  • ADU 0666: Can I buy a thermal camera for my Inspire 2?
Today, we have an episode about the Inspire 2 and its compatibility with thermal cameras.  If you're a drone pilot looking start mapping, you'll need to know which equipment to buy and how to properly use it.

We take a call from Nir in Georgia, who wants to know which thermal camera or zoom camera is compatible with his Inspire 2.  While there aren't as many thermal camera options for the Inspire 2 as some other drones, there are definitely some products out there.  We discuss which thermal cameras and zoom cameras work best with the Inspire 2.  In addition, we talk about the hardware and batteries you'll need to get your thermal camera off the ground.  Thanks for the question Nir!  Fly safe!

  • ADU 0665: How lucrative is the drone mapping business?
On today’s episode, we talk about making (and spending) money when starting a drone mapping business.  Ryan, a recent Part 107 recipient, calls in to ask us a few questions about the drone mapping business.  Can you make money mapping?  Does the drone mapping business cost a lot to get started in?  Can you compete in the drone industry if you don’t offer multispectral or hyperspectral LIDAR imaging services?
First, we talk about the cost of the equipment you’ll need to get into the mapping industry.  While tools like LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors are quite expensive, they can be extremely valuable to clients across many industries.
Next, we discuss the practical applications of equipment like LIDAR sensors.  For those of you who are planning to invest in mapping sensors for your business, we make some recommendations about the best stuff to buy.
Thanks for the question, Ryan!  Congrats on the Part 107!  Fly safe!

  • BONUS EPISODE: Should drone pilots be supporting Airmap?
Recently the Drone U team was sent a compromising email that showcased that Airmap was actively supporting the Fienstein drone federalism bill, the drone innovation act which both promote a patchwork of local drone laws. Essentially these bills would empower local authorities to have control over the airspace up to 200 feet, creating a climate of chaos for drone pilots. Should pilots support Airmap when they are attempting to take the Federal Aviations Authority away?

  • ADU 0664: Do VIP TFRs affect all drones or only Part 107 pilots?
This episode is all about Temporary Flight Restrictions.  In case you are unaware, there is a special classification of TFR that prohibits flight during “VIP Movement”.  In short, this means that drones are prohibited from flying when the president, a senator or anyone else with a VIP designation is in the area.
Dave and Josh from Nashville called in to clarify whether or not the VIP TFR applied to everyone or only Part 107 drone pilots.  In response, we talk a little bit about what constitutes a VIP Movement restriction and who they apply to.  Additionally, we discuss TFR waivers and how you can apply for one.

  • ADU 0663: How do I get over my fear of flying?
Today’s episode should be helpful for anyone who’s afraid to fly their drone.  After all, many drone pilots have a fear of flying.  Drones are expensive and no one wants to crash a costly piece of equipment they spent so much money on.
Scott from North Carolina calls in to ask if we have any advice on getting over the fear of flying.  We talk about ways to build confidence, to let go of your fears and to accept failure.  If you’re afraid to fly your drone, it will take some time to truly get over your fear of flying.  With patience and practice, however, you’ll learn to not be afraid of flying your drone.
