Dave wrote his book at the behest of many of my civilian friends with whom he had told these stories and also for himself. He has been involved in some of the biggest news stories in Australia including his role in the evacuation of Australian nationals from Bali after the Bali Bombings, to commanding a group of medical specialists and sailors who deployed with the US Navy during humanitarian missions to the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean.

This book also covers Dave’s diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Prostate cancer which basically ended his career.  You can find out more about Dave Lassam Lieutenant Commander, RAN (Ret) and his book Meet Dave Lassam, The Man For the Job: My 39 Years Service in the Royal Australian Navy on Amazon.

  • The Shepherds Of Inequality: And The Futility Of Our Efforts To Stop Them by Dawn Pretorius

The Shepherds of Inequality and the Futility of Our Efforts to Stop Them provides the reader with well-researched information on money-laundering cases that made news in the years from 2017 to 2022. From trafficking people, donkeys, and sand, to ingenious bankers, people in power, and the very rich, a picture emerges of what must be the biggest industry in the world, because ongoing opportunities exist everywhere for anybody.

The world response known as anti-money-laundering legislation is traced to its origin and the measures being taken to combat this scourge. Her findings reveal a bureaucracy of compliance initiatives that cost financial services a lot of money with relatively little success, although well intended. The reasons, the author contends, are that much of the laws relating to tax application, company structures, offshore tax havens, justice systems protecting heads of state, the variety and ease with which money and cryptocurrencies can be moved, and the culture of greed have led to global inequality and undernourished economies.

The world is on the wrong path to minimize money laundering. Find out more and get your copy of The Shepherds of Inequality and the Futility of Our Efforts to Stop Them by Dawn Pretorius on Amazon and wherever books are sold.

NIPPER, Book 1. Summary: It is curious how experience molds our actions, reactions, and expectations of what is to come. This first volume in the trilogy gives an account of how George, the main character, grows up in the safety of a Spartan, but loving home and the freedoms afforded so easily to those who have so little. Part of that growing up is the introduction into the life equation of encounters with girls younger and older. This is the story of how one boy’s opinion was turned, obstacles overcome, and a young man’s expectations were both raised and confounded in equal measure.

MOOSE CONQUERING FEAR, Book 2. Summary: For George, confronting fears was a lifelong skill acquired over many years: taking the knocks, making ill-judged decisions, and not learning from past errors, all served to muddy the waters. Making the harder calls on personal and career transitions seemed to open up a chasm of doubt in his mind, but with the right support and a leap of faith in his own abilities, the challenges that lay ahead of him became as alluring as a late spring sunset after a rain-soaked day. Transitioning life stages is never easy. Fear of failure in your first job and/or first marriage lead to decisions for better or for worse. George took them all.

KNOW YOUR MIND, Book 3. Summary:The third and final part of the trilogy moves on from growing pains in teenage years and confronting fears to exploring the extraordinary relationship between the mind and the body which can help overcome those same pains and fears, culminating in a new philosophical perspective. There was no eureka moment, but a succession of scenarios experienced – some with direct physical impacts, others with more subtle and humorous implications for our mental capacity – that opened a door into another silent reality, where the five senses are muted to allow for a sixth to be awakened.

What began as a collection of thoughts amassed from strangely inexplicable recurrences, evolved through research into wider possibilities of the power of the mind and resulted in our protagonist, George, being astonished by the predictability he found and the calm that these experiences instilled in him.

The author wrote the story as a sort of therapy to help her recover from the loss of Tuesday. Tuesday was not just a dog. She was a companion, a friend, and it turns out, the keeper of so many stories.

Going through all of the photographs the author had taken of the dog let the author relive a series of wonderful memories with Tuesday as the constant thread. Although Tuesday’s time on the Earth was short, she brought so much joy. The author hopes that by sharing that story it will bring some of that joy to you and your child.

The major theme of the lovely book is that pets enhance and make our lives happier and easier. A pet steals your heart and leaves you the better for having known them.

  • The Human Mind: A Psychological View of Theological Concepts by Dr. Eric J. Kolb

In, The Human Mind: A Psychological View of Theological concepts, I compare and contrast the scientific understanding of the human mind with the teaching of the Bible. In some cases, these two perspectives are very similar, such as in various aspects of child development. However, where positive psychology claims that the power to induce change lies within the individual, the Bible teaches that we can do nothing apart from Christ.

The book begins with the concept of belief, upon which the mind develops. Both Christian Theology and scientific psychology agree that one’s beliefs serve as a lens through which reality is perceived; and that humans essentially choose what they want to believe. As such, an individuals’ core beliefs serve as the foundation upon which their mind develops.

This book then outlines the various developmental processes of the human mind. Beginning with what is commonly referred to as the blank slate, through sensory integration and learning, humans first develop a concept of self-awareness and then a theory of mind upon which an individual’s identity is anchored. These developmental processes are discussed and form the framework of our understanding of consciousness. Finally, after establishing the relationship between mind and behavior, this book closes with the contemplation of the nature and development of the mind of Jesus of Nazareth.
