🎙️ Welcome back to "420 Reasons Why I Quit Drinking Alcohol"! Today, brace yourselves for a raw, honest tale that unfolds in the college whirlwind of the 80s.
Remember those times when hanging out with parents didn't exactly scream 'cool'? Yeah, been there. In college, my folks weren't the partying type. Rarely sipped on a Manhattan or So Co Old Fashion—hardly the life of the kegger, right?
So, I'd skip hanging with them and head over to our neighbors'—my best friend's wild aunts and grandma. These ladies knew how to kickstart a cocktail hour any time. Booze? Check. Oh, and one of them was a fan of the green, too. They were the epitome of 'Let's party!' and my reckless goal was always to join the 'good times' brigade.
But fast-forward to now, watching friends push booze onto their kids, even before it's legal—yikes. Witnessing a cringe-worthy scene at a recent bash, with moms and college kids doing shots, one ending up in a mess while the rest laughed—I had to make a swift exit.
The twist? I've never spilled this to my parents. Guilt hung heavy as I'd be in town, next door, and still missed dropping by. But lately, Thanksgiving visits have been gold. I've begun cherishing those moments, especially since my 30s, when dinners with my fiancé and them became a pivotal point. It's been a revelation—a newfound grown-up relationship appreciation.
This isn't just about avoiding the 'rents; it's about embracing the value of moments spent together.
Reflecting on my journey, I've realized the importance of being mindful about alcohol's role in our lives. It's not just about us but about the legacy we're leaving for the next generation.
