Join Jill this week as she discusses the upcoming Be YOU event called "Be You Live" which is celebrating its five-year anniversary and 300th episode! Jill acknowledges that this event may not be for everyone, as our nervous systems can sometimes try to prevent us from doing things that will expand and challenge us, but she encourages listeners to truly listen to their intuition to determine if this event is right for them in spite of any doubts or excuses their mind may come up with.

Jill also spends time this episode discussing her perspective on true friendship, describing the type of deep, authentic friendships that she has built upon – ones in which there is radical honesty, vulnerability, and a willingness to challenge each other to grow – and she contrasts this with more surface-level friendships that avoid difficult conversations. Jill shares her own experience of having to have a "clearing conversation" with someone she cares about but ultimately having realized that they were not meant to be close friends. She highlights the importance of shedding relationships that no longer serve us but doing so with self-compassion rather than judgment.

Jill ultimately encourages listeners to reflect on the quality of your own friendships and your relationships with yourselves, suggesting journaling, self-reflection, and allowing yourselves to fully feel emotions as ways to pave the way for the type of meaningful connections she talks about in this episode, believing that when we can be that kind of friend to ourselves, we will attract those kinds of friendships with others!

    Show Notes:

[04:35] - She challenges the idea that self-sacrifice is noble and insists that true belonging comes from being yourself.

[18:25] - True friendships, Jill insists, honor authenticity and the highest self, not old wounds from childhood trauma.

The clock is ticking - the Be You celebratory event is just over a month away on October 25th in Fort Wayne, Indiana! Jill is so excited but also feeling the pressure of planning this large event on her own, and she shares that she's learned some valuable lessons, such as how it's okay to jump in even if you haven't spent much time in the "kiddie pool" before.

Jill is asking for help from her listeners, inviting a select group of her most dedicated podcast fans to a special birthday celebration dinner for the 5-year anniversary of the Be You podcast. To be considered, listeners should email Jill and share the impact the podcast has had on them. She is asking listeners to record a short video talking about how the podcast has made a difference, which she plans to use at the event and for other promotions.

The event itself promises to be an expansive experience, not a deep transformational one. Jill states that attendees will be beautifully reminded of not just who you are, but how freaking amazing you really are, and topics will include people-pleasing, perfectionism, comparison, and the connection between our inner selves and our leadership/work lives.

While Jill highlights the fact that this event is not a necessity, it is an opportunity for those who feel called to it, and she encourages listeners to say yes to themselves and invest in their own growth while also honoring that the decision is a personal one without pressure!

Listen in to Jill this week as she opens up by sharing her personal experience with the "11-11-11 Compliment Experience" that she invited her listeners to try in the last couple of episodes, reflecting on how it was initially difficult but became easier over time. She then transitions into a major decision that she has faced - the opportunity to start a new brick-and-mortar business venture that felt aligned and exciting but that ultimately had to be turned down. Hear how, through a powerful moment of self-reflection, Jill realized this new business would be a distraction from her true purpose - to write a book that has been on her heart for years.

Jill reflects on how she surrendered the business opportunity and trusted that if it was meant to be, it would flow easily. Shortly after, she had a profound realization while re-reading one of her own past writings - that the book she has been struggling with is her true calling and dharma, and she ultimately made the difficult decision to forgo the business venture for the time being in order to focus on completing this book.

Jill encourages listeners to examine their own lives and identify any "perfect" opportunities that may actually be distractions from their higher purpose. She challenges listeners to be willing to choose the uncomfortable, uncertain path that aligns with their true north even if it means going against what seems logical or guaranteed. Jill also, of course, reminds listeners to attend her upcoming Be YOU event in October where she believes profound change will take place!

  • 290 - 11-11-11 Challenge Starts Today! Are You In?

Join Jill for the five-year anniversary of Be YOU - a special live podcast event celebrating 300 episodes of the podcast - on Saturday, October 25th from 1–5 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Tickets are selling fast at jillherman.com/beyou, and discounted rooms are available at a boutique hotel right next door!

In her last episode, Jill filled listeners in on her upcoming 11-11-11 challenge - to give 11 genuine compliments to 11 different people over the course of 11 consecutive days, beginning on August 11th! This experiment, as Jill stresses, isn't just about being kind or spreading positivity but is rather a close look at how we relate to self-worth, validation, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and our resistance to both giving and receiving, especially as women.

