  • Blackberry is my Cologne Kolsch Knee Deep and Omnipollo Andreas Oat IPA

Today I drink Blackberry Is My Cologne Kolsch by Knee Deep Brewing Company. I received this beer as gratuity from the last show my band played. It is perfect for summer at 5% alcohol.

It is light, refreshing and slightly sour.

I also drink Omnipollo brewing’s Andreas Oat IPA. It is a 7% abv beer. They are from Sweden, but I think they contract brew in the USA.

Their product is a good product, I knew it from the first smell. I never drank their beer before, but am hungry for more.

I have a song at the end of the show from my former band The Monomyth Inception called Open Target (on spotify). My band is now called the Mean Muggers.

Listen for $0.00 (free) on this website, the apple podcasts app, facebook, google play, and/or stitcher.

  • Red Stripe Lager and Listermann Brewing’s Wisconsin Stout

I finally got my website repaired, so you can visit bminusshow.com if you stream this podcast that way. Im stoked! (podcast below).

I also just played a show. I will go into detail on the show about that also.

Today I drink Red Stripe Jamaican Lager. It is 4.7 abv and has fruity and grainy notes. This company went public back in the 70’s and sold to Heineken in 2015.

They have a very consistent product, which seems enjoyable on a hot day.

I also drink Listermann Brewing company’s Wisconsin Stout. At 10% abv, I should have a good topper offer for the show. This beer has maple and lactose (lactose isn’t my favorite adjunct in a beer, but beer is beer).

Stouts are some of the most intricate, sought after beers in the world. They have evolved significantly over time. Here are the guidelines for this “imperial” stout:

    * American-Style Imperial Stout* Color: Black* Clarity: Opaque* Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Extremely rich malty aroma is typical. Extremely rich malty flavor with full sweet malt character is typical. Roasted malt astringency and bitterness can be moderate but should not dominate the overall character.* Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Medium-high to high with floral, citrus and/or herbal character.* Perceived Bitterness: Medium-high to very high and balanced with rich malt character.* Fermentation Characteristics: Fruity esters are high. Diacetyl should not be present.* Body: Full

    * Original Gravity (°Plato) 1.080-1.100 (19.3-23.7 °Plato)* Apparent Extract/Final Gravity (°Plato) 1.020-1.030 (5.1-7.6 °Plato)* Alcohol by Weight (Volume) 5.5%-9.5% (7.0%-12.0%)* Bitterness (IBU) 50-80* Color SRM (EBC) 40+(80+ EBC)

  • Avery Brewing Hazyish IPA and Einstok Wee Heavy beer tastings

On today’s show, I will sip on (chug + taste) two beers (again).

The first beer is Avery Brewing’s Hazyish IPA. It is a 7% abv beer. The brewery is from Boulder, Colorado. Of course, the beer is made with Rocky Mountain water, I wouldn’t expect anything less.

Here are the brewers assosh’s guidelines for a hazy or juicy IPA:

Juicy or Hazy India Pale Ale

    * Color: Straw to deep gold* Clarity: Low to very high degree of cloudiness is typical of these beers. Starch, yeast, hop, protein and/or other compounds contribute to a wide range of hazy appearance within this category.* Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Low to medium-low malt aroma and flavor may be present* Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Medium-high to very high hop aroma and flavor are present, with attributes typical of hops from any origin* Perceived Bitterness: Low to medium. The impression of bitterness is soft and well-integrated into overall balance and may differ significantly from measured or calculated IBU levels.* Fermentation Characteristics: Medium to medium-high fruity esters are present, and can contribute to the perception of sweetness and be complementary to the hop profile. Diacetyl should not be present.* Body: Medium-low to medium-high. A silky or full mouthfeel may contribute to overall flavor profile.* Additional notes: Grist may include oats, wheat or other adjuncts to promote haziness. The term “juicy” is frequently used to describe taste and aroma attributes often present in these beers which result from late, often very large, additions of hops. A juicy character is not required, however. Other hop-derived attributes such as citrus, pine, spice, floral or others may be present with or without the presence of juicy attributes.

    Original Gravity (°Plato) 1.060-1.070(14.7-17.1 °Plato) • Apparent Extract/Final Gravity (°Plato) 1.008-1.020(2.0-5.0 °Plato) • Alcohol by Weight (Volume) 5.0%-6.0% (6.3%-7.5%) • Bitterness (IBU) 30-60; may differ significantly from perceived bitterness • Color SRM (EBC) 4-9(8-18 EBC)

The second beer is Einstock Beer Co’s Wee Heavy. It is an 8% beer. This brewery is from Iceland. While it may be cold as ice there, they manage to stay warm with the fire beer they make.

Here are the guidelines for a wee heavy from the brewers association:

    Scotch Ale or Wee Heavy

    * Color: Light reddish-brown to very dark* Clarity: Chill haze is acceptable at low temperatures* Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Scotch Ales are aggressively malty with a rich and dominant sweet malt aroma and flavor. A caramel character is often part of the profile. Dark roasted malt flavors may be present at low levels.* Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Not present to very low* Perceived Bitterness: Not present to very low* Fermentation Characteristics: Fruity esters, if present, are generally at low levels. Diacetyl is usually absent in these beers but may be present at low levels.* Body: Full* Additional notes: Pleasant, low level oxidation is acceptable in Scotch Ales. Examples exhibiting more prevalent oxidation are categorized as Aged Beer. While there are conflicting theories as to whether traditional Scotch Ales exhibited peat smoke character, the current marketplace offers many examples with peat smoke character present at low to medium levels. Peat smoke attributes may be absent or present at low to medium levels. Versions exhibiting higher levels of smoke character are categorized as Smoke Beer. When using these guidelines as the basis for evaluating entries at competitions, competition organizers may create subcategories which reflect groups of entries based on presence or absence of peat smoke-derived attributes.

