Dear FoundHer...

Building a Company Based on Tradition, Community, and Connection with Tamara Keefe, Founder of Clementine's Creamery

Listen Later

“My life changed because of an ice cream cone,” recalls Tamara Keefe. Growing up in a large family of humble means, she was never able to join her friends for ice cream after church due to financial reasons. One day, her mother found an old hand-cranked ice cream maker and began making ice cream at home. Soon, every Sunday, friends, family and neighbors were coming over to Tamara’s house, each bringing different ingredients to make ice cream.  Tamara and her family became quite popular around town.

Fast forward to years later.  After years of great success in the corporate world, Tamara realized she was miserable and needed a change. After complaining that there wasn't a proper creamery in town, her friends encouraged her to return to start an ice cream business. After attending Penn State’s “ice cream college,” she opened Clementine’s, an award-winning microcreamery with six locations throughout Missouri, three more in the process of opening, and shipments made all over the country.  The shop’s practices stand out against the majority of industrial ice cream making practices in the country, and it’s known for its quality and unique flavors, including infusing them with booze.

Ice cream was what gave Tamara her first sense of community as a child. And now with her shops, she fosters the same sense of community among her neighbors and her team. Join us to learn the importance of connection, community, your team and your network---and how they can all work together to build an amazing brand.

Quotes:

• “Ice cream is the most emotional food item there is out there, because people are so tied to these memories. When you think of your first ice cream cone, it’s with your grandparents, it’s with your friends, it was maybe the first date you ever took a girl out on.” (8:58-9:13 | Tamara)

• “We’re in neighborhoods. People walk out, kids come in after school, there are restaurants around, universities, colleges. We’re so entrenched in peoples’ lives.”  (25:56-26:08 | Tamara)

• “The thing that we long for the most is to be connected to each other. Ice cream does that. When you’re holding an ice cream cone, you’re not holding a cell phone. So I think it has this magic special place for people because it’s really about connection and joy and community with each other.” (27:39-28:02 | Tamara)
