Governor Gavin Newsom’s diaper plan called “Golden State Start” provides 400 free diapers to every newborn in participating California hospitals. The program costs $20 million for 40 million diapers. Critics say the state is effectively paying about 50 cents per diaper, while bulk retail prices are closer to 12–16 cents per diaper, making the program 3–4× more expensive than buying directly at stores.

Debates aren’t mind‑changers for most voters — but for the undecided, they still matter. New data from California and LA shows roughly one in four engaged viewers shifting support after this week’s debates. In crowded primaries with high undecided numbers, that’s enough to reshape the race — even if it doesn’t decide it outright.

Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez is making waves again after saying that “you can’t earn a billion dollars.” She argues extreme wealth comes from market power and labor exploitation — not merit — and that billionaires rely on a cultural “myth” to justify their fortunes. Critics call it an attack on capitalism.

Incumbent Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass faced two challengers in a televised debate on NBC4 and Telemundo 52: City Councilmember Nithya Raman and reality‑TV personality Spencer Pratt. The debate focused on homelessness, public safety, housing affordability, immigration and quality of life. Pratt adopted an aggressive outsider tone, sharply criticizing crime and homeless policies, drawing some of the night’s most divisive moments.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Reedley City Manager Nicole Zieba discusses the guilty verdict from a federal jury that found the Reedley Biolab operator, Jia Bei Zhu, guilty on all 12 counts, including wire fraud and selling adulterated and misbranded COVID‑19 tests, after a two‑week trial. Prosecutors said Zhu exploited the pandemic by falsely marketing more than one million faulty test kits as FDA‑approved, netting nearly $4 million.

California Democrats have advanced a controversial bill that critics label a “cover‑up,” arguing it could allow key details of the state’s troubled high‑speed rail project to be hidden from public view. The measure would give the project’s inspector general authority to withhold audit reports deemed risky to disclose, even as cost estimates have ballooned past $200 billion. Supporters say it protects sensitive information and improves oversight, while opponents warn it undermines transparency and accountability for taxpayers.

INTERVIEW: Fresno City Manager Georgeanne White addresses the city's downtown parking rules and why special event parking in some cases is costing $25 or even $50. Parking is generally free after 6 p.m., but special events are treated differently to manage demand and traffic near venues. During major events, higher rates can temporarily apply at meters and city garages, while standard rates return when events end.

The mother of 13‑year‑old Dominiq Puentes, who was killed Friday at Bullard and Palm, was on a moped she says she didn't want him to have because of safety concerns. Two juveniles were riding a moped-style scooter when they were hit by a white pickup truck. Puentes was driving the scooter and died at the hospital from his injuries. His 12‑year‑old passenger, a relative, was critically injured and remains hospitalized. Puentes mother doesn't believe Fresno streets are designed for mopeds, e‑bikes, or scooters, especially with children riding among traffic.
