  • BONUS: Drone News – DJI Matrice 300 RTK Sneak Peek, DJI Mavic Air 2 Battery Issue, Remote ID Updates, Drone Deliveries Under Part 107
DJI Matrice 300 Released, DJI Mavic Air 2 Battery Issue, Drone Deliveries Possible Under Part 107, FAA Announces Technology Partners for Remote ID

Our biggest story this week is about the DJI Matrice 300 RTK.

The rumors mills had been abuzz for quite a while now and even we have been sharing regular updates about this enterprise drone on previous shows. All these speculations were finally proven true as DJI released a promotional video announcing the DJI Matrice 300, albeit accidentally.

    DJI Matrice 300 Specs:

Superior AI capabilities55 minutes flight time12 MP Wide, 20 MP ZoomTriple payload capability2.7 kg payload Thermal option available

You have the option of flying a thermal camera (H22) or a non-thermal one (H20) with this drone. What is surprising is that DJI has chosen NOT to partner with FLIR, the industry leader in the thermal camera segment for this particular drone.

Additionally, it is possible to hand over the controls to another pilot, greatly expanding the range of the drone.

When it comes to applications, this drone can result in a more efficient workflow for cell tower and power-line inspections. In today’s show, you will learn how you can automate flight paths as well as camera movements when you fly the DJI Matrice 300. Tune in to this segment of the show to learn more about this monster enterprise drone.

Our next big story is about the DJI Mavic Air 2. If you are planning on buying this new drone, you must check out this story where we discuss battery issues that new pilots are currently struggling with.

There have also have been some interesting developments in the remote id space. FAA has gone ahead and announced technology partners for their new restrictive remote id technology. And this list of technology partners does not include a single drone manufacturer. Neither does this list include any organization that is solely representing the interests of drone service providers.

Regular ADU listeners might recall that the FAA’s remote id NPRM had received 54,000 comments from a worried drone community.  Does this new development indicate that the FAA is not paying heed to all our concerns?

Other topics discussed on this show include DJI M210 vs. DJI 600, drone deliveries under Part 107 and much, much more.

We hope you enjoy this show!

  • ADU 01101: What Can I Do To Deal With Magnetic Interference and Prevent a Drone Flyaway?
Expert Tips for Preventing a Drone Flyaway

Today's show is about preventing a drone flyaway. What steps can you take to mitigate risk and ensure safe drone flight?

Our caller for today, Tom is dealing with interference issues that almost caused a flyaway - twice. Tom was attempting to takeoff from a construction site, and he lost control of his drone inspite of calibrating his IMU. While Tom managed to save his drone, his camera gimbal was damaged and had to be replaced. Where did he go wrong? Anything that Tom should have done differently?

Flying a drone in an interference-heavy environment is certainly a tricky proposition. Apart from choosing the right takeoff point, you also need to calibrate your IMU in the correct manner. In today's show, Paul reveals how you can do exactly that. Additionally, we discuss how learning to fly in Atti mode can help you stave off a potential drone crash. Thanks for the great question, Tom. Fly Safe!

DJI Mavic Air 2 In-Depth Review, FAA Makes it Possible to Renew Your Part 107 Online, Benefits of Flying in Atti Mode, DJI Matrice 300 Delayed due to Coronavirus, Drone Deliveries Under Part 107

Our biggest news story this week is about the DJI Mavic Air 2. DJI has released this much-awaited drone, albeit in difficult market conditions. We managed to get our hands on one of the first pieces of this new drone, and have an in-depth review of you in today's show. We discuss camera sensors, flight time, and low-light capabilities in this segment of the show. Can the DJI Mavic Air prove to be a good replacement for the Mavic 2 Pro and Phantom 4 Pro? Can you build a sustainable and long-term business with this new DJI drone? We discuss all this and much more in this segment of the show.

In our next story, you will learn that in the wake of the virus outbreak, the FAA has now made it possible for Part 107 pilots to renew their licenses online. This is certainly a welcome development, and you can check out this article for step-by-step renewal information.

This serves as a good segue for our next story - which is about drone deliveries. UPS has started using drone deliveries to serve a retirement community in Florida. Because our seniors are most susceptible to the virus, this is a great move as doing so allows delivery providers to adhere to social distancing norms. Here, we reveal that it might be possible for Part 107 pilots to make drone deliveries with an EVLOS waiver.

Other topics discussed in today's show include the latest updates on DJI Matrice 300, Skydio 2 for public safety, and the many benefits of flying in Atti mode. For all this and much, much more, don't miss out latest drone news show. Fly safe!

  • ADU 01099: Can I Use Photogrammetry instead of LiDAR for Surveying Purposes?
LiDAR vs. Photogrammetry - Which is the Best Option for Surveyors?

