  • 575. Unexpected Friends: a short story for kids
Mya Mouse meets a new friend, Skylar Skunk, and learns that they aren't that different from each other after all.
    Narrator: Female

    Story Begins: 4:27
    Unexpected Friends Excerpt:

It was a beautiful sunny day on Ahway Island. The big yellow sun was bright and happy, shining down on the green grass. The sun always made sure that everyone in the forest was nice and warm. The pretty green leaves fell around the entrance to Mya Mouse’s burrow. Mya popped her head out of her burrow, sniffed the fresh air and smiled. Mya was excited. Today, she planned on being extra nice to herself, she was going to find her favorite snacks from the forest and relax near her burrow. It was such a beautiful day outside, Mya wanted to enjoy it with a yummy treat.

Mya crawled out of her burrow and stretched. Mya was a very small mouse, the green grass felt much taller than it would for other animals. Mya was happy that the grass was nice and cool as it touched her warm brown fur. Then Mya started walking toward some of the berry bushes she loved to play in. There were lots of bushes to choose from, but Mya knew which one had the sweetest berries on it; a tall, light green bush with juicy red berries on it. There were always enough berries on this bush for Mya and her friends.

Bliss the Blanket waits on the couch to snuggle up with a book. Will she hear a good story today?
Hello everyone!  We hope you enjoyed our new story this week. Now, welcome to Favorite Friday! Sometimes we like to listen to our favorites again. Please enjoy “Snuggle Up” and we’ll be back with a new story on Monday!
    Narrator: Male

    Story Begins: 8:16

    Snuggle Up Excerpt:
Clouds blanketed the sky, and big white snowflakes drifted to the ground outside the window of the family room.  The fluffy green blanket was folded up neatly on the couch.  Waiting patiently for the little girl to pick out a book, Bliss the blanket relaxed in the glowing light of the fire in the fireplace.  She enjoyed hearing the logs crackle and pop as the room grew more cozy.

Flames flickered around the logs changing the brown wood to black.  In the heart of the fire, the blanket noticed embers glowing red. Occasionally an ember would pop up into the air, shining brightly for a split second, then it would drop back down turning into a fleck of ash.

As Bliss the blanket delighted in the fire’s movements, the little girl made her way to the couch and settled in with a pile of books.  The blanket smiled, ready to read and snuggle.  Bliss felt surprised when the little girl opened the first book and left her blanket neatly folded.

  • 573. Springtime Supplies: a mindful kids’ story
Harmony Helicopter helps make a special delivery as she and all of Ahway Island enjoy the coming of springtime.
    Narrator: Male

    Story Begins: 4:34
    Springtime Supplies Excerpt:

It was a bright, sunny day in late winter on Ahway Island. The birds were flying high in the big blue sky; the wind underneath their wings feeling refreshingly brisk and cool. There was still a chill in the air, but it was the warmest day of the year so far. The big fluffy clouds were a crisp white. Harmony Helicopter sat on her landing pad at the Ahway Island Airport, quietly watching the sky. Harmony was waiting for her pilot to arrive so that they could go flying. They hadn’t been flying so much over the last few months due to the winter weather, so Harmony was excited by the prospect of today’s flight.

Harmony loved flying, especially on sunny days like these – days when she would get to see Ahway Island’s evergreen trees, winding roads, and magnificent ocean in all their glory. She enjoyed gazing down on all of the places that made Ahway Island such a wonderful home for Harmony and her friends. The anticipation of seeing the wonderful places on Ahway Island today made Harmony feel happy and excited.

Just then, Harmony heard her pilot approaching.

After teasing Ellie and Danny about their fantastic friend, Dragon comes out of the forest to meet Dizzy and Ronald.
Hello everyone!  We hope you enjoyed our new story this week. Now, welcome to Favorite Friday! Sometimes we like to listen to our favorites again. Please enjoy “A Fantastic Friend” and we’ll be back with a new story on Monday!
    Narrator: Female

    Story Begins: 8:45

    A Fantastic Friend Excerpt:
Sunshine spilled into the garage where Ellie the excavator rested.  She awoke hoping that today the dragon would come for another visit.  Ellie had mentioned the dragon to Dizzy the concrete mixer and Ronald the roller. Even though Danny the dump truck had said that he had seen the dragon too, Dizzy and Ronald assumed it was a joke that the Danny and Ellie was playing on them.  The little excavator rolled out into the circle and gazed at the forest.  Danny drove over to her and asked. “Are you watching for the dragon?”

    “I am.” Ellie replied.

“I hope the dragon comes back soon.  I’m tired of Ronald and Dizzy laughing at us.”

Danny joined her in watching the forest, as Ronald and Dizzy rolled over to them.

The concrete mixer said, “I can’t believe you’re still trying that.  It’s not going to work. We know that there’s no dragon.”

  • 570. Hear Me Roar!: a children’s bedtime story and meditation
Leroy Lion practices roaring with the help of his friend Hana Hyena and learns that you don't have to be loud to be brave.
    Narrator: Male

    Story Begins: 4:37
    Hear Me Roar! Excerpt:

On a bright afternoon in the Ahway Island Animal Sanctuary, Leroy Lion leapt out of his cave, heading out into the grassy plains. He was going out today to practice being just like his dad. Leroy’s dad was very strong and brave. He had a very loud roar – one of the loudest roars in the whole world, Leroy believed. Leroy wanted to be just as brave and strong and loud as his dad.

