Swiss Post Halts Drone Delivery Services, Everdrone Makes its First Drone Delivery, DJI News, DJI's New FPV Transmission System, DJI Osmo Mobile 3, Drone Usage Results in Rising Worker Safety

Swiss Post Halts Drone Delivery Services
Our first drone news story this week is about Swiss Post halting their drone delivery services. Swiss Post, in association with Matternet, had completed nearly 3,000 flights. However, recently, they experienced their second drone crash. While the parachute safety system was deployed, the tether was cut off by the spinning propeller. Fortunately, a crisis was averted as the drone crashed barely 50 feet from a school playground. This incident certainly highlights the need for better parachute safety systems. Regular ADU listeners might recall our past show, "Parachute for Drone | Will Flying Drone over People Become Possible in Future?". In this show, we had highlighted why ballistic parachutes are necessary for a 100% fail-safe solution.
Everdrone completes its First Drone Delivery using GPS-Free Drones
Our next story is also about drone delivery services, albeit an encouraging one. A Swedish company, Everdrone has completed its first drone delivery by transporting medical packages between two hospitals. Uniquely enough, GPS-free drones equipped with ADS-B receivers were used for this job.
DJI's New FPV Transmission System and Osmo Mobile 3
Next, we move on to some of the latest and most exciting DJI News. DJI has launched its all-new Digital FPV Transmission System. This new system comes with higher latency, which results in a more detailed and sharper view. Is DJI gearing up to launch an FPV drone next? DJI has also made an FCC filing for the Osmo Mobile 3. Initial reports reveal that the new Osmo Mobile 3 will be lighter, have a foldable design, and come with a USB-C connection.
What is the Reason Behind Rising Industrial Drone Uses?
Our last segment of drone news is about rising industrial drone uses. Industry majors like BHP, AT&T, and many others are mitigating risk and saving millions of dollars by reducing human intervention. For all this and much more, tune in to our latest show now!

  • ADU 01016: Phantom 4 Pro vs Inspire 2 Drone Comparison – Which is the Better Buy?
Drone Comparison - I Need to Buy a Backup Drone. Should I Buy the Inspire 2, or Settle for the More Affordable Phantom 4 Pro?
In today's show, we have a fascinating drone comparison. We compare the Inspire 2 to the Phantom 4 Pro and reveal the best option for you.

Our caller, Kyle from Idaho, recently attended our in-person mapping class in San Diego. This proved to be a game-changing experience for Kyle as he was able to add new clients and scale up his drone business significantly. Now, Kyle is planning on buying a spare drone so that his work is not affected in case of any equipment failure. Should Kyle buy another Phantom 4 Pro? Or, is it worth spending more to buy the DJI Inspire 2?

The Inspire 2 is a larger bird with greater wind resistance. The ability to carry larger payloads means that this drone can fly the cameras like the X4S with ease. Because of these reasons, there are many additional drone jobs that a pilot can take up with the Inspire 2. In this show, we specifically discuss flying over water and filming action sports. But, can Kyle use the Inspire 2 instead of the Phantom 4 Pro for drone mapping? Is Kyle better off buying the Phantom 4 Pro or Phantom 4 Advanced? Tune to this drone comparison to learn some nuanced information. Thanks for the great question, Kyle. Fly Safe!

  • BONUS: Drone News – LAANC for Hobby Drones, Drone Market Analysis, UPS Drone Delivery, Parrot
FAA Announces New LAANC System for Hobby Drones, Changing Dynamics of the Global Drone Market, UPS Enters the Drone Delivery Market, Parrot Exits the Toy Drone Market
FAA Announces new LAANC System for Recreational Pilots
Our first and biggest drone news story this week is about FAA's new LAANC system for recreational pilots. Effective July 23rd, FAA has expanded its LAANC system to provide hobby drones the option to fly in controlled airspace. While this is a significant development, several concerns need to be addressed to ensure the success of this new system.

