  • From Family Separation and Homelessness to Running for Congress with Joaquín Vázquez
Listeners, we're back this week with Joaquín Vázquez!

Joaquín Vázquez is a first-generation Mexican American, born and raised by working-class undocumented immigrant parents in San Diego.

Joaquín has a vast history in the community as an organizer, serving individually and in various progressive advocacy organizations. He’s fought to bring justice for working class and marginalized families in poverty at all levels of government; from fighting against displacement locally to achieving equitable public education funding in Sacramento. Under President Obama's administration, Joaquín worked on federal economic, environmental, and labor policy. On the international stage, he fought for refugee justice and for the most vulnerable countries to get a seat at the table at the United Nations in Switzerland. Now, Joaquín is fighting for the people of California's 53rd Congressional District to have a voice in Washington, DC and fight the Trump agenda.

TW: We talk about family separation and homelessness. Your mental health is important.
During our conversation, Joaquín shares his childhood and how he witnessed his father's deportation to now running for Congress.

You will also hear me give you an update of what happened this week and the lessons I learned in the last few days.

The NY Times article I quoted on the show is here.

  • Every Chapter Has A Lesson With Erica Courdae
Listeners, we're back this week with Erica Courdae.

Erica has dedicated her life to expanding how others interact with the world through powerful conversations. As an entrepreneur + licensed coach her work is frequently focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), imperfect allyship, and imposter syndrome. This work has taken her across the country onto stages and into communities as a key speaker and educator. Her support and leadership facilitates engaged conversations within 6 figure communities, international podcasts, and live events to connect people and create change.

During our conversation, Erica and I talk about the experiences she lived before she opened up her hair salon and how those experiences allowed her to expand her knowledge so she could be ready for her own challenges when she had to face them.

  • Love the melanin in your skin and the curls in your hair with St. Clair Detrick-Jules
Listeners, we're back this week with a conversation with St. Clair Detrick-Jules.

Born and raised in Washington, DC, St Clair is the daughter of a first-generation Afro-Caribbean immigrant father and an American mother. Growing up in “Chocolate City”—as DC was affectionately called, pre-gentrification—St Clair was surrounded by Black excellence. And by “Black excellence” this doesn’t exclusively refer to the Black people who “make it out of the hood”; but also referring to the Black neighbors who fed others when times were rough, to the next-door neighbor Sheila who cornrowed hair for all the little girls on Meridian Place, to the single Black mothers on the block who successfully, lovingly raised their kids—and then their grandkids—on their own.

St. Clair was educated (outside of the classroom) by other students of color who protested a campus presentation, and it was then that she realized the importance of fighting for justice and opposing inequalities. From them, St. Clair learned the importance of speaking up against injustice.
St. Clair toured (and still occasionally do, upon request) with DACAmented on college and high school campuses across the country.

When St. Clair studied abroad in Ecuador in 2016, she worked closely with one of her professors to create a curriculum for her semester entitled “Black Bodies in the Latin American Diaspora,” which gave her the chance to travel around Ecuador to meet with Black communities, which in turn expanded her ideas of Blackness (and, of course, hair was a part of her studies). Further, St Clair was also able to take courses across a broad range of disciplines—in the Ethnic Studies, Africana Studies, Philosophy, Anthropology, Modern Culture and Media, and Visual Arts departments, all of which have given her the traditional academic background necessary to create this project—and especially to edit, organize, and arrange the far-ranging narratives which comprise Dear Khloe.
We talk about all the things including growing up in a Black and Brown neighborhood, growing up with two cultures, and natural hair for Black women.