Leroy knew he’d have to practice his roar a lot. He wanted his new, loud roar to be a big surprise for his dad. So in the afternoons, every day, Leroy traveled out from the family cave to a special spot to be alone and practice his mighty roar.

Today, Leroy weaved through the tall grasses of the plains to get to his special practice spot. He took the same path so often that the grass was starting to bend to form a path for him to walk through.

    Caring Crew Excerpt:
The sun slowly rose, filling the enchanted forest with light and waking the sleepy animals.  After the dragon’s Thankful Party, all the animals felt grateful for their home, and all their friends, especially the dragon.  Rebel the Raccoon wondered what they could do to show the dragon their appreciation.  Then he realized, the dragon’s cave might be a bit of a mess after such a big party.  Rebel had an idea! “Riley, Rob!” he called “Would you like to help me clean the dragon’s cave?”

“What a great idea!” Riley said.

“I was trying to think of a way that we could say thank you to the dragon too!” Rob replied.

“Great!” Rebel said, “I’ll tell the birds. Riley, do you want to tell the squirrels? Rob, can you spread the word to the bunnies?”

“Sure! And we’ll let any animals we meet along the way know what we’re doing.” The raccoons replied.  Off they went spreading word throughout the forest that today they would  help the dragon clean. First Rebel had a very special recruit in mind.  The clever raccoon climbed up Odin the Owl’s tree and knocked politely.  The wise owl emerged and gave Rebel a questioning look.

Henrietta Hippo, Giselle Giraffe, and Oliver Elephant go for a walk and each use their special abilities to help each other have a good time.
    Narrator: Female

    Story Begins: 4:09
    I Can Help Excerpt:

It was a beautiful autumn afternoon at the Ahway Island Animal Sanctuary where  Henrietta Hippo patiently waited under the big maple tree near the pond she called home. The tree above her was covered with bright red leaves. As Henrietta  waited, she paced around the tree, staring up into the branches. Autumn was Henrietta’s favorite season because the leaves on the trees turned all sorts of pretty colors like yellow, orange, and red.

As Henrietta gazed at the tree, enjoying the beautiful sight, she heard her name being called.

“We’re here, Henrietta!” Giselle Giraffe called out, trotting closer to the tree. Oliver Elephant followed just behind her.

    Dragon Party Excerpt:
The sun peaked through the early morning darkness, lighting up the enchanted forest.  The clever dragon had settled down for the night facing the entrance of the cave, so that as soon as the sun appeared, it would wake up.

The dragon smiled as the first bit of sunlight warmed its nose, and then yawned and stretched. It worked! The dragon had wakened with the sun.  Today the dragon needed every minute. It was going to be a busy day getting ready for the Thankful Party!

The dragon quickly hopped out of bed and placed some nice dry logs in the fire place. Then with a deep dragon breath in and out  the dragon set the logs ablaze.  Now the cave would be nice and cozy for the festivities.  For the next errand, the dragon headed into the forest to get food and drinks for the party guests.

First, the dragon found the fresh spring water and carried the rock bucket, filled to the top back to the cave. The dragon set several dishes on the floor and carefully poured the cool spring water into each dish.  Now the animals had refreshing water to sip when they felt thirsty.

Bianca Polar Bear feels bored but her friend Beau Beluga helps her have a better day.
    Narrator: Male

    Story Begins: 4:30
    A Better Day Excerpt:

It was a grey and breezy day. The wind blew all around the white snow on the Northern part of Ahway Island. The only animal to be seen outside in the blanket of white snow was Bianca Polar Bear. Bianca walked slowly around, occasionally kicking up the powdery snow that fell back to the ground like tiny bits of sugar.

Usually, Bianca would jump and play in the snow but today Bianca felt bored. She wasn’t sure why, but she just didn’t know what she wanted to do today. She sat in her den for a while, trying to take a nice, relaxing nap, but she felt restless. Usually, Bianca was very good at entertaining herself. She would play with the penguins on the ice or in the snow by herself. She even enjoyed housework: she especially liked to dig out her den whenever the wind blew too much snow around it. But today, Bianca didn’t feel like doing any of those things.

    Lights Out! Excerpt:
Wind whistled around the house as Theresa gazed at the sunset through the window.  She felt amazed by the beauty of the changing colors. The sun was now a deep red, about to disappear until tomorrow morning.  As she watched the scattered clouds changed from white to pink and now were beginning to fade against the dark blue sky.

The moon grew brighter, and then all she saw was the reflection of the room behind her.  Theresa turned to say something and saw her big brother Joe resting on the couch, holding a book.  He had turned on the light so he could continue reading.  Oh well, Theresa could find another spot to look at the stars.

Joe hadn’t noticed his sister’s reaction.  He was captivated by his book. Joe had continued to read as he fumbled for the light.  Now completely engaged in the story, Joe barely noticed the light flicker as the wind rattled the windows.  Then it happened.

The lights went out!  Joe closed his book with a thump and a deep sigh feeling frustrated.
