  • Surgeon Advocacy and Medicare Reimbursement Changes

    Drs. Tracci, Sideman, Connolly, and Mattos, representing the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) Policy and Advocacy Council, Government Relations Committee (GRC), and the Political Action Committee (PAC), join Adam Johnson and Nicole Rich to discuss how they became involved and specifically their work regarding the United States Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Payment Reforms that will go into effect in January 2021.

    The updated physician fee schedule will substantially alter the Evaluation and Management (E/M) Codes that physicians use to bill for office-based services provided to Medicare patients. Our panelists detail how these changes will decrease reimbursement for surgical procedures, impact the field of vascular surgery, and the importance of surgeon involvement in the advocacy process.

    • Dr. Peter Connolly (@phcvascular) is an associate professor of surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, NY, and co-chair of the SVS Political Action Committee (PAC).
    • Dr. Mark Mattos is a self-employed vascular surgeon, the program director for the vascular surgery fellowship at Michigan Vascular Center in Flint, MI, and co-chair of the SVS Political Action Committee (PAC).

  • Advice for Applicants to the Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency

    With the interview season underway amidst a pandemic, we sought out advice for students applying to the integrated vascular surgery residency from three experts. 

    Dr. Chelsea Dorsey was recently on the podcast discussing recruitment and retention of under-represented minorities at all levels. Dr. Dorsey attended medical school at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, and completed an integrated vascular surgery residency at Stanford University.  She serves as Director of Preclinical Advising in the medical school - a role that allows her to have significant facetime with 1st and 2nd year students. Of note, she also serves as Director of the MS3 Surgical Simulation Course and was recently nominated to the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators at the University. She currently sits on a number of regional and national education committees, including the SVS, COVERS, and MVSS.

    Dr. Murray Shames (@MurrayShames)  is the current President of the Association for Program Directors in Vascular Surgery, as well as the Division Chief of Vascular Surgery and former Program Director at the University of South Florida. His teaching experience includes developing models for the Fundamentals of Vascular Surgery and Fundamentals of Endovascular Surgery courses. He has been the course Co-Director for the Introduction to Academic Vascular Surgery Course in Tampa since 2012, and has served as an instructor/preceptor to dozens of residents since coming back to USF in 2002. 

    Dr. Arash Fereydooni (@Arash_Fere) is currently one of the first-year integrated vascular surgery residents at Stanford University. Dr. Fereydooni completed a BS and MS in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at Yale.  He then received his medical degree in 2020 from Yale School of Medicine where he did a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Alan Dardik. He currently serves on the Student Education committees of SVS and VESS. In 2019, he started the annual SVS Integrated Vascular Surgery Match webinar.

    Dr. Benjamin Starnes is a Professor of Vascular Surgery, Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery for UW Medicine. Additionally he is a former military surgeon with combat experience.

    Dr. Westley Ohman is an Assistant Professor of Vascular Surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital which is a level 1 trauma center where he is routinely involved in the care of complex vascular trauma.

    Trauma Surgery

    Dr. Tanya Zakrison is an Associate Professor of Surgery and a Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon at the University of Chicago medical center, which is a level 1 trauma center.

    Dr. Matthew Martin is a Professor of Surgery at Scripps Medical Center in San Diego, a former Army Surgeon who is recognized as a leader in trauma care, and has served on 5 combat deployments.