The biggest concern is the lack of proper drone education. Are regulatory authorities equipped to impart a thorough, well-rounded knowledge to drone pilots? Paul and Haye discuss why this remains a considerable challenge.
UPS enters the Drone Delivery Market with Flight Forward
Our next story is about drone delivery. After Google, UPS has entered the market by announcing its drone delivery initiative, Flight Forward. Stringent regulations have long prevented drone deliveries from taking off. So, how did UPS manage to get FAA approval for drone deliveries? And, will drone deliveries provide some much-needed traction to a lukewarm eCommerce market?
    Global Drone Market Analysis
Listeners are in for a treat in the next segment of our show where we discuss the changing dynamics of the global drone market. The global drone market, currently pegged at $4.9 million, is set to triple to $14 billion by 2029. But, with the consumer drone market witnessing a slow-down, where will this growth come from? As more and more industries discover the power of drone technology, Paul and Haye reveal why the enterprise market will drive a large percentage of this projected growth.

This serves as an excellent segue to our next story. Cape, a drone software maker for law enforcement drones, has ditched DJI for another drone manufacturer, Skydio. Regular ADU listeners might recall the many data security issues that DJI has had to deal with in recent times. With all these looming security issues, will we see an American drone manufacturer like Skydio capture the law enforcement drone market?

Our last story for the day is about the French drone manufacturer, Parrot. Parrot has completely exited the toy drone market to focus solely on the commercial and enterprise segment. While more competition is certainly great news for the end-user, will this further compound DJI's problem and threaten the market dominance they have enjoyed so far?

Our In-person Mapping Course is coming up in New York, August 1- 4. Over this two-plus day course, we will be introducing and flying a variety of data acquisition types followed by discussion and instruction on how to process the acquired data in Pix4D. • ADU 01013: DJI Matrice 200V2 vs Inspire 2 – Which Is the Best Drone for Cellphone Tower Inspections?
Why the DJI Matrice 200V2 is not the best choice for cellphone tower inspections
Our show for today is about enterprise drones. You will learn some important and little-known reasons why you are better off using a consumer drone like the Inspire 2 over an enterprise drone like DJI Matrice 200V2.

Our caller for today, Jason is in a bind. His brand-new DJI Matrice 200V2 is not compatible with the iPad. Jason switched over to Android and discovered that the DJI Matrice 200V2 only works with the DJIPilot App. This is again a problem for Jason since the DJIPilot App does not come with a point of interest mode. Having reached a dead-end, Jason reached out to DJI. DJI recommended using the GS Pro App. However, yet again, this is not a feasible solution as the GS Pro App works only with iOS.

This show will serve as an eye-opener for current and aspiring enterprise drone owners. Listeners will learn about the various issues that are they are likely to run into when they buy an enterprise drone like the DJI Matrice 200v2. Is there anyway Jason can use his DJI Matrice 200V2 for cellphone tower inspections? Tune in to find out. Thanks for the great question, Jason. Fly Safe!

  • BONUS: FAA Launches New LAANC System – Hobby Drones Can Now Fly in Controlled Airspace
In today's show, we have some excellent news for recreational pilots. FAA has expanded its LAANC system giving hobby drones access to controlled airspace.

Kevin Morris from the FAA joins us today to discuss the implications of this new development on hobby drones. This show starts with Kevin sharing some background information about the 2018 FAA Reauthorization Act and how it impacted hobby drones. This Act, signed by President Trump in late 2018 repealed Section 336 and placed greater restrictions on drone pilots. Later on, in May 2019, new FAA rules came into effect which made it necessary for all hobby drones to get FAA's permission to fly in controlled airspace (namely B, C, D, and E2).

With the LAANC system not yet equipped to handle requests from hobby drones, this new FAA rule placed a de facto ban on hobby drones. However, in today's show, we have some good news in store for hobby pilots.
Effective July 23rd, FAA has expanded its LAANC system to include hobby drones.
Kevin, in this show, reveals all that recreational pilots need to know to get their airspace authorization and fly in controlled airspace. Among other things, in this show, you will learn:

What is the procedure for getting an airspace authorization?
Who are the different LAANC providers who can grant airspace authorization to recreational pilots?
Part 107 vs. Hobby flying - what is the difference?
Which airports are currently equipped with LAANC?

