You don't get to write the beginning of your story. But you do get to write the rest of it. And for today's guest, at the beginning of his story, you would seldom find a person who believed in an optimistic middle and end for him. But as Andy Frisella explains to the young men of Apogee on this call, no one is going to believe you until after you achieve what you're after.

THE MISSION
Many of the young people who would thrive the most at Acton Academy (a school founded by Matt Beaudreau), simply can’t afford it. The Essential 11 was created to fill that gap. Our goal is to provide scholarships to as many Acton Academy students in need as we possibly can. 100% of all proceeds from this podcast go directly towards sponsoring young heroes here in the Sacramento area. We know and believe that a greater future starts with greater education for more students.
There are two things that we have explored extensively on this show. 1. Schooling is vastly different from education- the two are not synonymous and 2. The greatest success is often found in the most unconventional ways by simply paying attention and taking action. Both are the case for today's guest, Miranda Alcaraz who, in collaboration with her husband, has built out a successful, no-nonsense fitness community that provides their community with the resources they need to take control of their fitness every single day.
MIRANDA ALCARAZ
Miranda grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. She went to school for interior design, and during this time she was also teaching spin and cardio kick-boxing classes. Graduated, and then began working at a high-end furniture and design store but found herself gravitating to the kind of community in health and fitness more. Crossfit was the first time she competed as an athlete, participating in the 2008 Crossfit games and competing until 2016.
An idea was formed during a busy time in Miranda's and now husband's life. Post the simple workouts we are doing at home or on the road – so people can follow along. Charge a fee that will allow anyone to participate. Create a community where we can push and motivate each other. The first-ever workouts were posted in November 2016 (just a few days before Miranda found out she was pregnant with their first baby boy). Memberships went up for sale the week before the New Year, and within the first month, Street Parking had grown to 700 Members.

We talk a lot about the importance of dad's being in the home- but not just the physical proximity of it- fathers actually being a present and active role in raising strong young people for the world. We've seen a massive decline of such men. Men who are of the world and the trends of the culture rather than of the traditional masculine role of responsibility and virtue. Today's guest knows what it's like being a man of the world, and he completely rejected that path in favor of a more fulfilling path. Elliott Hulse shares his experiences and wisdom with the young men of Apogee Strong in this episode.

Confidence isn't inherent. It's earned through hard work and pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone. Even if, like in the case of today's guest, it means getting punched in the face. Max Martini works in an industry known very well for its rate of rejection -- it's the name of the game in Hollywood, and confidence is a must. Not something that our guest always had. But Max did always have the desire to push himself past his limitations to see what he's capable of. And it's paid off. Today, he shares his advice with the young men of Apogee Strong.

Iron sharpens iron. Today's guest knows that in order to become an individual of sound reason, your ideas will need to be challenged. You need to have a grounded philosophy and grounded ideals based in logic that can stand up to opposition. And in today's political climate, especially within colleges, any philosophy that goes against the narrative is quick to be silenced. Bo Hines explains to the young men of Apogee just how important it is to know who you are, what you believe, and have the courage to stand up for your beliefs.

In a climate and a world today where you get celebrated for being a victim and it's a constant competition of who can have it the worst, today's guest lives his life without complaint. Not because there's nothing to complain about, but he understands that it's a waste of time. Life's not fair, no matter what the movies say. Jon Fitch learned that life lesson early on, and today he shares his experiences with the young men of Apogee.

The hometown mentality. It can either hold you back and keep you within the range of all you've ever known, or you can take a look around and decide you're meant for more. The latter is the case for today's guest, Derek Woodske. Derek has overcome tremendous challenges, injuries, and treacherous travels throughout his life. Today, he shares with the young men of Apogee his story and the importance of living life without regrets.

Derek is considered to be one of the premier lecturers on the topic of strength and conditioning and exercise sports performance currently working today. In the past eight years, Derek has spoken in more than a dozen countries and has influenced thousands of coaches and personal trainers around the world.

He went on to represent his home country of Canada on two separate occasions as a member of the Canadian National Team, breaking two Canadian National Records and winning multiple National Championships in the process. Derek also worked in both the NFL and NCAA as a professional coach.
Since then, Derek has taken his experience as a professional coach and blended it with his educational background as both an interpersonal communications expert and therapist to create a holistic approach to teaching and understanding the complexities of not only performing human movement but also teaching it to others.

Today, Frank Grillo shares with the young men of Apogee how he gets it done.
