory by talking with some of their friends and telling some stories. I talk with Retired Battalion Chief Brian Wainscott and Retired Captain Jeff Garris. The subject matter may seem heavy but we had a blast talking about all the things that made them who they are and a few hilarious pranks. They are gone but NEVER forgotten!
