The Iowa State Cyclones’ offense has been characterized by frustrating inconsistency this season, often failing to sustain momentum despite possessing proven Big 12 talent. As the team prepares for a pivotal late-season matchup against Kansas, immediate and aggressive tactical adjustments are necessary to unlock their unit’s full potential. The required shift is not centered on personnel, but on three core philosophical changes to the scheme.
First, the offense must commit to leaning more heavily on the successful run game. Running back Carson Hansen has proven capable of providing consistency and explosiveness, even during losing streaks. Establishing the run early and often will control the clock, create favorable down-and-distance situations, and alleviate pressure on the quarterback. Second, the Cyclones must incorporate more up-tempo play-calling and quick throws. This higher operational pace would prevent defensive conservatism from stalling drives, build offensive rhythm, and generate the sustained momentum that has been absent in recent outings.
Finally, the coaching staff should utilize fewer complex option routes, instead simplifying the passing concepts and empowering quarterback Rocco Becht to make faster, decisive reads. Becht is lauded for his clutch decision-making; trusting him to execute quick-game concepts and pre-snap checks will inject vital confidence and quicken the unit's operational pace. Implementing these three changes: committing to the run, increasing tempo, and simplifying the pass reads, will give Iowa State the necessary spark to play confidently and secure a critical victory against Kansas.