Tune in to our show to get an entire breakdown of this new development. You can check out FAA's official announcement here. This is a show you do not want to miss. Fly Safe!

  • ADU 01012: 400 Feet Rule | Can I Fly Higher in Controlled Airspace If My Takeoff Point Is Higher?
Can you fly at higher elevations in controlled airspace if your takeoff point is higher? What if you are breaching the shelf of controlled airspace?
Today's question is about the 400 feet rule. What are the rules for flying your drone from higher takeoff points? Can you fly higher on doing so?

Our caller for today, Mark from Arizona, has a great question about the 400 feet rule. Mark has the authorization to fly 100 feet AGL in Class E airspace. As you might know, the 400 feet AGL rule allows drone pilots to fly 400 feet above ground level. But, what if your takeoff point is higher, and you are flying in controlled airspace? Can you fly at higher altitudes in this case?

In this show, you will learn how the 400 feet rule is interpreted differently as per the airspace that you are flying in. Can you fly 400 feet AGL from a higher takeoff point if you are breaching the shelf of controlled airspace? And, can you be wrongly identified as a rogue drone by counter-surveillance systems like DJI Aerospace if you are taking off from a higher point? Tune in to find out. Exciting DJI News, DJI Rumors and other Drone News...
In our first big drone news story, we have some exciting news for you. DJI has resumed production of their flagship drone, the Phantom 4 Pro. We have repeatedly discussed why the Phantom 4 Pro is unmatched when it comes to reliability and versatility. But, will DJI again discontinue production in 2020 when ADSB receivers on all drones become mandatory? Will we see a slew of DJI drone launches in 2020 when this new requirement kicks in?

Our next big drones news story is about the DJI Ronin-SC. DJI has launched a mini version of their popular camera gimbal, the Ronin-S. This new camera gimbal comes with some pretty impressive features like Active Trak 3.0 and Force Mobile. Weighing just 2.4 lbs, this compact camera gimbal allows you to follow a subject, pretty much like a drone. While this new camera gimbal is lighter and cheaper (costs $439) than its predecessor, will this compact build limit payload?

Our next story is about New York City drone laws. An archaic 71-year old law prohibits takeoff and landing of drones in New York City. Now, two New York City Council members have proposed new drone laws that legalize drone use. Other topics discussed include anamorphic lenses for the Mavic 2 and the new BBC documentary, Britain's Next Air Disaster? Drones.

  • ADU 01011: DJI Phantom 4 Pro Rumors – Will DJI Revive Their Flagship Drone?
As per Latest DJI Rumors, Will DJI Kill the Phantom 4 Pro? As a Phantom 4 Pro User, What Should I Do?
Today's show is about the Phantom 4 Pro.

Our caller, Ken from New Jersey, has a question about the DJI Phantom 4 Pro. So far Ken has been unable to find a good replacement drone for the DJI Phantom 4 Pro. Like many in the drone industry, Ken is worried about the lack of availability for the Phantom 4. He is wondering if the industry rumors are indeed true. Is DJI killing it's most popular brand?

Industry observers and drone lovers alike have been disappointed by lack of activity from DJI in recent times. While DJI is continuing to come out new launches like the ground robot Robomaster S1 and the Ronin SC camera gimbal, we have certainly witnessed a long dry spell as far as drones are concerned.

Apart from the lack of availability for the Phantom 4 Pro, it is interesting to note that plans to launch new drones like the DJI Phantom 5 and the DJI Spark 2 have been delayed or permanently scrapped.

So, has DJI shifted their focus from drones to other products? Should you be worried about DJI shutting down the Phantom 4 series? Will DJI discontinue manufacturing of spares as well? If you are a current Phantom owner, this is a show you do not want to miss. Tune in for the latest industry news. And don't forget, you first heard it on Ask Drone U. Thanks for the great question, Ken. Fly Safe!