  • Dust Bowl Hobo Pilsner and Alaskan Icy Bay IPA beer tastings

Check out my band The Mean Muggers on facebook and reverbnation.

Get streams to my podcast, subscribe on the apple podcasts app, facebook, google play, and/or stitcher.

    The podcast is below!

Today on the show, I drink Dust Bowl brewing company’s Hobo Pilsner. It’s a 5.3% abv beer. They are from Turlock, Ca (where Colin Kaepernick is from). They have been around since like 2006.

They are independent, as well as the below brewery.

The other beer I drink is Alaskan brewing’s Icy Bay IPA. It’s a light 6.2% abv beer. They have been around for a minute and this beer is evidence they are not joking when it comes around to quality.

You have to be bad ass to start, maintain, grow and excel in brewing in Alaska. Hats off to ya ABC!

  • Drakes Flyway Pilsner and Deschutes Fresh Haze IPA

Drakes is an independent brewery with mad respect from me. They do cool stuff for the community, for beer lovers and for the beer community.

They are outta San Leandro and opened a spot called “THE BARN” in West Sacramento, which is a superman’s stone throw from my house.

I try the 4.5% abv Flyway PILSner beer in this episode, which is 43 IBU’s and pretty freshly canned (one month prior to this tasting).

I also drink Deschutes Fresh Haze IPA which is a 6.5% beer. It is a hazy IPA which I am sure is inspired from their famous Fresh Squeezed IPA, but hazy. I have had this beer before, I remember it being hella good.

They are an independent brewery outta Bend, Oregon. That’s like hella north west on the map at Oregon. They do some super cool sustainable stuff like save water and prevent pollution.

They also have a brewpub in Portland. I want to visit that one or the Bend one. I’ll probably wear skinny jeans, a lumberjack flannel and half mast beanie on my head to fit in (probably not) the hippie/hipster/green vibe images that conjure in my mind. Needless to say, I would like to go to one of their locations and drink their beer.

Today I drink a Mexican style lager called Buenos Tiempos from Belching Beaver Brewery. It is a 4.8% beer.

Mexican lagers are super popular right now, I will find out if this beer is one of the reasons for that or not.

Known for their nitro peanut butter stout, they also tend to make a wide variety of great beers including a couple of sours and collaborations with Deftones (a band from Sacramento!).

They are from Oceanside, Ca (So-Cal), in the cluster of a bunch of awesome breweries with a bad ass beer culture.

I also drink Boulder Beer Companies’ Killer Penguin barleywine ale. It is a hefty 10% beer. I don’t know if my podcast episodes on beer tasting are whole without a high abv beer. So here we go.

They are “Boulders first micro brewery” established in 1979. They have a great chocolate porter and a good IPA from my own tasting experience.

The dudes that founded it were physics professors or something from U of Colorado. That was the only real story I got from research.

  • Fall River Lazy Hazy NE IPA and Sierra Nevada Hoptimum Triple IPA tastings

Check out the free podcast stream below!

Fall River Brewing is from Redding, Ca. It’s pretty up north in CA. This beer is 8% and I taste it on the show.

They started in 2011 from a homebrewer/construction worker dude and wife team. I never had any of their beers and after this tasting, I am eager to try another one of their beers to determine if I want to make the trek to see and visit their brewery on purpose.

I also drink the Sierra Nevada Brewing Hoptimum Triple IPA. It is a heavy 9.6% beer.

I talk about how I love this brewery and why.

I also plug my band again in this episode. I talk about and show how I have progressed in my abilities to play different scales and progressions with more ease than in the past.

I also talk about my brew day a little bit. I did a lot today. I deserved these beers!

I can’t say enough about Mikkeller, their innovation and global outreach is simply awesome. They are from Denmark and then San Diego, but have expanded throughout the world.

This beer is a double IPA at 8.8% with Kveik (ka-wike) Yeast. This yeast is an ancient Nordic yeast that is hot hot hot right now with brewers. It brings out “farmhouse” like flavors, which means it should be slightly sour and crisp.

They also added ID 7 and Rakau Hops. I can’t wait to hit up one of their breweries or brewpubs. One is in SF, so I might have to make a quick day trip here soon.

Bear Republic brewery is another great brewery that is known for their Racer 5 IPA (delish!). They are out of Cloverdale, Ca or the northern California wine country region in other words.

I have been to this brewery and talked about it in another episode.

I drink their “Challenge Series 11” double brut IPA with citra and galaxy hops.

It is an 8% beer that should not disappoint as their other beers are hella good.

  • Kronenbourg 1664 French Pale Lager and North Coast Brewing Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout beer tastings

*The free podcast stream is below the article.

Kronenbourg has been around for a minute. They are in fact a few hundred years old. They have, however, been bought out multiple times by larger corporations and investors, so the story behind the beer is just a foot note at this point.

Oh, they are also originally French. It is IMPORTED FROM FRANCE (per the label).

It is a 5% Euro Pale Lager. It isn’t too shabby though, it’s refreshing and has some complexity.

I also drink North Coast brewing companies’ Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout. At 9% abv, it’s a heavy hitter. They are outta’ Fort Bragg, Ca. I’m a bit jealous because my future in laws hit this place up and I have not…yet.

This is a privately owned brewery that has bad ass beers like this one, Old Stock Ale, Brother Theolonious and Pranqster. Their Scrimshaw Pilsner isn’t to fucking shabby either.

They even have a barrel program as well as other stuff.

I want to visit the north coast for the beer and the views. They make some good stuff here. Definitely check out this brewery / beer if you get a chance.
