  • ADU 0989: How Do I Maintain Line of Sight When Subject Tracking With My Drone?
Today's question is about subject tracking with your drone. How do you fly fast, super-close, AND safe when subject tracking with your drone?

Our caller for today, Jeremy has a great question about subject tracking with your drone. To master this advanced skill, Jeremy is unsure how he can maintain a deadlock over his subject without losing control over the drone's orientation. And, can Jeremy capture the required footage without compromising on safety?

Subject tracking is a drone application that requires considerable practice and expertise. A drone pilot needs to fly fast (at the speed of the boat or car) and up-close to grab smooth footage. This becomes difficult and dangerous as you have to look at your screen AND monitor your drone. Can you control your drone orientation if you are looking away from your screen? And, can you safely fly your drone if you are looking away from the drone (at your screen)? What is the best way to resolve this dilemma?

In this show, we discuss possible solutions like hiring a VO (Visual Observer), using FPV goggles and flying in autonomous mode. Thanks for the great question, Jeremy. Fly Safe!

  • ADU 0988: Are Drone Feeds Encrypted?
Today's show is about drone feed encryption. How easy is it for someone to nefariously connect to your drone feed and access your data?

Our caller, Ron from Dallas has a great question about drone feed encryption. Is your drone data really secure? Can you beef your encryption and data security by buying an enterprise level drone?

You will be surprised to know that most drone feeds are not encrypted. In fact, using a Flysight monitor, you can pick up different drone feeds to easily access someone else's data. But, what about prosumer and enterprise level drones like Mavic Enterprise, DJI Matrice, and DJI Inspire? Do these drones have stronger encryption? Can you really access any drone feed using counter drone technology like DJI Aeroscope? Tune in to find out. Thanks for the great question, Ron. Fly Safe!

DJI News, Aeromexico 747 Collision, DOD Selects Parrot to Develop Spy Drone, DJI Manifold Supercomputer for Autonomous Operations, DHS voices Data Security Concerns for DJI
Our first new drone story this week is about the Aeromexico Boeing 737 plane that was initially reported to be damaged by a drone collision in December 2018. NTSB, after extensive investigations, have debunked this theory. According to NTSB, 737's radome (a dome-like shell at the nose of the aircraft), already weakened due to poor repairs, was unable to withstand the change of air pressure during descent. As was the case with the alleged drone sightings in Gatwick and Newark, this news story again highlights the misplaced fears over drone safety.

Our second big DJI News story is about the US Department of Homeland Security's last week warning about data security issues with Chinese manufactured drones. Are these concerns valid or politically motivated? Are these constant streams of negative news disrupting the US drone industry? This topic serves as a good segue into our next story. The US Army has selected the French drone manufacturer, Parrot, as one of the organizations responsible for manufacturing a spy drone. Weighing less than 3 pounds, this drone will supposedly have a range of 2 miles.

In other DJI News, you will also learn about DJI Manifold, an onboard supercomputer that can facilitate autonomous drone operations. With greater computing power, onboard processing of LiDAR data might become possible in the future too. For all this and much more, tune in to our latest show now!

  • ADU 0987: Where Can I Fly my Drone? Can Drone Privacy Laws Prevent me from Flying?
Where Can I Fly My Drone? Do Drone Privacy Laws Restrict Flight in Private and Public Spaces?
Today's question is about knowing where to fly your drone without getting into trouble. What are some important drone privacy laws that you need to be aware of before setting flight?

Our caller, Bob from New Jersey is a newly certified Part 107 pilot. Confused with the myriad of drone laws and aware of the FAA's poor lack of enforcement, Bob is wondering if he can go ahead and fly his drone in big, open public spaces without checking airspace at all. Can Bob get into trouble for doing so?

In order to answer Bob's question, we reveal whether drone privacy laws prohibit you from flying in public spaces. First of all, what are some recommended resources for checking where you can safely and legally fly your drone? Should you rely on drone apps like B4UFly for checking airspace? And, do cities and states have the right to enact legal ordinances which prevent you from setting flight?

