Pharmacists providing care to patients following toxicologic ingestions of medications and other substances are often relied upon for treatment and monitoring recommendations. Many pharmacists do not routinely care for patients following toxicologic ingestions of medications or other substances and are unfamiliar with clinical presentation of various toxidromes and ultimately management strategies. This episode covers anticholinergic, cholinergic, sedative-hypnotic, opioid, sympathomimetic, serotonin syndrome, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, and malignant hypethermia toxidromes and discusses the clinical presentation and causative medications/substances and general treatment approaches, with an emphasis on antidotes for specific toxidromes including physostigmine, naloxone, flumazenil, atropine, and pralidoxime.
