Have you just found out that your spouse has been unfaithful to you? Or, have your own secret sexual choices just been discovered?
Whichever side of this painful discovery you find yourself, your mind is racing with the same terrifying questions: Now what? Where do we go from here? Is our marriage over?
The truth is hard to swallow: Yes, the marriage you had is dead.
Facing life after infidelity means stepping onto a path you never asked for, never anticipated, and don’t know how to navigate.
The fear is real, the confusion is overwhelming, and the security you built your life upon feels completely shattered.
The old normal cannot be salvaged, and trying to patch up the rubble on your own will only lead to further heartbreak.
In this episode, we pull back the curtain on an early discovery story from our own marriage. We reveal the devastating mistake we made—sweeping the truth under the rug without qualified help, leaving an unexploded fuse that detonated years later.
You cannot navigate the fallout of sexual betrayal alone. Hit play to trade panic for direction and find your footing in the middle of the storm.
We pray this blesses you!
Johnny and Emily

Recovery is not a straight line, and hitting an unexpected landmine years down the road can feel like falling all the way back to day one. Recording from our anniversary trip, we unpack a sudden trigger that hit Emily in a hotel pool, dragging up painful memories of the past and the heavy reality of betrayal trauma.
Instead of old patterns taking over—withdrawal, defensiveness, or panic—this moment became a test of the tools we’ve fought to build. Emily shares what it looked like to reach for Johnny rather than pull away, and how staying connected in the middle of the wave changed everything.
Johnny breaks down the vital shift from defensive reaction to grounded, empathetic listening, offering the reassurance and space Emily needed to let the grief move through them instead of tearing them apart.
Triggers aren't proof that healing failed; they are flashing lights pointing to the exact spots still asking for grace. Tune in to hear how faith, community, and relentless honesty turn unexpected pain into deeper intimacy.
We pray this blesses you,
Johnny and Emily

Geography holds memory—and for couples healing from sexual betrayal, certain places can feel like emotional minefields.
Eight years after Discovery Day, we returned to a beach tied to some of the most painful pre-D-Day memories of our marriage.
We didn't go back to pretend the past never happened; we went to reclaim the ground. But stepping onto that sand meant facing the reality of the setting: the ocean breeze, the crowds, and women in bikinis walking right across our path.
In earlier days, that scenario would have sparked silence, panic, hyper-vigilance, and quiet dread. Instead, we took an early morning walk and did something radically different—we talked through our vigilance plan out loud, in real time.
In this episode, we share the raw, honest conversation we had on that shoreline and unpack a critical truth for couples in recovery: in the real world, simply seeing someone does not mean a husband has failed. Recovery isn't about avoiding sightlines—it’s about the choice that happens after the seeing.
If you’ve ever dreaded a vacation, a summer trip, or just walking down a crowded street with your spouse, this episode will show you how to move from walking on eggshells (or seashells) to standing on solid, peaceful ground.
We pray this blesses you,
Johnny and Emily

Before packing our bags for our wedding anniversary trip to intentionally reclaim and redeem a beach tied to pre-D-Day memories, we sat down for a raw, foundational conversation with returning guest Heather O’Brien.
If you have spent months or years in betrayal recovery, you know how exhausting it is to manage the daily fallout. The anxiety spikes, the sudden triggers, the paralyzing shame, the defensiveness—it’s easy to spend all your energy playing defense against the symptoms without ever understanding the deeper spiritual and emotional dynamics driving them.
Heather O’Brien, licensed minister and author of the new training manual Heal With God, joins us to break that cycle. Heather pulls no punches about why traditional advice often leaves believers stuck in a loop of shame, unforgiveness, and fear. Instead of managing behavioral fallout, Heather outlines a Spirit-led process of asking God curious questions, exposing the toxic internal agreements we’ve made, and taking healing one specific root at a time.
Whether you are wrestling with hidden bitterness, suffocating self-protection, or the lie that you have to fix everything all at once, this episode offers a practical, grounded roadmap to hearing God's voice in your deepest wounds.
We pray this blesses you,
Johnny and Emily

