In 1993 reports from India of parents killing their children in public because of social shame related to forbidden marriage began coming to world attention. Admira Ismi (Bosniak) and Boko Brki (Serb) were killed by sniper fire while fleeing the besieged city of Sarejevo on Vrbanja bridge, now known as the ‘Romeo and Juliet Bridge.’ Their bravery ‘became a symbol for the suffering of the people on all sides of the conflict.’

The challenge of young people for rights to options is highlighted by the phenomenon and imperative of romance tragedy within and across cultures. Globalization brings awareness of other cultures: of their legends and real life heroic stories; of their struggles and sacrifices; and of their social progress. This study focuses on the time period from 1993 to the present time during which romance tragedy in India especially, began attracting world attention through the media.

The prime focus of this storyline is in northern India, especially Haryana, in the period 1993 to 2013. However, the issues are discussed in relation to romantic legends and history in a variety of cultures. The second part of the book relates peace-making at a local level to global issues of working for peace.

Reflecting hugely intense joy and sorrow, storytelling of romance tragedy through the arts and media brings compelling heroism to our attention. It leaves us with a message of hope for the new generation.

  • We Will Never Forget by Gennie de Lange

These are the observations of war, seen through the eyes of the Observer, a gentle toy, a mascot, who has accompanied determined men and women, old and young, through the bewildering, realistic experiences of war.

The Observer witnesses the lives of ordinary people, their anguish, camaraderie, and hopes. So their sky, flowers, insects, and people are not forgotten but will survive.

A recent review of We Will Never Forget describes the book as follows: “The horrors of war are often talked about amongst survivors, soldiers, and politicians. The realities of war, as well as the cost both financially and emotionally, are part of the social fabric of our society. For as the old saying goes, war never changes, and it is up to us to find the means of coping with the realities of war and the impact it has on our personal and social lives.

For some people, that means diving into their passions and using creativity to confront the painful moments associated with war. This includes poetry and art, two sides of the same coin, which allows the writer and artist both to express their emotions throughout their life, including the harrowing experiences of war.

That is the concept explored in author Gennie de Lange We Will Never Forget, the collection of poetry exploring the observations made during war. Taken from the perspective of “The Observer,” a child’s toy given witness to the shocking realities war brings, the author and poet give readers a glimpse not only into the shocking moments war has to offer, but the glimmers of hope and survival which make up the human condition.

In terms of creativity, the author excelled in this direction wholeheartedly. The use of the child’s toy as “The Observer” not only allowed the imagery to have much more of an impact on the collection of poems, but made each poem feel like a connected story, as if experiencing the memories of war the author was touching upon throughout his work as it occurred. The stark innocence a child’s toy conjures in the reader’s mind also plays well throughout this book, allowing the reader to truly feel the impact the senseless violence and bloodshed has on both soldiers and civilians caught in the crossfire.

The book will truly resonate with those who have been impacted by war and its reality. The book will also speak to ordinary people, who have had to step up in times of crisis and stress, and have had to face the horrors of war unintentionally. The strength and resiliency these ordinary people showcased in these most troubling times were beautifully reflected in the author’s contemplative musings in both the poetry and the artwork on display.

Filled with heart, compassion, and realism, author Gennie de Lange We Will Never Forget is a stunning poetry collection you won’t be able to put down.”

About Gennie de Lange: Gennie de Lange, being dyslexic, has drawn on the artistic gift she was given. She grew up during World War II in her grandparents’ vast house and forested garden. Being taken to the ballet to see Peter and the Wolf when she was tiny reinforced her beliefs—which many children share—that toys and animals understand everything.

Tales of war from her father were real. He had led a New Zealand dive-bomber squadron, from which only half returned. The camaraderie, daredevil escapades, laughter, determination, and sacrifice that everybody was prepared to make and endure were part of life. Her father always felt he was here on borrowed time.

For Gennie, life is a gamble. Being a ceramic artist, every time she puts her work in the kiln is a risk. The glazes that she paints with are all varying shades of powdery grey. After hours in the kiln at very high temperatures, her painted on tiles emerge transformed like stained glass. Her exhibitions sell out. The viewers relate to the subjects personally, being from the dramas of their own lives.

Now in her 80s, she has turned to using her own ceramic paintings as the background. The Observer, who is a worn velvet antique toy, views the devastation of war.

  • MY FATHER, THE CAPTAIN by Jean Ferdinand Tannis

The author’s father, Captain Alfred George Tannis was simply known as “The Captain” throughout the Caribbean and South and Central America. The way Alfred and his brother lived remains a source of inspiration for the entire Tannis family. In this book, the author shares their wonderful story. She shares how the brothers contributed to the success of the Eastern Caribbean during the Second World War and beyond.

The author’s father studied shipbuilding at Union Island in the Grenadines. When he returned to Bequia (pronounced beck-way), the second-largest island in the Grenadines, he knew his destiny was to build ships. He married a fellow visionary, Elvira Rosalie, the author’s mother, who encouraged him to build a sloop. That sloop became one of two that transported passengers between the islands of Bequia and Kingstown, Saint Vincent. Later, the two brothers built a larger ship together.

At a young age, the brothers proved to be men of vision, bravery and destiny. Even though they went their separate ways, they were always there to help each other as they left a mark on the world. This the story of two brothers who came from poor and humble backgrounds who, with vision and determination, became wealthy men – but never forgot their roots.