Today's question is about replacing LiDAR with photogrammetry for surveying purposes. Can photogrammetry prove to be a feasible option?

Our caller for today, Issac is using ground-based LiDAR for surveying purposes. Regular ADU listeners might be aware of the difference between LiDAR and photogrammetry. LiDAR is an active technology costing thousands of dollars. Whereas, photogrammetry is the art of using images for making measurements. Photogrammetry is way more affordable compared to LiDAR and can help you produce lifelike and visually-appealing models.

But, what about accuracy? Using photogrammetry, can you achieve survey-grade accuracy that is comparable to LiDAR?

Autel Robotics Releases the 8K variant of Autel Evo 2, How Public Safety Agencies are using Drones to Fight the Coronavirus, Parrot Anafi UA for Military Use

Our biggest drone news story this week is about the Autel Evo 2. Autel Robotics has finally released the 8K version of this much-awaited and much-delayed drone.

Regular ADU listeners might recall that we tested out this drone when it was first released at CES 2020. Autel is yet to release the 6K and dual variants of this drone. While this drone has best-in-class specs and can be a good addition to your fleet, it remains to be seen how this drone will be received considering the current situation. Will new launches like the Autel Evo 2, DJI Mavic Air 2, and DJI Mavic 3 succeed in reviving a stuttering drone market?

Next, we discuss how drones are being increasingly used by public safety officials to fight the coronavirus. While the intentions are good, public safety agencies tend to go overboard which creates negative public perception. In this segment of the show, we also discuss the pitfalls of flying under a COA. This serves as a good segue to the next story - which is about using drone deliveries for COVID testing.

The drone delivery service provider, Zipline is using drones to facilitate COVID testing in Ghana. Drones deliveries can help enforce social distancing while adhering to social distancing norms. Unlike the US, drone laws are more flexible in African countries, and so they can leverage the power of drone technology for the greater good.

Other topics discussed in today's show include the Parrot Anafi UA and the new omni-directional drone from ETH Zurich.

  • ADU 01098: How Can I Renew My Part 107 Certificate In the Wake of the Coronavirus Outbreak?
Today's question is about renewing your Part 107 certificate in the wake of the virus outbreak.

Our caller, Jaime works as an emergency manager in public health in South Carolina. When he is not on the frontlines bravely fighting the virus outbreak, Jaime also takes up drone jobs as a Part 107 pilot.

Now, Jaime's Part 107 license is due for renewal shortly. But with the lockdown in effect, he cannot possibly renew his certificate right now. What should Jaime do? Can Jaime continue flying without getting into trouble with the FAA?

Excellent question, Jaime. Certainly, many of you must be worried about renewing your Part 107 certificate given the current situation. With all CATS testing centers shut down, is there any way to renew your certificate? If not, will your insurance company process your claim in the event of a drone crash? • BONUS: Drone News – DJI Mavic Air 2 Release Date Confirmed, DJI Matrice 300, NYPD Seizes Drone After Hart Island Photo
DJI confirms April release date for the DJI Mavic Air 2, DJI Matrice 300 to be in stores soon, France to buy 651 drones for surveillance purposes, NYPD seizes drone after Hart Island Photo

Our biggest story this week is about the DJI Mavic Air 2. DJI has confirmed a release date of April 27th for the much-awaited Mavic Air 2. With economic activity curtailed due to the virus outbreak, it shall be interesting to see how this new DJI drone fares commercially. As of now, no information on pricing and specs has been released. You can check out the teaser here.

Next, the French government is the news as it is all set to acquire 651 drones for surveillance purposes. What is interesting is that this multi-million dollar tender states specifications that seem to be tailored for Anafi. Regular ADU listeners might recall how the French government used drones to gather data when a fire broke out at the Notre Dame cathedral. This development also highlights how archaic drone laws are preventing the industry from truly taking off in the United States.

Our next story is about the coronavirus. NYPD recently seized George Steinmetz's drone after he captured some rather shocking images of Hart Island, a tiny island next to Manhattan. George's images show burials being done at Hart Island. And as per reports, there has been a huge spike in burials in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

However, due to the nature of his work, Luke wants to map real estate interiors as well as exteriors. Additionally, he also wishes to use his drone maps for making measurements. What is the best way forward for Luke?

In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the use of 3D drone maps as a real estate marketing tool has simply gone through the roof. With lockdown and social distancing in effect, prospective buyers are reluctant to step out for a property walkthrough. This has created an amazing business opportunity for drone pilots who are aware of the nuances of drone mapping and modeling.

But, while you can capture real estate exteriors using a drone, what is the best and most efficient way of capturing real estate interiors? And, how can you integrate an interior map with an exterior map to build an interactive model? Paul suggests a great hack that can save you thousands of dollars. This show will be particularly interesting to those who are looking for some money-making opportunities in these trying times. Tune in now!