Jill explains how the true purpose of this experiment is not to "get it right" but rather to pay attention. What happens inside when you fall short of the goal, when a compliment is ignored, when it's received too enthusiastically and you find yourself craving that response again? This episode gives you permission to not only participate imperfectly but to also allow the imperfection to teach you something.

Whether you're someone who finds it hard to say kind things about yourself, someone who hands out compliments to stay safe, or someone who rebels against rules altogether, Jill invites you to feel into what's true for you. She encourages slowing down, tuning into your body, and exploring the emotions that come up from beneath the surface of what seems like a simple act, and she would love for you to reach out to share what you notice!

This isn't homework. It's not a performance. It's an invitation to pay attention to your nervous system, your patterns, and the stories which you tell yourself about worth and connection. Above all, it's a chance to practice being more present and more real!

Tickets are selling fast at jillherman.com/beyou, and discounted rooms are available at a boutique hotel right next door!

Listen in this week as Jill proposes a challenge for listeners - to give 11 genuine compliments to 11 different people over the course of 11 consecutive days, beginning on August 11th! She notes that so many people struggle to give sincere compliments, often defaulting to insincere ones, so the challenge is intended to push listeners to be more present, observant, and generous with their praise of others.

While Jill acknowledges that this can initially feel uncomfortable and/or vulnerable at first, she encourages listeners to step outside of their comfort zones and to push past those feelings, outlining some steps to help prepare such as taking time for self-reflection and self-compliments each day before giving them to others.

Jill also suggests that going through this process of intentionally complimenting others can be eye-opening and transformative and may even reveal things about yourself, your relationships with others, and/or the general social dynamic of withholding genuine praise. She is really excited about this challenge and invites you to listen in for more details! We could all use a little personal growth, increased mindfulness, and social connection after all!

  • 287 - Pruning Your Plants AND Your Life

Join Jill for the five-year anniversary of Be YOU - a special live podcast event celebrating 300 episodes of the podcast - on Saturday, October 25th from 1–5 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Tickets are selling fast at jillherman.com/beyou, and discounted rooms are available at a boutique hotel right next door!

Jill spends time this week exploring over-giving and the importance of pruning relationships and commitments in your life, sharing personal experiences when she realized that she had been giving too much of herself to certain people and businesses without receiving the same level of attention in return. She likens this idea to tending a garden when she had neglected her own container garden and allowed it to become overgrown. Just as the flowers were "begging to be pruned," she realized that in her own life, certain relationships and obligations were draining her energy.

Jill shares examples of reaching out to a business only to be disappointed when they declined to sponsor her event, and she reflects on family relationships in which she felt the giving was one-sided. In these cases, she decided that it was time to cut away the excess and focus her time and energy on more reciprocal relationships. On the other hand, though, she also shares a story of a friendship in which she initially felt hurt by a lack of reciprocation, but upon further reflection, she realized that her friend was actually kind in other ways. This realization allowed her to let go of the resentment and appreciate the relationship for what it was.

Ultimately, Jill is discussing the importance of self-care and being more particular with your time and energy, encouraging listeners to take inventory of their relationships and commitments and to have the courage to prune away the ones that are draining rather than nourishing. She suggests this can be a powerful act of self-love and kindness, allowing you to show up more fully for the people who truly matter!

    Show Notes:

[01:29] - Even though giving feels natural and joyful, Jill has realized that it's quietly draining when rarely reciprocated. [05:30] - Jill reflects on how it hurt when generosity wasn't returned, revealing that she subconsciously hoped for appreciation in exchange. [07:15] - Eventually, even pure-hearted giving begs the question: will they ever give back? [09:12] - Jill admits to having misjudged one friend and also finally stopped chasing a family member. [11:12] - Support can come from surprising places, like a childhood friend who buys ten VIP tickets. [12:56] - After giving a company $200K in business, their refusal to sponsor Jill truly stung. [15:29] - After some deep reflection, Jill chose to stop supporting those who never truly showed up in return. [17:25] - Without pruning, everything weakens, and offshoots drain the flowers just like distractions drain us. [19:57] - Jill argues that by trimming relationships and distractions, we protect our energy and grow into our full potential. [22:28] - Sometimes, the kindest thing that you can do is to unapologetically withdraw. [24:23] - True self-honesty means examining everything (relationships, habits, even screen time) and deciding on what needs to go. [25:20] - Don't forget about the upcoming Be YOU event in October!
