It was great to meet and listen to the story, so far, of Angie. from a background as a runner, who reached the elite level at cross country and long distance, laid the foundation for what has been a diverse sporting journey.
Angie states "I come from a running background. Between 1996 and 2000 I ran internationally as a distance runner. Representing England in the Commonwealth Games 1998 in Kuala Lumpur. The World Half Marathon Championships in 1997 and the World Cross Country Championships where we won a team bronze medal.
I was sponsored by puma for 5 years at that time and ranked 8th in the Commonwealth over 10,000m with a time of 33.20.
I had my family and got into triathlons at around 40. I have never really trained to optimum for duathlons as I have always relied on being a PT for fitness. However, they are getting super competitive and if I want to get in the medals I need to do some proper and structured training. I have had 2 silver medals in the middle distance duathlons at Worlds. I got double bronze medals in the sprint and standard distances 4 years ago. I also got a silver getting exactly the same time as Cathy Dawson to 100th of a second. What a race that was. I have also bagged another bronze at standard distance 2 years ago. The last couple of races 4th and 6th. I have a year between now and the Worlds in Australia so time to put the training in ready.
I compete in powerlifting too. I am the World Champion in single lifts and full power and I hold the world record in my category for deadlift (full power) European records for squat in full power. "
I hope you enjoy this pod, terrific and inspiring.

Great to speak to Jeff and hear how things are done in the USA as well as his awesome story.
Jeff says:"My own background in sport goes back to early childhood. My father and his brother were American football players of note, earning university scholarships and playing briefly professionally in the NFL. I grew up playing many of the ball sports, like soccer (I know, ‘football’ to you) and baseball, and as I grew taller, basketball, and then as I filled out a bit more, American football. I played as a quarterback through my college years in the mid-80s and then had a short stint playing American football as a professional player-coach in the U.K., in a semi-pro league that just preceded the old World Football League minor league system for the NFL, for a team in the Midlands called the West Bromwich Fireballs.
I returned to the U.S. and embarked on a 30-year career in financial services with General Electric and a family with my wife of 29 years (we have two grown children, ages 26 and 22) and stayed somewhat active during that time playing basketball, and had a brief dalliance on the practice squad of the U.S. Olympic team handball team while living in Atlanta around the time of the ’96 Summer Olympics there.
It was not until I reached age 45 that I moved into endurance sports, after re-injuring a surgically reconstructed knee playing basketball, and slogged through my first sprint triathlon as a fundraiser for a chromosomal birth condition our daughter lives with. Needless to say, I caught the multisport bug – it has moved from a weekend hobby to a lifestyle - and I’ve progressed since then to do some 75+ endurance events, mainly short and middle distance triathlons, with Ironman 70.3 as my longest distance to date. I first qualified to represent Team USA in age group world championships in Aquabike in 2018 and have now raced in World Triathlon multisport events across various disciplines in Spain, Slovakia, Germany and next year plan to race in Australia … though, as Dr. Jim noted in your podcast, “the elite podium-level racers are definitely not worried about me”. I’m in it for the amazing experience of representing my country’s jersey at these events, being a good ambassador for the sport and the great camaraderie that happens with age-group cohorts from across the world. I have enormous respect for Team GB and its members.
More recently, I’ve become more involved with helping others get into the life-changing experience of endurance sports, coaching local cycling classes and serving as an active board leader of a local triathlon club in our Utah community, and have most recently served as a race guide and push/assist partner for young para-athletes.
hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.

Adrian Wilkins has been representing GB agegroup for over a decade. with a background of playing rugby and cricket from a kid well into his forties he has always been a sporty guy.
Although Adrian states his story is not particularly exciting performance terms, which we don't agree with, he certainly didn't lack in life events, especially over the last few years.
He wanted to raise the awareness of hip replacements and the effects it has on life and especially sporting capabilities after the operation.
Adrian has had both hips replaced over the last few years and has made a full recovery, on top of that he has had a heart issue and turns out long covid.
So sit back, strap yourself in and enjoy a rollercoaster of a ride.

It was great to hear from Andy Tucker who dropped us an email and said he would like to come on the pod and when we found out he was a Guinness world record holder, we couldn't wait to hear what record he had broken.
Andy didn't have any sporting background as a kid, but like many kids, spent most of his time playing football and riding his bike. As a young father he realised that he needed to get fitter to be around for his son and so a seed was planted.
Andy says "I started in 2012 with my first Triathlon, and am currently training for the Ironman Nice world champs.
I have taken a few AG wins, been to the 70.3 world champs and am racing my first GBR age group race at the European Champs in Menen on the Aquabike discipline and hoping for a good result! I am also a double Guinness world record holder for 3-legged running over 12 and 24 hours! "
Andy's partner Teresa is also a GB Agegroup athlete and it was while he was supporting her he decided that he would like to earn the blue suit, as he called it. So that's what he did.
Hope you enjoy Andy's journey as much as wee did.

