  • Ep52 - ABA is Everywhere (with Sarah "Scho" McFarland)

Do you set boundaries that align with your values?

Do you show up as your authentic self in all environments?

During today’s meal - I speak with a behavior analyst, avid volleyball player, and entrepreneur about using the science of behavior analysis outside of autism services, practicing self care, and being a biracial immigrant and a working mom.

    —

About Sarah "Scho" McFarland, BCBA, COBA

Sarah is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) in the state of Ohio. She has 12 years of experience working in the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA) in various settings, which include residential, hospital/clinic, in-home, community and schools.

During these past 12 years, her main areas of focus have included reduction of moderate to severe interfering behaviors,  crisis intervention (ie. training on de-escalation, behavior management & crisis management), skill based treatment, caregiver and staff training, and collaboration with other service providers.

She also has over 15 years experience as a volleyball coach and trainer (middle school, high school, Junior Olympic/club levels), a journey she began and fell in love with during her collegiate volleyball career.

  • Ep51 - Fluidity in Practice (with Ann-Marie Donovan)

Do you tend to stick to the black & white rules, or dive into the greyscale?

How often do you explore the cultural differences and similarities at work?

During today’s meal - I speak with a behavior analyst about her journey to ABA, which brought her all over the world. We also discuss being flexible, leaning into the gray areas, local traditions, and soup!

    —

About Ann-Marie Donovan, M.Sc., BCBA, LBA, IBAO

Ann-Marie’s journey began in 2004 at a special needs summer camp in New Hampshire, where she discovered the joy and responsibility of working with individuals with additional needs. The camp director’s question, “How do you know your camper had the best time of their year?” sparked her passion for making a positive impact and the importance of fun.

After that initial summer she returned to Ireland and became a tutor in an ABA pilot school. She was back and forth between the US and Ireland for several years. She spent her time juggling roles in, in-home ABA programs, hospitals, and schools and the camp that started her career all while completing her master’s degree from Simmons College in Boston. In 2009, she proudly added a Master of Science in Behavior Analysis and a BCBA certification to her achievements.

Her adventure continued as the Director of an ABA pilot school in Ireland, then her adventures took her to Bahrain as the Director of an ABA clinic. It was there she met her husband, an Alabama native with the United States Coast Guard. They returned to the US in 2017, and Ann-Marie has been learning and leading as best she can since that time.

Her hardest and most rewarding role to date is being Mom to twin girls (7) and an almost 5-year-old boy who have completely reshaped Ann-Marie’s perspective on many things, including how she practices.

Ann-Marie’s journey is all about connection and mentorship. She believes that the secret sauce to meaningful progress is building strong relationships. With a blend of evidence-based practices and a sprinkle of fun, she attempts to create an environment where progress is celebrated, mistakes are embraced as learning opportunities, relationships flourish, and learning never stops.

  • Ep46 - Lit Up (with Iveth Aguilar)

    Is burnout just a buzzword?

Is there such a thing as work-life balance?

During today’s meal - I speak with a passionate behavior analyst and burnout coach about the importance of antecedent strategies to process big emotions, how to empower BCBAs, and listening to our bodies.

    —

About Iveth Aguilar, MS, BCBA, Burnout Recovery and Prevention Coach

Iveth (she/her) is a dedicated and innovative Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), Burnout Coach, and speaker who specializes in helping behavior analysts achieve work-life balance. Iveth has been in the ABA field since 2018 and earned her BCBA certification in 2020.

After experiencing her own burnout as a BCBA, Iveth founded Empowered Behavior Coaching and created the "From Burnt-Out to Lit Up" program, a 4-month coaching experience for burnt-out behavior analysts. Her approach goes deep to uncover the fears behind perfectionism, overcommitting, and lack of boundary-setting behaviors that often lead to burnout. With training in somatic work, she integrates nervous system regulation through movement into her practice to address stress.

In addition to coaching, Iveth leads Empowered Behavior Women, a free community for BCBAs and aspiring BCBAs focused on connection, well-being, and exploring alternative ABA career paths. She also provides burnout prevention and recovery workshops for ABA companies to ensure they are making efforts to prevent burnout organization-wide.

Iveth’s mission is to empower behavior analysts to overcome burnout, merge their unique passions with ABA, and find work environments that light them up!

  • Ep45 - Empowering Parents (with Michael Reynolds Jr)

Are you more of a speak only when necessary or a nonstop talker?

Is it more important to be liked or to be authentic?

During today’s meal - I speak with a dedicated behavior analyst who specializes in parent training about being authentic, those ah-ha moments with clients and families, and using your PTO.

    —

About Michael Reynolds Jr, MS BCBA LBA

Since 2013, I’ve been providing direct ABA services to families and clients affected by Autism and related disorders in both clinical and administrative settings. Throughout the years I have acquired a Master's level education in Psychology (MS), specializing in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) while also obtaining my Board Certification as a Behavior Analyst (BCBA) as well as a Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA).

During the chaos of 2020, I was motivated to start The Parent Trap as I noticed the glaring deficits and gaps in the parent training model utilized within ABA therapy. The vision of this company is to empower parents and caregivers throughout their ABA journey.

I have guided families from their initial intakes and assessments and lead them to the point of graduation of ABA services entirely. With the knowledge and experience I have attained, I am able to pinpoint and focus on the exact issues and barriers caregivers might be facing with their children on a daily basis. By delivering honest feedback, relatable topics, and practical examples, I aim to ensure the success of each and every client serviced.
