APDVS Lifetime Achievement in Education Award Winner, Dr. Jack Cronenwett: History of the APDVS, the vascular integrated residency, and the VQI
Dr. Jack Cronenwett was recently awarded the first Lifetime Achievement in Education Award from the Association for Program Directors in Vascular Surgery (APDVS). We are very excited to have Dr. Cronenwett join us to give us his perspective on the history of the APDVS, the Vascular Integrated Residency, and the Vascular Quality Initiative.
Dr. Cronenwett is an Active Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He was Chair of the section of Vascular Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center from 1984 to 2007. He is a past president of the Society for Vascular Surgery, as well as the New England Society for Vascular Surgery. He served as the medical director for the vascular surgery study group of New England from 2002 to 2014, and was the medical director of the SVS Patient Safety Organization (also known as the Vascular Quality Initiative) at its creation in 2011.
He is also a past member of the Residency Review Committee for Surgery for the ACGME.
In that role, he developed the first program requirements for integrated residency for the RRC, and in 2007, Dartmouth was one of the first three programs to create an integrated vascular residency.
He is editor emeritus of the Journal of Vascular Surgery and the seventh and eighth additions of Rutherford's Vascular Surgery. He is the current editor of Vascular Decision Making.
In 2016, Dr. Cronenwett received the lifetime achievement award of the society for vascular surgery. He is the inaugural recipient for the 2021 APDVS lifetime achievement award.

“VSIG Live!’ with Drs. Ben Pearce, Loay Kabbani, and Jonathan Bath
The Association of Program Directors in Vascular Surgery Recruitment of Medical Student and Residents Committee will present a free informational webinar, ‘VSIG Live!’, at 6pm CST on Thursday, March 25th, 2021. The intent of ‘VSIG Live!’ is to allow all U.S. medical students to experience a Vascular Surgery Interest Group meeting and learn more about Vascular Surgery, even in the absence of a local chapter.

Dr. Benjamin Pearce is an Associate Professor of Surgery and the Program Director for the Vascular Surgery Integrated Residency and Fellowship Programs at the University of Alabama School of Medicine.
Dr. Loay Kabbani is an Associate Professor of Surgery and Program Director for the Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the Henry Ford Hospital, Wayne State University. He is also co-chair of the Recruitment of Medical Student and Residents Committee for the APDVS.
Dr. Jonathan Bath, MD is an Assistant Professor of Surgery and the Program Director for the Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He is co-chair of the Recruitment of Medical Student and Residents Committee for the APDVS.

Dr. Barend Mees joins us to discuss the upcoming 24th European Vascular Course, and how they are adapting surgical simulation to virtual education. Dr. Mees is a consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon in the department of Vascular Surgery at MUMC+ in Maastricht. He currently is Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the department of Vascular Surgery. His clinical area of interest is the endovascular treatment of complex aortic disease and peripheral arterial disease. He is the research coordinator of the department of Vascular Surgery and has obtained a PhD in Vascular Biology from Erasmus MC, INSERM (U689, Paris) and Max-Planck Institute (Bad Nauheim, Germany). His main research focus areas are vascular biology, tissue engineering and training in innovative endovascular techniques.
Dr. Mee is the inventor of the MAZE Box, a novel hands-on training simulator for Endovascular Surgery and tutor for Vascular International. Dr. Mees is an examiner of the UEMS FEBVS examination since 2017. He is organizer of the I-MEET congress and course director of the European Vascular Course. He has been Secretary of the Dutch Society for Vascular Surgery since 2018.