Apart from the above, we also reveal the various Do's and Don'ts for flying a drone over private property. Can drone pilots freely take photographs of private property? Other topics discussed drone shoot downs, dealing with unruly intruders and the right of Native Americans over airspace. This is a show you do not want to miss. Thanks for the great question, Bob. • BONUS: Drone News | DJI News, Mavic 2 Pro, Drone Advisory Committee, FAA’s New Drone Rules
DJI News, Mavic 2 Pro Hack, Drone Advisory Committee, FAA's New Drone Rules for Hobby Pilots

In our first drone news story this week, we talk about data security issues with DJI drones. Recently, DJI was in the news for the wrong reasons as there were allegations against the Chinese manufacturer of stealing sensitive data and passing it on to the Chinese government. While the allegations proved to be baseless, this has affected the manufacturer's reputation and sales. Is there a foolproof and secure way of protecting your drone data? And, is this news politically motivated because of the US-China trade wars?

Our next story is about the Drone Advisory Committee. FAA has filled the Drone Advisory Committee, an important decision-making body with large corporations and Part 61 pilots. Zero representation from drone service providers in this 35-member committee is both surprising and disappointing. We also discuss the FAA's new drone rules for hobby pilots. While these new rules may be a step in the right direction, will a lack of supporting infrastructure result in greater non-compliance? Other stories discussed include Mavic 2's Smart Controller and the Mavic 2 Pro hack for flying in Atti mode. Tune in for the latest and most exciting drone news now!

  • ADU 0986: Drone Crash? Here’s What You Should Do Next
Reporting a Drone Crash to the NTSB and FAA
In this show, Bill English from NTSB shares WHEN and HOW to report a drone crash. Tune in for detailed, step-by-step instructions.

What should you do if you crash your drone? If you are Part 107 pilot flying a drone, you must be aware that your bird can cause significant damage to person and property in the event of a crash.

Because drones are classified as aircraft, a drone crash needs to be investigated by the NTSB. But, should you report every crash to the NTSB? If not, how do you know if your crash is a  serious and reportable incident? What are the physical and financial damage thresholds for reporting a drone crash? You will also learn if you should report your drone crash to the FAA in addition to NTSB. Thanks to Bill for this excellent information. This is a show you do not want to miss. Tune in now!

Check out NTSB's Advisory to Operators of Civil Unmanned Aircraft Systems in the United States for more information on this topic.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Reporting a Drone Crash

Step 1: Prepare an Emergency Response Plan

An effective plan for dealing with damage and injury caused by your drone
Always keep a First-Aid Kit and Fire Extinguisher within reach
Ensure you have reliable cell phone coverage so that you can call 911

Step 2: Gauge the extent of damage caused by the drone crash

Not every drone crash needs to be reported to the NTSB.
If your drone crash did not hurt anyone or cause significant damage to property (Check Step 3), you do NOT need to report a crash
If your drone crash caused severe injury, it would be subject to strict reporting requirements

Step 3: Report a serious drone crash to the NTSB immediately

Serious accidents like mid-air collisions need to be reported immediately
When you hurt someone badly, report it immediately.
If you crash into a tree and do not hurt anyone or cause any damage to property, you do NOT need to report the drone crash
Because drones are classified as aircraft, NTSB will investigate serious incidents
Preserve evidence in the event of serious crashes

Step 4: Report a drone crash to the FAA DroneZone

Report a drone crash within ten days
All drone crashes that cause significant physical harm or financial harm should be reported
Any damages over $500 need to be reported

Our caller, Lorenz from Wisconsin, is using a DJI Phantom 4 RTK for drone mapping. Lorenz is wondering if he needs to make any significant changes to his mapping workflow. Are there any issues specific to Phantom 4 RTK users that Lorenz needs to be aware of?

In this very detailed show, DJI Phantom 4 RTK users will learn the most accurate and efficient drone mapping workflow. In the past, we have shared our experiences with the Phantom 4 RTK. While there are many advantages to this RTK drone, you will have to deal with some unique problems too. For instance, when you acquire data with the DJI Phantom 4 RTK, the datum for images and GCP's tends to differ. What do you do in this case?

In this show, you will learn when and how to make changes and corrections to your coordinate system. You will learn about geiod height and whether you should set your geiod height above WS G84 ellipsoid. How do you make corrections when mapping a large area with different offset values? Will using the Propeller Aeropoints along with DJI Phantom 4 RTK result in more accurate drone mapping data? Thanks for the great question, Lorenz. Fly Safe!
