In this week’s episode Eoin speaks with Katie Piazza Lesley (@katieplesley).
Katie was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 30 years ago, at the age of 8 and wants to highlight the importance of raising awareness around DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis).
12 years after her own diagnosis, Katie’s brother, Nick, was also diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, at the age of 22.
Throughout her Diabetic years, Katie experienced DKA at different times in her life, and just four years after Nick’s diagnosis, he went into DKA and died.
Since then, Katie’s mission has been to raise awareness around DKA while living with Type 1 Diabetes, to make sure people can see the signs and do what’s necessary to treat it in time.
She has also set up a fundraiser in honour of her brother, Nick, called ‘California Dreamin’, which aims to help college bound students living with Type 1 Diabetes.
