Welcome to Flash Back Friday! With 600+ episodes, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with our new listeners (and maybe new to our regular listeners).

In this FBF, we're headed back to early 2021 to the Sundance Film Festival talking with  Emmy-winning director Lucy Walker about her film Bring Your Own Brigade. Lucy shares her journey digging into the complicated history of California wildfires in her documentary (spoiler alert: we can't blame everything on global warming).  Bring Your Own Brigade is timely as fire season  has officially started in California and while this is an examination about the 2018 Paradise and Malibu fires - all of the investigation and reporting that Lucy shares in this film could make a difference now if we all take action.  We know watching a documentary about wildfires may sound dismal, but believe us, there's so many good nuggets in this film we hope you'll move beyond that and support this film and filmmaker.  Climate change is here but we can do something about it.

Director Abby Ginzberg is giving us life in episode 602 of the podcast. Abby is the director of the upcoming documentary Barbara Lee: Speaking Truth To Power and the film couldn't come at a better time.  Barbara Lee is a force to be reckon with - she was fighting for human rights as early as high school when she fought for herself and others, while working with the NAACP, to be considered for the cheerleading squad - not just the white, blue-eyed, blonde girls.

As a single mother Congresswoman Barbara Lee attended Mills College in Oakland, Ca. and received her Masters of Social Work from University of California, Berkeley - all the while volunteering with the Black Panther party and then working on Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm's historic presidential campaign. As timely as it is right now, Congresswoman Barbara Lee was the lone NO vote to authorize the President the use of military force in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. Barbara Lee believed that the authorization would become a blank check for an endless war - HAVE YOU READ THE NEWS THIS WEEK?!

Congresswoman Lee's moral character and values have led her impeccable career in U.S. politics and we're so inspired by her story. We're glad that Abby pursued this story of Barbara Lee and hope you see Barbara Lee: Speaking Truth To Power when it comes out in theaters and streaming platforms August 20. Support women in film. Hello! You've reached episode 601!! In this episode, host Erin Lim talks with Respect director Liesl Tommy about this major motion picture that tells the traumatic younger years of the Queen of Soul - Aretha Franklin. Aretha's young life was fraught with death, rape, as well as controlling, toxic men. Director Liesel Tommy wanted to tell that part of Aretha's herstory which is exactly what she does with a thoughtful eye on balancing all of the beauty and horrors of Aretha's life.

This was Liesl Tommy's first feature film and she had to fight for a lot of the scenes you will see when you watch Respect. We're so glad that she did and we're also happy about the attention she paid to Aretha's time spent in Muscle Shoals at the famous FAME studios where she recorded her first big hit I Never Loved A Man The Way That I Love You.  Erin and Liesl talk about the choice of using the  b.roll from Martin Luther King's funeral (Aretha was friends and worked with the Reverend), her father's famous parties which included folks like Smokey Robinson who is brilliantly played by actor Lodric D. Collins, and working with the exceptional Kris Bowers who scores the film. Psst, Kris was on our show earlier this year talking about his short film - A Concerto is a Conversation.  There's so much to talk about including the costumes (leopard print caftan y'all!) plus hair and makeup so let's go!

Respect is in theaters NOW.

Coming all the way live from Top Chef's Nelson German's restaurant alaMar Kitchen and Bar in downtown Oakland AND from the season finale premiere of the Blindspotting TV show we are bringing you our 600th episode! The working title was "24 hour, whirlwind 600th episode extravaganza" if you wanted the inside scoop. Ange, aka Captain Party flew up Sunday morning from L.A. to join the Bitch Talk team to enjoy a beautiful seafood dinner from future guest, Top Chef's season 18 Chef Nelson German (psst....get the shrimp taco's, oysters, and peel-n-eat shrimp!) and to help co-host the in person (all vaxxed of course!) Blindspotting TV season finale cause we had to make it happen.