Meet Douglas Wood, a Scotsman who has written a book about his renaissance into triathlon, with a background of orienteering, where he again represented and managed a GB team, as well as back ground of running and the odd dabble in and out of triathlon.
Like so many people Douglas, was running, swimming and biking already before he took up triathlon, so it seemed to be the natural next step to put them all together.
He began to focus fully on triathlon when he finally retired, in his 60s.
We talk about UAE where he has been going g out to visit his daughter over the last decade an d takin g part in triathlon s when he was out there
We discuss, although he coaches himself, he has surrounded himself with a team of people who help him continue to do triathlon both physically and mentally.
We talk about his book about triathlon in his 70s which he started in lockdown.
Douglas uses anecdotes from his triathlon exploitations from around the world and explores everything from tactics to equipment, mindset and injuries.
In sharing his story Douglas sends an inspiring message for athletes of all disciplines, that despite your age or experience, you can look ahead and keep going and enjoy sport.
He reminds us that we never stop learning and enjoyment comes from doing the best possible within your capabilities.

We are delighted to bring you our chat with Agegroup Athlete Darren Bird
Darren Says:
I’m now 42 years of age, 43 in August. I’m a serving firefighter in the London fire brigade and have been for 21+ years. I joined at the age of 21. I’m actually a 3rd generation Firefighter following in the footsteps of my father and grandfather which you would think is why I’m in the industry as it’s a family thing but it’s actually a very different reason which I will go on to explain at some point further on!
Sports participation wise, triathlon wasn’t even something I had heard of until my late 20’s and I didn’t take part in my 1st one until 2011 at the age of 31. I was always an active child, I always had lots of energy and if I didn’t exercise it out then I think I could be considered a pain in the arse which to be fair is not to dissimilar to now! I would always be out on my bike or over the park playing football after school which I know now makes me sound like one of them old moaning generation but that is how it was back then! Ride to the park, play football or tennis and get back for dinner. I started playing rugby at 6 or 7 years of age but I think then the youngest team started at under 8s or 9s so I was allowed unofficially to join in training with my brothers team but not play until I was older to start legally. There was something I really loved about rugby. I think it was the pure physicality of tackling. I was reasonably good (even if I do say so myself!) but football was always the cooler sport in my mind as that’s what all my school mates played and we would even play that after rugby whilst our parents were all chatting and having a beer in the clubhouse. I started playing football in little league on a Saturday and rugby on Sundays.
By complete chance I got a new Guvnor on my watch at work who used to race as an age grouper for GB at triathlon. She mentioned it to me a few times but I kind of palmed it off as I hadn’t swam really other than messing about on holidays since my parents used to take me to swim club as a child.
The more I raced the more I chased that buzz! I applied for a GB slot for the 1st time in 2015 and took part in the European long distance triathlon championships. I had loads of friends and family come to support me. I was so proud putting on that GB suit!
With covid and the going through a divorce and now sharing custody 50-50 off my son, racing has had to take a back seat for a while! I do really miss it and can’t wait to put on a GB suit again one day! I think the time away has probably made me hungrier! I will certainly appreciate that moment next time I’m stood on that start line absolutely shitting myself!

On Episode 77 we chat to John Armstrong, Johns quite local to me, about ten miles away, so we took the opportunity to sit down face to face and have a chat about how he became an Agegrouper for GB and race for the first time earlier this year.
John says he didn't really have much of a sporting background and it wasn't until he was forty, that he had a go at triathlon. over the years he has trained and threw his hat in to the ring at the qualification races and was successful.
John tells us about his first Agegroup experience and how he has now caught the bug and wishes to try and qualify for future events.

On this episode we speak to age grouper Matty Earles
Matty Says "Childhood, never competed in anything really BUT always has mountains of excess energy and forever active, being an 80s kid. Was wild on skateboarding but that’s about it.
Fast forward until about 25 years old and picked up ‘fun running’ and went into amateur boxing just as stress reliever, ended up being involved as coach, chairman and all sorts for around 15 years.
Got into cycling around 10-12 years ago and never looked back and duathlon was the natural progression for me. Competed in 1 x worlds and 2 x euros for GB age group with a best of 12th in CAT at the last euros.
I am now a personal trainer with Maximum Endorphins with a real focus on enhanced wellbeing over sculpting and more recently driving my mens mental health CIC after the suicide of three young male friends called @tuff2talk."

On this Episode we speak to Age-group athlete, coach, triathlon club founder and event organiser Craig Lane.
Craig tells us about his lack of interest in sport as a kid growing up, he wasn't interested in the rugby mad school he went to so he disengaged from anything sporty.
After qualifying to become a painter and decorator and building his own buisness, Craigs lifestyle had a detriment to his health. Craig lost five stone after giving up takeaways to become a a super-fit triathlete when a cancer scare changed his life.
Everything changed for Craig Lane after was diagnosed with the pre-cancerous condition Barrett’s oesophagus – which affects the cells in the oesophagus – in 2011.
This diagnosis completely changed Craigs outlook and from being the “typical lad,” he started exercising, overhauled his diet – got into triathlon qualified for Team GB.
Craig, as we will hear, has raced all over the world, he has set up his own coaching business and from not doing any sport as a kid he has made it an integral part of his life.
You can contact Craig for coaching advice with this link https://www.coachcraigtri.co.uk/
