The Penn State Nittany Lions football team dropped its fourth-straight game in conference play to fall to 3-4 on Saturday night. The team, fresh off the emotional blow of head coach James Franklin's firing, couldn't get it done on the road and lost to the Iowa Hawkeyes. We'll discuss the game, how the team responded to the week, and what another loss means to the program. 

Join the show live immediately following the game to discuss the loss. We'll be talking with fans for roughly an hour about what led to the defeat and what the team's outlook is now that it's struggling for bowl eligibility. 

The Penn State football team fights to close finish 

Interim head coach Terry Smith fired up his team this week and found the right combination on offense and defense to play a close game with the Hakweyes. Defensively, Zakee Wheatley got an interception on Iowa's first drive of the game, which Penn State turned into a touchdown. After a field goal by Iowa, the team traded punts for much of the first half. Then, after an Ethan Grunkemeyer interception set up an Iowa touchdown, it seemed that all was going the wrong way for the Nittany Lions. 

Penn State punted with roughly a minute left in the first half, and Iowa set up for a 66-yard field goal. Defensive tackle Xavier Gilliam blocked the attempt, and Elliot Washington returned the block for a touchdown before half. The team then scored coming out of halftime to take a 21-10 lead. 

However, the Nittany Lions tried to go for a fourth and one from their own 40-yard line, which tight end Luke Reynolds did not convert. Penn State and Iowa traded drives in the fourth quarter but Iowa QB Mark Granowski broke a long 67-yard run to set up the go-ahead touchdown for the Hawkeyes.

The Penn State football program is reeling after the firing of head coach James Franklin on Sunday. No portion of the organization has been hit harder than the recruiting department, with commits either outright decommitting or opening up their recruitment in droves. Today on the BWI Live Recruiting Show, Penn State recruiting reporter Ryan Snyder assesses the damage that's been done in the last week. We'll also look at the road ahead for landmarks in the coaching search that make sense for the program and how they affect this year's cycle. Finally, we'll preview the game between Penn State and Iowa this Saturday to discuss how we see the immediate future playing out.

Penn State recruiting fallout 

Today, we'll dig into the announcements from Penn State prospects, which have come in several degrees. Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft made the stunning move on Sunday, Oct 12 to fire long-time head coach James Franklin from his position. On Monday, Kraft spoke to the media about the decision, outlining his reasons, what comes next, and how Penn State can recover from its current state. After that, interim head coach Terry Smith spoke to reporters for about 25 minutes about the team's state. Today on the BWI Live show, we'll discuss the critical moments from yesterday's events. The Penn State Nittany Lions did it again, and not in a good way. Penn State lost to Northwestern, dropping to 3-3 on the season and winless in conference play. What's more, they may have lost their starting quarterback. The team fell in another frustrating performance, thanks to a listless defense and special teams that allowed Northwestern a late lead. Then, quarterback Drew Allar left the game with a lower-leg injury.

Penn State's ugly season gets uglier 

The Penn State defense once again struggled to get off the field, giving up multiple ten-plus play drives to Northwestern, aided by penalties and special teams blunders. The defense allowed Northwestern quarterback Preston Stone to get into a rhythm, completing 65% of his attempts. The team's sloppy performance on defense included two face-mask penalties and another offside on third down. 

Penn State's offense fails to convert in the second half 

Penn State's offense was much less anemic early in the game, with Kaytron Allen gaining 59 yards in the first half. However, a Drew Allar interception on the team's first drive, after a blocked punt, ended the team's first scoring opportunity. 

Late in the game, a muffed punt by Devonte Ross set up Northwestern with a field goal attempt to take the lead. Penn State returned fire with a 67-yard catch and run from Ross, which set the team up for a one-yard Drew Allar score. 

However, the defense broke down on the return drive from Northwestern, allowing a touchdown and a 22-21 lead for the Wildcats. On the ensuing possession, Allar hurt his ankle on a third-down stop, and backup quarterback Ethan Gurnkemery found the same success on fourth down. Penn State's defense failed to stop Northwestern, and the  Wildcats held the clock.

The wheels have truly come off for the Penn State football team. Head coach James Franklin's comments after the game are here on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube channel. Penn State practice update 

The Penn State football team opened the doors of the Lasch Football facility on Wednesday evening to the media for our roughly 15-minute viewing period of practice.
