  • Why could the country run out of power?
We're going to start the show talking about power ,, because get this .. this morning, the highest-ever power use was recorded in New Zealand. According to Transpower, at its peak, electricity use was clocked at 7247 megawatts .. and mainly due to increased demand from Aucklanders. This cold snap is clearly putting demands on the grid, so much so that power companies are warning there might be an energy shortfall on Friday morning. Larry Blair is the man behind the New Zealand Energy Substack He keeps a close eye on our energy networks - and can explain how our energy systems respond to demand. He joins Jesse.

  • Could more have been done to help Virginia Giuffre?
Virginia Giuffre helped expose Jeffrey Epstein, was part of the pressure for Andrew Windsor to be stripped of his royal titles and thus became one of the world's most recognizable survivors of sexual abuse. But while Virginia Giuffre was taking on powerful men on the global stage, she was fighting a very different battle behind closed doors at home in Perth Australia. In the final months of her life, Giuffre and her husband of 22 years, Robert, accused each other of being violent. The courts denied her access to her children and, months later, died by suicide at age 41. A new podcast called Virginia from The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and WA Today investigates the private struggles that defined the end of her life. Journalist Melissa Fyfe asks whether the institutions meant to protect her, ultimately failed her. Need to Talk?
