There's a spectre of conversion therapy as an aggressive hateful practice that groups and governments are moving to ban in many places across Canada. But this therapy can be more insidious than it appears on the surface, which makes it impossible to regulate and raises complicated questions.

How do you ban a practice that is often asked for freely by adults seeking help? If your community has spent years convincing you your sexuality is shameful, until you ask for help to change it... is that really consensual? If the patients are adults, the conversations are private, no medicine is involved and no money is changing hands, how exactly is the government supposed to find and stop it? And what happens when you call one of these places and ask for therapy?
