The American Security Drone Act of 2019, How the delayed launch of Remote ID is preventing drone technology from taking off, Drone Deliveries, Fall-out of US-China Trade Wars and much, much more...

The first story for today is about the American Security Drone Act of 2019. This act will prevent government agencies from utilizing federal funds to buy Chinese-manufactured drones. With many government agencies like fire departments and first responders primarily relying on DJI drones like Phantom and Mavic, this proposed ban could have a huge effect. Is this proposed ban harsh and uncalled for?

Next, we discuss how the delayed launch of Remote ID is preventing drone technology from truly taking off. Remote ID or Drone ID allows authorities to detect drones using systems like DJI Aeroscope. This will enhance drone safety, and eventually lead to wider adoption of drone technology. However, hindered by organizational constraints and resource limitations, the FAA is unlikely to implement this much-needed system anytime soon. In this segment of the show, we debate if we need a federal agency dedicated solely to the unmanned industry.

This serves as a good segue to our next topic - Drone Deliveries. Many nations (including developing ones) have been quick to realize the immense benefits of drone deliveries. However, the US, the most powerful and technologically advanced nation in the world is lagging behind as far as this technology is concerned. In this segment of the show, we discuss some creative uses of drone deliveries. Listeners will learn how brick-and-mortar retail stories can use drones for making last-mile deliveries. Drone Crash? Who is Liable?

Particularly, DJI Mavic 3, the drone that Skydio R2 is directly pitted against is rumored to be equipped with a bigger sensor and enhanced obstacle avoidance capabilities (in comparison to its predecessor, the DJI Mavic 2).

DJI Mavic Mini Release Date and Price Confirmed, NYC Drone Laws Update, LAFD to expand their Firefighting Drone Program, Drone Delivery Business gains traction

Our biggest drone news story this week is about the DJI Mavic Mini. As the rumored release date of October 30 draws closer, we have some more exclusive updates for ADU listeners. DJI officials have reached out to us and confirmed that the DJI Mavic Mini shall be released on October 30 at 9 am EST. Apart from speculating on the rumored specs, we also discuss whether flying a sub-250 gram weight has any major advantages in the United States.

Next, we have some interesting news to share about the drone delivery business. Wing Aviation, in association with FedEx, has commenced drone deliveries for the retail giant, Walgreens in Christiansburg, Virginia. While this news is heartening, the US is far behind countries like Australia where drone delivery business has already taken off in a big way. Does the US have adequate infrastructure to make safe drone deliveries on a mass scale?

Our next story is about NYC drone laws. If you are a regular ADU listener, you might be aware that flying a drone is illegal in NYC. An old avigation law does not permit the takeoff and landing of drones anywhere in NYC. However, an NY city council member, Justin Brannan has proposed new, city-specific drone laws that might legalize flying in NYC.