True healing cannot take root in the shadows of half-truths. In this deeply candid episode of Beyond Broken Vows, we open the door to Johnny’s personal Sex Addicts Anonymous (SAA) 12-step presentation, offering an unsparing look at the destructive path of sexual addiction and the transformative power of rigorous, Christ-centered recovery.
Johnny retraces the roots of his brokenness back to his family of origin. Marked by early abuse, emotional distance, and painful rejection wounds in his school years, he turned to pornography at an early age as a false refuge. Though he attempted to manage the behavior, old patterns resurfaced with force during his service in the Navy.
What followed was a devastating cycle of hidden pornography use, compulsive fantasy, and multiple affairs. The secrecy eventually shattered under the weight of discovery, followed by an initial, poorly handled disclosure that compounded Emily's trauma and laid bare the full extent of the wreckage.
Facing the reality of his destructive choices, Johnny entered SAA in 2019 to confront the root of his sin. Working the twelve steps forced him to see past the outward acting out to the real engine driving it: a heart sick with objectification and an insatiable need for attention and approval. True freedom required tearing down that idolatry through radical surrender, thorough amends, rigorous daily inventory, disciplined prayer, and a life turned outward in service to others.
Johnny shares where that difficult road has led, including his "Dayenu" declaration of gratitude for God's sustaining grace and the enduring challenge of Matthew 25:21 to remain faithful in the small, daily choices of obedience. This episode is an urgent reminder that while the journey through betrayal trauma is grueling, a marriage and a man can be redeemed when truth is faced without excuses.
Listen in to hear the full story, and learn how to get connected with coaching resources and our Christ-centered men’s recovery group.
We pray this blesses you,
Johnny and Emily

“Why do I have to share my location, hand over my phone, and check in constantly, while my spouse doesn’t have to do any of that?”
If you have wrestled with the frustration of accountability rules that feel completely one-sided, this conversation is for you.
In this episode, we tackle the reality of double standards after sexual betrayal—why they exist, why they are necessary, and how to navigate them without letting bitterness destroy your progress.
God designed marriage to operate on equal footing, but betrayal instantly upsets that balance. Whether it is porn, emotional connections, or physical infidelity, the hidden defect of entitlement quietly tips the scales.
When the truth comes to light, everything changes.
The unfaithful spouse must naturally carry the lion’s share of rebuilding trust, which means agreeing to rigorous scrutiny through device tracking, transparent communication, location sharing, and strict travel safety boundaries.
Living under rules that only apply to one person can easily breed resentment and hard feelings.
Johnny opens up about his own struggle with this dynamic and reveals the powerful mindset shift that changed everything: replacing “Why me?” with deep gratitude that Emily chose to stay and fight for the marriage.
When you view boundaries not as a prison sentence, but as the proving ground to demonstrate genuine trustworthiness, the road to lasting restoration truly begins.
“Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.”
1 Corinthians 4:2

There is a common misunderstanding that recovery is a mountain to be climbed—a series of steps, chapters, or weeks that, once completed, allow you to finally stand at the summit and call the work “finished.”
But if you have spent your time checking the boxes of a recovery program only to find that the peace you promised your spouse hasn’t yet taken root, you are not alone.
In this episode, we sit down to discuss the critical, often-overlooked reality that finishing a program is not the end of the road; it is the beginning of the daily life of recovery.
Johnny shares his own journey through the wreckage of porn addiction and adultery, detailing the long road that led to seven years of sobriety. He unpacks the fundamental difference between sobriety—the mere absence of a behavior—and true recovery, which is a life transformed by the daily, intentional application of the work.
We address the husbands who feel they have done enough, and the wives who are still waiting to see the fruit of that work.
Recovery is not a curriculum to be mastered; it is a lifestyle of surrender, honesty, and daily practice that must be lived out in the smallest moments of every day.
Our conversation moves into the “how” of this daily surrender. We outline what it means to truly “work your program” by applying tools like the HALT-BS acronym, the art of naming emotions, and the discipline of making constant corrections and amends.
This isn’t about striving for perfection, but about filling the voids in your life with the Holy Spirit rather than old coping mechanisms.
If you are stuck in the cycle of “doing the work” without seeing the change, this episode offers a roadmap for moving from theoretical knowledge to a living, breathing reality of integrity and healing.
For those seeking to bridge the gap between their current situation and the life of integrity they desire, Johnny offers specialized coaching for men struggling with addiction. You can find more information on his coaching practice, along with resources and tools to help you work your program, through the links below.
We pray this blesses you,
Johnny and Emily

In this episode of Beyond Broken Vows, we get real about “rupture and repair”—because let’s face it, every marriage hits those moments where things fall apart.
We’re not talking about the big blow-ups that get all the attention; we’re talking about those quieter breaks in connection that happen after infidelity, when a simple misunderstanding or a triggered memory sends one of you reeling.
We dig into why it’s so important to address every rupture quickly, and how both spouses need to examine their exact role in it—without pointing fingers.
We walk through four root responses we all default to and we give you actual sample statements for both the initiator and the responder, because humility isn’t just a nice idea—it’s the key that unlocks real healing.
You’re not alone in this struggle so grab something to takes notes with and join us today to get some insights and encouragement for your healing journey.
We pray this blesses you,
Johnny and Emily