In this episode you're gonna hear from us,  Blindspotting creator/showrunner/director/actor Rafael Casal, creator/exec. producer Daveed Diggs, actor Margo Hall, and screenwriter Alanna Brown. It was a privilege to not only see these folks in person but to be in an intimate setting with their loved ones, homies, and other cast members. Shout out to Sam - she's the magician behind the event and is a fan of Bitch Talk. Thanks SAM!! And shout out to the Chabot Space and Science Center for the event accommodations. It's a wrap on season one of the Blindspotting tv show (you can watch the whole season right now on STARZ), and we're capping off our celebration with actor and singer, April Absynth! We last spoke with her in May for her starring role in Lumpia with a Vengeance, and this time around she's playing a completely different character that we instantly fell in love with, Jacque.  We get into why this character needed to be Filipina, the importance and responsibility she felt to represent for the AAPI community, her family's reaction to her being half naked on screen, the oversexualization of women in Hollywood (and how Blindspotting is changing the game for women actors), and how her hard work and dedication resulted in her character becoming a series regular. She also shares why she became a singer and how music has helped her heal. She is truly a pleasure to speak with, and she doesn't mind us calling her our #HotCousin. That means we are best friends forever.

Did y'all watch the final episode of Blindspotting on Starz last night?! If you did - CAN WE TALK? If you didn't, hurry up already. Our guest in this episode, Benjamin Earl Turner plays the loveable next door neighbor parolee Earl and we were so excited to welcome him to Bitch Talk. Not only is Benjamin a talented actor, he's a musician, and spoken word artist and met Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal when he was a youngster in the Bay. We talk with Benjamin about acting for the first time, if he's a shaman, knowing folks in the prison system, his new album (Selling Air - out now!), burritos,  and of course about Blindspotting. Y'all gotta watch out for this guy - he's a quiet force to be reckon with and we're so down for it. Thanks for listening!

Welcome to Flash Back Friday! With 500+ episodes, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with our new listeners (and maybe new to our regular listeners).

In honor of the season finale of Blindspotting (this Sunday 8/8 on STARZ), we're sharing an interview we did with the co-creator, showrunner, actor (and East Bay native!) - Rafael Casal! We got to catch up with him about the season 1 spin off series of the film with the same name, the importance of an equitable writers room, shooting in Oakland, filming  during a pandemic, power structures on set, and working in choreography into a television dramedy.  Plus we talk about the cast which is phenomenal...HELLO, Helen Hunt is a goddamn cast member - DUH.

It's been cool to see how one of our favorite films about Oakland and the Bay get to see a longer shelf life and turn itself into an episodic series to reach more folks. We're also stoked to continue our podcast relationship with Rafa. It's always a joy to have him on the show.

In honor of the season finale of the Blindspotting spinoff (airing this Sunday, August 8th on Starz), we're bringing you a series of interviews with some of out favorite cast members! Candance Nicholas-Lippman plays Janelle, the best friend everyone needs in their lives. And Candace, in real life, is no different! We get into how she manifested her role in this show, the importance of being able to collaborate with the show's creators to make this character authentic, her spoken word poetry, and what it was like to run naked on a freezing San Francisco beach. She's a ball of energy and inspiration, and we CANNOT wait to have her back on the show! This is a fun one, enjoy!

You can watch Blindspotting right now on Starz, and don't forget to tune in for the season finale on Sunday 8/8!

We are very excited to welcome the very talented Sonia Kennebeck back to the show to talk about her film Enemies of the State.  It's the true story of Matt DeHart who believes that he is being targeted by the U.S. government for having confidential documents alleging misconduct by the CIA. The film takes you on the roller coaster ride that Matt and his parents rode as well as the government officials that were (and possibly still are) after him.  Sonia's constant deep dive into how the America government goes after its citizens is mind boggling and her curiosity and deep research into these stories is awe inspiring.

If you didn't catch our first interview with Sonia earlier this year about her film The United States Vs. Reality Winner you can find it here. You can watch Enemies of the State in select theaters and on demand on Amazon Prime, Google Plus, and Vudu.
